My kids (13, 9, 6) were all delighted when we read this book. The animals featured are crazy in very cool ways and the poems for each one are fun to read. The illustrations are so beautiful I would consider buying a copy to cut up and frame the images. I'm (obviously) really happy with this book.

Teaching littles the theory of Evolution.

I received this book at a discounted price for my honest opinion about the book. I was not payed or influenced to submit my opnion. These are my thoughts and my thoughts alone.

Evolutionary Tales is a secular children’s book, introducing very lightly the evolutionary process through 10 poems. Written by Matt Cubberly and illustrated by May Villani and published by The WilderWay. The book is beautifully illustrated and perfectly displays how each creature has evolved to overcome obstacles. This book might make a fun and interesting additional to your collection if you are a homeschooler or your school-aged children. Please note, this is a book of poems and as such does not teach the theory of evolution. Rather, it explores how different animals have adapted to life.

These poems focus on amazing and wildly evolved animals, fish, and insects from all over the world. The book is compiled into 10 different and easy to read poems describing what the creature used to evolve. The author does a great job touching different areas on the blog to introduce some of the most outlandish creatures you’ll ever read about. I believe this book could spark curiosity in learning more about the theory of evolution and get your children talking about it. My son’s favorite was the anglerfish because he remembered it from “Finding Nemo”. However when we delved more into what the film showed us he was amazed that little bacteria could turn fluorescent at will.

Overall this is a great book to spark the conversation about the theory of evolution and has some really wonderful illustrations. One book that should be in your collection.

A fun exploration of varies species.

I enjoyed this book as an exploration of a variety of plants and animals and how they fit into their particular environmental niches. Each of the 10 species presented is accompanied by a poem describing something interesting about their physiology and is accompanied by a compelling and informative picture. Several topics are briefly mentioned in the book, such as co-evolution and fitness display.

I should note that the reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is because the book was not what I expected given the description. According to the description, "Evolutionary Tales is a children's book that teaches evolution ", whereas according to the book it showcases "what exactly this process can lead to". The books description is closer to what the book does. I had expected the book to deal with the process of evolution as opposed to the varied results of evolution given the Amazon description.

That being said, the book itself is compelling. I like that it goes through different examples of how extant species have evolved to take advantage of the environment they live in. Much like another reviewer, I found myself learning new things from some of the examples. The different examples represent different environmental pressures, and some social pressures. As a book to spark curiosity in learning about different species and as a place to start talking about the evolutionary mechanisms which brought those species to evolve as they did, I think it's a great resource. Well done! I highly recommend this book.

So addicted to this series. I keep re reading! SERIOUSLY AMAZING! SUCH WOW!

I seriously can't get enough of these books! I'm always excited for the next one to come out! This one takes place where the first one left off, so if I were you, I would go and read the first book because it is amazing! There's a lot more action, drama and suspense in the second! I love learning new things about these characters as well as the past! There's so much more in book two that covers a lot of detail, but will only make sense if you read the first! I can't get over the epic battles as well as the amazing thickening of the plot! It will get you hooked! You will literally want more and more! Kimberly Jessy is truly a gifted an amazing writer who I know will succeed in all her endeavors!

About the Author
Christine Gray has been a middle school English teacher in Revere, Massachusetts, for ten years. She is passionate about providing students access to relevant, high-interest novels. Currently pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies as a Reading Specialist, she has also presented at the 2013 National Council of Teachers of English conference. Christine is a Great Schools Partnership trained Professional Learning Group facilitator and organizes PLG meetings for her department colleagues. She has been trained in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), attended the 2014 UDL Summer Institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and regularly presents professional development workshops for colleagues.

Carrie Meyers has taught math to students from kindergarten through college for more than 18 years. Through most of her career, Carrie has excited and educated middle-level adolescents by integrating science and other real-life applications into her math classes. She has also worked with NASA on writing curriculum and as an education specialist for the New York State Education Department on high school Regents exams. She has also presented at state conferences to provide quality professional development to other educators on how to integrate the Common Core Standards into other content areas. Carrie's current focus is to help teachers see the power that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education can have in their classroom by creating and providing Professional Development Institutes for teachers nationally, increasing teacher content knowledge as well as pedagogical methodology.

Barron's series is good, this one also

I looked at many of the books in this area and the Barron's books seem to be the best. This one is as good or better than any of them. It is quite a stimulating experience to go through the book and try the questions. Like many people who have commented on the testing that is done, I am not against testing, I am against over testing and the misuse of tests. I am not qualified by experience or knowledge to hold forth on this subject but others are.

