"Holy fried onion rings! Fun from beginning to end." ―Wendy Mass, New York Times bestselling author of 11 Birthdays and The Candymakers on The Dirt Diary

The Gossip File:
• Chandra lets little kids pee in the pool.
• Melody stole $ from the café register.
• Ava isn't who she says she is...

Ava is cool. Ava is confident. Ava is really Rachel Lee who is lying her butt off.

Rachel is visiting her dad at a resort in sunny Florida and is ready for two weeks of relaxing poolside, trips to Disney World – and NOT scrubbing toilets. Until her dad's new girlfriend, Ellie, begs Rachel to help out at her short-staffed café. That's when Rachel kinda sorta adopts a new identity to impress the cool, older girls who work there. Ava is everything Rachel wishes she could be. But when the girls ask "Ava" to help add juicy resort gossip to their file, Rachel's not sure what to do...especially when one of the entries is a secret about Ellie.

Chapter 1

"Rachel, how many rocks did you put in this suitcase?" Mom asks as she drags my luggage out of the back of her dented minivan. Evan, my too-cute-for-words boyfriend, rushes over to help ease the ancient bag to the curb in front of the airport terminal. The suitcase used to belong to Mom, back when she still traveled to places other than Connecticut to visit her sister.

"Here you go, Booger Crap," Evan says as he brings the bag over.

I'm so used to his goofy nickname for me that I don't even roll my eyes this time. Instead, I give him a shy smile and say, "Thanks."

When Evan grins back at me, his green eyes don't twinkle like they usually do. We're both pretending that me being away for two weeks won't be a big deal, but it stinks that I'm leaving when things are finally good between us. Plus, I think he's been gearing up to kiss me all week. But I guess that will have to wait until I get back from visiting my dad in Florida. I seriously doubt my first kiss is going to happen at the airport in front of my mom.

Oh my goldfish. What if that's what Evan's planning? My mom will never let me live that down! My hands are shaking as I grab the suitcase and hurry through the parking garage.

I don't slow down until I get to the airline check-in counter. I've been trying not to freak out about the idea of traveling by myself, but seeing all those strangers with suitcases makes my nerves go into overdrive. With my luck, I'll accidentally wind up in Omaha instead of Orlando.

Mom must notice that my eyes are about to pop out of my head because she puts her hand on my shoulder and asks, "Are you sure about this?"

I push the ball of fear as far down into my stomach as I can. I've been dreaming of going to Disney World with my dad since I was six years old. I can't pass that up just because I'm scared of flying alone. "Yup. Chances are I won't die in a fiery plane crash, right?"

Mom shakes her head. "Is that supposed to be comforting? By the way, I checked the weather report in Florida this morning. It's going to be near a hundred degrees." She wipes her forehead as if the very thought is making her sweat.

"It was ninety here the other day," I point out. "Besides, I'm sure Dad has air-conditioning."

Okay, Florida in the summer might not be ideal, but with school starting in a few weeks, it'll be nice to finally get a vacation. I've spent all summer working for my mom's cleaning business, taking pastry classes, and organizing baking competitions (not to mention pulling pranks on people and making a general mess out of everything). It'll be a relief to hang out by the pool, relax, and spend some much-needed quality time with my dad.

Evan hangs back while my mom and I go check in at the airline counter. We stand in line for a few minutes until the ticket agent waves us forward without even looking up at us.

"What's your destination today?" he drones.

"Omaha," I blurt out, handing over the flight confirmation my mom gave me.

The man finally glances up at me. "What was that?"

"I mean Orlando," I say. "Orlando! Where SeaWorld is with all the whales!"

He raises an eyebrow and then looks at my mom. "And who's this?"

"I'm her mother," Mom jumps in. "I'll be escorting her to the gate, so I believe I'll need a pass to get through security."

The man takes her driver's license and studies it for a long time. Then he looks at Mom again, and I can tell they're coming, the words that always make my stomach clench into a ball.

"She doesn't look like you," he says.

"She's my daughter," Mom says, putting a protective arm around me. "But she looks like her father. He's Korean."

The man nods, but I can tell he's still not sure about us. Does he think my mom stole me or something? Or that because I don't have blond hair like she does, that means we're trying to sneak her into the airport?

Just when I think my stomach might clench itself into a black hole, the man sighs and grabs my suitcase. Then he hands me an enormous badge that I have to wear around my neck. It practically screams UNACCOMPANIED MINOR FLYING ALONE.

Finally, we get to the security checkpoint. That means it's time to say good-bye to Evan.

As I shuffle over to him, it hits me that I haven't thought through this dropping-off-at-the-airport plan. When Evan volunteered to come along, I was excited that he wanted to see me off like a real boyfriend would. I didn't consider the fact that he's going to have to ride all the way back to his house alone with my mom. What on earth will they talk about?

"So," he says. "I guess you have to go now, huh?"

I nod. "They're going to start boarding soon."

"Well." He looks down at his sneakers. "Text me when you land so I know you got there, okay?"

"I will."

When he glances up at me, I suck in a breath. He has a total "I'm going to kiss you" look on his face. This is really going to happen!

But wait. My mom is right there. Even though she's not looking in my direction-probably to give us some privacy-it still feels like her eyes are lasering into me.

Evan takes a step forward, and I start to panic. What do I do?

"If you need something to talk to my mom about on the way home," I find myself saying, "ask her about music from when she was a kid. She won't stop babbling for hours."

Evan's forehead crinkles. "Okay. Thanks for the tip."

Gah! Why does this have to be so awkward? Why can't I be brave like my best friend Marisol? She'd kiss the guy and be done with it, no matter who was watching.

"Anyway," he adds. "Have fun. I'll-I'll miss you."

My face goes hot. "I'll miss you too," I whisper.

And then I feel it. Evan's face inching toward mine. The scent of peppermint on his breath and the heat off his skin getting closer and closer. My mind goes blank for a second. I can't believe it. My first kiss is really going to happen...in front of my mom!

Just as Evan's lips are about to brush mine, I jerk my head sideways. All Evan's mouth finds is my ear.

Holy poached watermelon. Evan Riley tried to kiss me. And I turned away!

He coughs and steps back. "Um, so have fun," he says, his face flushing bright pink.

"I–I'm sorry. It's not...with my mom here..."

Why did my stupid head have to flinch? So what if Mom's right there? She's not even watching! This could have been the perfect moment, and I ruined it!

Maybe I can fix it. If I lean in and kiss him, then everything will be okay. Do it, I tell myself.

"Rachel!" Mom calls over her shoulder. "It's time to go."

The moment shatters like a dropped candy cane. Evan and I look at each other for a long second.

"I wish I didn't have to go," I say softly. "I wish..." If only I could be the kind of person who doesn't care what people think, the kind who does what she wants. But I think that Rachel only exists in an alternate universe where everybody eats cupcakes for breakfast and nobody ever has to go to gym class.

"It's okay," Evan says, reaching out his finger to give my nose an affectionate tap. "Two weeks isn't that long."

I know he's right, but it still feels like I took our perfect airport good-bye and turned it on its ear. Literally.

I'm still shaking as my mom and I go through the security checkpoint. When we get to the gate, it's time to say yet another good-bye.

My mom pulls me into a hug and starts sobbing into my hair.

"Mom," I say meekly. I try to think of something comforting to say, but I always freeze up when people get really emotional. "Um, at least there aren't any sharks in Orlando, so you don't have to worry about me being a shark-attack victim, right?"

She lets out a little laugh and pulls away. "It's not even on the water," she says, wiping her eyes.

"Exactly. No sharks. So I'll be fine. Will you be okay?"

Mom nods as she keeps sniffling. "I'll have plenty to keep me busy with apartment hunting and all the new Ladybug Cleaners clients." She leans in and kisses the top of my head. "Don't worry about me. Just have fun with your dad."

I feel bad that Mom is going to be working her buttons off and looking for apartments for us while I'm on vacation, but I couldn't say no when my dad asked me to visit. Besides, it might be months before we actually sell our house, so I doubt Mom will find a new place without me.

"I love you," she adds. "You know, I was about your age when I went on my first trip away from home. I found out so much about myself that summer. The experience showed me what kind of person I could be."

Oh boy. Now Mom's really getting cheesy. "Okay. I should go." I give her one last hug. If we draw this out any longer, I'm going to start crying too.