Any attempt at making major improvements in education is I believe a somewhat futile effort. The education system, like the criminal justice system and the health care system reflect the society as a whole with its characteristic problems, inequality, injustice, and incoherence. These systems of symptoms and will not be improved until the general society is improved or changed fundamentally. I am not talking about socialist revolution but a fundamental increase in fairness and equal opportunity and decrease in discrimination and all of the barriers to fairness and equal opportunity. We won't have any real progress in any sphere until we can eliminate the essential corruption at the heart of our society and economy. There are many good people working in the education field and good work being done and this should be continued simultaneous to general efforts to improve our whole society.

This past year I was looking for a book that help prepare me for what was going to be on the Common Core test. This book did just that! I wish I would have bought it earlier in the year and used it all year long. It has practice sheets and a practice test. The examples are relevant and has helpful tips and vocabulary throughout.

Beautiful book!

This book makes very excited to collect more by Jane Cabrera. My almost two year old has been in love with this book for 8 months now and only becomes more interested in it. The pictures are beautiful and allow for varied conversation as I reread and reread this book to my child. It's one of my favorites as well as my daughter's.

Good Rhymes; Easy to Sing

This is one of the better Jane Cabrera books. A dog and cat row down a river. There is a verse on each page and in the verse they will see an animal and then make an animal sound at the end of the verse. It's very easy to sing and the pages are nicely illustated with bright colors. My daughter really enjoys the book.

Just great in every way

The two year olds in my family love it. The lyrics are inventive and the rhyming suits them just right. They repeat the last word on every page. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful! I bought 3 copies. One for every two year old in my family.

The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault

Charles Perrault was a famous French literary writer, and at one point in his long and illustrious career, he wrote (possibly with his son) a series of fairy tales. They were eventually translated into English and were/are wildly popular.

Basically it's a book of a few well-known and high-quality fairy tales that have appeal and appropriateness for all ages. The language is a bit old fashioned, as is some of the spelling ('inchant' rather than 'enchant,' for example) but it's definitely worth reading.

Although, the word 'faggot' is used in the text to refer to sticks, which is historically what it meant, but if you're sensitive, that might be something to consider.

There's an active table of contents, no illustrations (but the captions are left in the text to tease), the page numbers are left in the text, and the first letter of every story is mysteriously dropped. Oh, and the very last line of the last story was in an illustration, so that's missing.

The Fairy
Blue Beard
The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods
The Master Cat; or, Puss in Boots

Beautiful Little Book

I have a large collection of children's books, including a number of collectible volumes of classic stories illustrated by the greatest artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To find a little collection like this that includes illustrations by Gustave Doré is truly a treasure. It's also fascinating to see familiar stories close to their original form, without the prudish edits they've collected over the years. Whether you're a fan of the artist and the writer or want a great storybook for your children, enjoy!

Immortal stories with superb Harry Clarke illustrations

If you ever wondered where Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty came from, they came from this remarkable 17th century Frenchman. The stories themselves are fascinating, as they all have morals appended that are, of course, very tied to the cultural mores of the time. And no, they aren't exactly like the Disney versions! Harry Clarke is considered Ireland's greatest illustrator, and the reproductions of his color and black & white work in this book will show you why. The intricacy of the illustrations is just astonishing, and I am happy to say that this book shows them very well - sharp, deep, and with good color fidelity. It's true that some of the females are bare chested and Sleeping Beauty is covered only by a veil, but I find this no more suggestive than, say, Venus di Milo. It's great art, and very much in keeping with the time the tales were written - check out the sky high hair on the noblewomen! All told, a fascinating soiree into the origins of some of our most familiar fairy tales.

Fantastic Read

I loved The Heartless Fey. Ms Richards has a stirring voice, setting up a wonderful world filled with vast imagination and endless possibilities. Faye is the main character, a half breed caught between two worlds, humans and the Fey. The Heartless Fey is just the beginning of her story and I already cannot wait to read the next in the series. This author’s characters are well-developed and endearing and her writing has just the right blend of humour, warmth and intelligence to make reading this story the utmost pleasure. Anyone who can make you love a rock as much as Ms Richards can is a winner in my book. Although this novel is targeted towards young adults, I would have no hesitation in recommending it to any adults looking to dive into a marvellously entertaining, imaginative world. Five stars all the way.

Don't be fooled - this book is all Heart!

It's been a while since I came across a voice I liked as much this one, or a character I felt such a strong connection to as Faye. This girl displays every bit of courage, tenacity and smarts I expect from a protagonist and Ms Richards very cleverly surrounds her with the kind of entourage guaranteed to show off her many redeeming features.
So if I liked her all that much, why not five stars? Not Faye's fault. She shares the mike with a number of other players, so much so that we don't even meet her properly until a few chapters in. While the other characters are equally well developed and entertaining, they just aren't Faye. I would have given 4.5 if I could.

One teeny-tiny snag for me was that some of Faye's scenes veered more toward middle grade than teen (some of the repetition was a tad overdone), whereas in some of the other characters' scenes, the darkness became quite adult. On balance, this probably makes young adult a good compromise; there is nothing in there I wouldn't be happy about a 12-year-old reading.