When Mom finally lets me go, I can't help peering back the way we came, even though Evan must be halfway across the airport by now.

I should feel like I'm at the start of an adventure. I should be excited to finally be leaving home and seeing my dad. But I can't help wishing I could have one more minute in my regular life before I go.

Fun fast read!
By Michelle Neisser
My 9 year old daughter inhaled this book. She says it was funny because the main character, Rachel, was trying to help people but her attempts were making everything worse. In the end Rachel figures that out. It's a story that probably wouldn't happen in real life because some of it is wacky but still fun. We can't tell if there might be more books in this series, it doesn't end on a cliffhanger but it's possible to have a follow on.

Anna Stanisweski is a brilliant author I read her first 2 books and they were AWSOME, but the Gossip File is a big disappointment from the last two books. Don't get me wrong the book isn't terrible if you don't mind getting rid of most of the humor that made me love the first two books, but I think The Gossip File could have been a whole lot better. I just hope she writes a new book that will make up for the disappointment in this one. Still Anna Staniszewski is AWSOME and a great author I'm definitely going to read more of her books.

AMAZING
By Rachel
I loved it. It has drama everywhere. My name is Rachel so I can relate. I'm not a fan of drama because in my school, it's all that happens really but I enjoyed reading about it. Literally everything in this book is like my life which is kinda weird but I like it. It has things that I want in my life which obviously can't happen but it's nice to fantasize. I Love this series and I recommend it to anyone who likes to pick up a book and read about drama, relationships, and anything funny really. I can't wait for the fourth book

Not very "reusable"
By Roger B.
My mother purchased these for my daughter and they are nice stickers, but the term "reusable" should be omitted. These seem like normal stickers and are not as reusable as the description states. Other than that they are nice NORMAL stickers and they would receive 5 stars if labeled as normal.

Agree with one of the other reviewers... Nice stickers but they are just regular stickers, not reusable. Also they are a bit hard to peel off.

What a great variety!
By K. Wells
These books have a ridiculously massive amount of stickers with a great variety. They are also color coordinated, so you can have a blue (green, pink, yellow, etc) page full of stickers. Would recommend this for kids who love to do arts and crafts.

The Song of King Gesar: A Novel (Myths), by Alai

The first English translation of Tibet's founding myth, written by an acclaimed winner of the Mao Dun Prize, China's top literary award, and impeccably translated The Song of King Gesar is one of the world's great epics, as significant for Tibetans as the Odyssey and Iliad for the ancient Greeks, and as the Ramayana and Mahabarata in India. Passed down in song from one generation to the next, it is sung by Tibetan bards even today. Set partly in ancient Tibet, where evil spirits mingle with the lives of humans, and partly in the modern day, the tale tells of two lives inextricably entwined. Gesar, the youngest and bravest of the gods, has been sent down to the human world to defeat the demons that plague the lives of ordinary people. Jigmed is a young shepherd, who is visited by dreams of Gesar, of gods, and of ancient battles while he sleeps. So begins an epic journey for both the shepherd and the king. The willful child of the gods will become Gesar, the warrior-king of Ling, and will unite the nation of Tibet under his reign. Jigmed will learn to see his troubled country with new eyes, and, as the storyteller chosen by the gods, must face his own destiny.

Amazing YA read
By Kristen @ Pretty Little Pages
Hello, Greek Gods, amazing heroine, and a whole bunch of intrigue! Bright Fire was such a fun and quick read. It was definitely an amazing addition to my Greek reads list. It started off a bit unsteady, but the author finds her footing fairly quickly. You can't help but get lost in her world once that happens!

Dell goes through a lot of development and changes in this book. It was very interesting to watch how she really bloomed in this book. I'm always a fan of strong characters and authors that know how to handle them. Bright Fire did not let me down in that respect!

There are so many great elements to this story. The secondary characters are so fitting and a wonderful addition to the story. MJ Austin really knows how to paint a picture with her words, and I got so lost in her descriptions. The only real downside was the beginning for me like I said. There are a few other places that could be tweaked to flow better, but overall Bright Fire is solid. I enjoyed it so much, and I think YA fans will as well!

Bright Fire was an enjoyable read
By Michelle@Book Briefs
Bright Fire is the first book in a young adult fantasy/mythology series. Delfia is the daughter of Persephone and Hades, only she never knew that little tidbit about herself. I love mythology stories and I have a special affinity for Persephone and Hades. Bright Fire was a little different than most Hades fiction that I have read. Here he is more of the traditional bad guy, and certainly not the love interest like he was in the few other young adult books he was featured in. Bright Fire took a unique perspective on the fantasy tales and I enjoyed it. Plus, I can't get over how much I love this cover. I just want to stare at it all day. Sigh.

The book felt kind of stilted at first. Delfia's parents are killed almost instantly and no one really had a reaction. People were shocked and sad, but Delfia's mom's best friend just acted like nothing even happened at all. The book said she was sad, but in the very next sentence she told Delfia and her own daughter (Delfia's best friend) "ok girls, be good, don't get into too much trouble, i'm off to work." This was just hours after both of Delphina's parents were brutally murdered in their own home. It just felt really strange to me. But moving past that, once Delfia meets up with Alec and starts to get some more answers on what she is and what is going on, the action really starts to fly. It was easy to get lost in the story then.

This is a fun read, but as many other reviewers have warned (on goodreads) this book could have benefited from an additional grammar and general flow editing read through. But it should be noted that this is M.J. Austin's first book, so I am sure the next book in the series will not make some of the same mistakes Bright Fire made. Overall though, Bright Fire was an enjoyable read. There is a cliffhanger at the end that is a pretty brutal one. It will leave you wanting the next book.

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not compensated for my review.

A YA Fantasy Treat!

In this YA novel, real-world events and mythology intertwine to make Delfia's sixteenth birthday anything but sweet. During what should have been a lovely birthday dinner, she overhears the murder of her adoptive parents taking place in the next room. Suddenly, her entire worldview has shifted.

She befriends Alec, who proves to be more than just a schoolmate. He explains Delfia's real birth story, and her destiny. Together (With some help from her best friend, Lyla) they work to fight back against Hades, Lord of the Underworld. Will they be successful? Can she avenge her parents' deaths?

Reactions:
The first thing I noticed about this novel was the abundance of grammatical and punctuation errors. There are times in which this can be overlooked, and the reading is not interrupted too much. This, however, was not one of those times. The errors were jarring and, at times, made the syntax incredibly awkward.

That being said, the idea behind the story was fantastic - literally and metaphorically. The heroine, Delfia, handles situations really well, considering the circumstances. Her reactions seem realistic, and she was a fun character. I really felt for her when her parents were killed, even though that was at the beginning of the book. We hadn't spent much time together in the story, but I was already emotionally engaged enough to shed a couple tears for her.

Alec, her companion, showed a lot of character development that I enjoyed seeing. He summoned up a strength that he didn't initially seem to be aware he had. Lyla, the best friend, was a lot of fun to read, though she seemed a bit one-sided in terms of personality. She just didn't have a lot to her. Still, she helped further the plot and made a good counterpoint to Delfia's personality. Delfia ended up become a badass heroine with a seemingly endless amount of inner strength.

The Verdict:
M.J. Austin has mixed together aspects of Greek mythology, YA fantasy, and a touch of romance to create a world one can easily get lost in. I give it 3.5 / 5 stars, because the grammar and punctuation errors were incredibly distracting. However, those can be fixed. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys YA Fantasy. It was a fun read.

Beauty and Her Beastly Love (Passion-Filled Fairy Tales Book 2), by Rosetta Bloom

Getting to happily ever after has never been so sexy or so much fun. Sparks fly in this retelling of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. In this version, you'll find enchanted manors, magical roses, pent-up desire and much, much more.

In this grown up version of Beauty and the Beast, we meet Beauty, a sheltered young girl living in the French countryside with her father. She doesn't get out much, but her tutor has given her books that she is supposed to read privately. The books all have a rose imprinted on the cover and describe the ways in which men and women love each other. The books give Beauty ideas about pleasures of the flesh.

Just like in the traditional tale, Beauty's father, Pierre, sets off on a journey and ends up taking refuge in an enchanted dwelling. Pierre takes a rose-covered book, like the ones his daughter reads, and is caught by the beast who lives in the manor. Pierre agrees to send his daughter in exchange for the Beast not killing him.