Bated though my breath isn't (simply because I can't hold it for the year it takes most people to publish a book), my fingers are drumming an impatient tattoo for the sequel - hurry up and get on it, Ms Richards.

You'll lose sleep

I'm usuallly quite responsible, but THE HEARTLESS FEY had me staying up way to late, reading. I needed to see what happened next. I didn't want to leave the company of the sassy 13 year old half-breed with the prophesied birthmark. Or her humble but powerful protecter, or her talking rock ("I prefer to be called a stone."). I can't wait for the sequel!

If you like fairy tales with kings, queens, magic, monsters, etc. you will enjoy this Kindle freebie. Tales of Folk and Fairies is a collection of short stories all written by Katharine Pyle. It was published by Little, Brown, and Company in 1929.

The table of contents mentions illustrations, but sadly they do not come through in the download. Amazon, I encourage you to fix this.

I read the first few and feel they would make nice bedtime stories for children. Remember though, children's stories used to contain beatings and such. These do as well. It's a nice contrast to the way authors write today, but parents may want to pre-read before snuggling up and reading out loud.

Enjoyed the stories greatly. But why do I keep getting books that give a list of illustrations and then forgetting the illustration itself? I did not really miss the pictures but the last thing it mentioned was that the page numbers for the illustrations had been changed to match those in the ebook. Don't you think it might have been better to put in the pictures instead?

Different is one word to describe this book. It's stories you never hear about but might if you were born in Europe maybe. It has that old world kind of flavor. Strange is another word that comes up to mind also. If you like the old world style of story telling then this book might be for your reading enjoyment.

It was in this landscape that a young Hero, Ædwe, arose and challenged the Evil rooted in the North. In the various volumes in the series, we follow his childhood, youth and adulthood, as he progresses from obscurity to the climactic ending of the tale. Judge for yourself whether he succeeded or failed...

In Volume One, "Pandæmonium" the first of fourteen, Ædwe grows up in Pandæmonium, the abode of The Enemy, Dunfiendsceatha - the "Dark-fiend-enemy". As a boy, he explores the warrens, as they are called, and discovers a secret of The Enemy; The Chamber of Strategies. Meanwhile, he does what he can to disrupt the logistical system of Dunfiendsceatha. He gradually comes to realise the importance of what he has seen in the Chamber of Strategies, and eventually decides to escape from the warrens, to the outside world; he then travels south to the Kingdom of Albion, leaving behind his boyhood friend, Cenewine, but they will meet again.

In Volume Two, "The Village", Ædwe walks South to The Village, in the Kingdom of Albion, where he stays for a few seasons, learning the ways of the people. He befriends various villagers, and meets the mysterious Æthelthryth, but remains apart from them all, before moving on; but unbeknownst to him, his stay will have major repercussions for the future.

Volume Two is some 11,600 words long.
Edition two has some minor changes, but no change to the plot.

In Volume Three, "The King of Men", Ædwe walks South to the City of the King of Men, as a recruit to the army. After some training, he is involved in skirmishes, and advances his career. He meets a maiden in the forest, and instinctively feels an attraction to her, and later finds that she is well connected; an advantage, but also a pitfall. Eventually, he is forced to leave Albion, for the neighbouring Ælvish kingdom, where the Mountain King holds sway.

Volume Three is some 11,500 words long.

Volume Four is "The Halls of the Mountain King".

Volume Five is "The Valley of the Shadow of Death".

Volume Six is "Return to Pandæmonium".

I bought this book for my six-year-old son for two very good reasons:

1. We have the misfortune of living at the top of the street where a one-year road construction project has been going on for over three years; and

2. Bob Staake's illustrations.

For over half of my little boy's life, we been driving past road construction vehicles, sometimes standard yellow, sometimes shockingly pink -- most of them just parked along the side of the road -- just to get from our stretch of road to another. He has learned the names of all of them, especially the bulldozer. Dennis Shealy did include some uses of the bulldozer that didn't include construction, so that made the book especially interesting.

A few months after the construction began, my son discovered books illustrated or written and illustrated by Bob Staake. Staake quickly became my son's favorite illustrator. After almost three years, my son is a connoisseur of Staake's work and would know it anywhere. And he always says it's "beautiful". And my son is right.

Fact Filled Delight for Little Boys

Like all Golden Books the text is simple and clear, with friendly illustrations. The illustrations in I'm a Bulldozer are definitely geared towards little boys and the book, is full of facts about what bulldozers do, presented in a clear and interesting format. My three year old loves this book. While the tone of the bulldozer in the very beginning of the book isn't one I care for it also isn't a tone that there is truly anything wrong with, and is very relatable to little boys, and it is only that first page. Just a heads up to other moms who might be a bit put off by that as well. All in all wonderful addition to a little boys library.