When Beauty arrives, she feels disappointed that she will spend a lifetime imprisoned with this beast, rather than experiencing the type of relationship between a man and a woman described in her books. Only, as she gets to know Beast, she develops an attraction to him. Later, Beauty discovers that she and Beast can take pleasure in each other's company in more ways than she'd ever imagined.

About the Author
Rosetta Bloom loves a good love story. She also likes a steamy tale with two characters who find solace in each other's arms. So, she writes romance and erotic romances, and all of them end happily, because Rosetta hates sad endings. If you want a story that has a few surprises, and lots of heart, then she's writing the story for you.

Rosetta Bloom's first novella, The Princess, the Pea and the Night of Passion was published in December 2014. Her second novella in the Passion-Filled Fairy Tales series, Beauty and Her Beastly Love, was published in January 2015. In May 2015, she began publishing a series of short tales as part of her Romance: Trysts series. The trysts are fairly erotic in nature, and lots of fun. They're called Romance: Trysts because despite their shortness, there's a touch of romance in each that should you make smile (after you catch your breath from the steamy love scenes).

More books in each series will be published throughout 2015. To learn more about Rosetta Bloom or either series, visit her website, rosettabloom.com.

Beauty and Her Beastly Love by Rosetta Bloom
By ?wazithinkin
I don't know who Rosetta Bloom is, but she can sure weave an interesting tale. I think I enjoyed this one even more than The Princess and the Pea, and I really loved it. This retelling stays pretty close to the original version of Beauty and the Beast, however it is the added story that makes it so great. I am not talking about the added sex scenes here, of course they were hot and highly enjoyable, which added a whole other level to this tale.

What made this story so enjoyable was the Beast's back story as well as the sorceress who placed the curse on the Beast. Giselle, Beauty's late mother's friend, who brought Beauty the steamy books with only volume numbers for titles and a rose embossed into the leather book cover. Then there was Monsieur Dumas, who promised to take care of Pierre's debts, for Beauty's hand in marriage. These are what shot this story through the roof for me. The twists in the plot kept me enthralled until I finished the whole story early the following morning.

This isn't just another sexy read, it is a story with depth I am sure any adult would enjoy. I know I am enjoying the way Rosetta Bloom retells fairy tales.

FYI: Beauty and Her Beastly Love is book 2 of Passion-Filled Fairy Tales. It contains graphic sexual encounters, which may not be suitable for all readers.

Format/Typo Issues: No significant errors in editing or formatting.

Pick up Beauty and her Beastly Love today, you won't be disappointed.
By Lynxie
Beauty and her Beastly Love takes the reader on an erotic retelling of the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast. Much of the original story line is there, but it has been spruced up for the adult readers and contains some rather interesting intimate scenes.

Slight variations from the original include things like the erotic, leather bound books that make their way to Beauty and the lack of the amusing Cogsworth, Lumiere, and Mrs Potts. Gaston's character was well and truly present, although he had a different name and Beast and Beauty play their parts very well too.

At times I did wonder at Beauty's ability to have sex with Beast, even though he was part man, perhaps this too was intentional, the beastly nature to the sexual scenes adding a touch of the taboo if you think about it. Just something to keep you thinking about it :)

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing where Rosetta took the adult version of Beauty and the Beast. I feel that most readers will enjoy this story, be they lovers of the original or not, there's something for everyone in there.

I noticed no typos or formatting issues (always a plus!) and really the only slightly negative I'd have to say is that the cover is a bit bland considering the story. I'd have liked something a bit sexier, but if this is the most negative thing I have to say about the book, well Rosetta should be stoked :D

Pick up Beauty and her Beastly Love today, you won't be disappointed.

ABBOT JOVIC'S ICONS: A VerityFable, by Dan Coffman

Does the human suffering which has plagued Kosovo for thousands of years stem from either satanic evil or divine punishment? Some evidence suggests ancient aliens are to blame for the perpetual misery of people living in this part of the world. Is that possible? During medieval times, the Serbian, Byzantine and Ottoman empires were dramatically impacted by an event which took place near the Decani monastery in Kosovo. To their detriment, the rulers of these nations misunderstood that incident’s significance. This short story chronicles the heretofore unknown ordeal of Abbot Jovic when a satanic curse, Christian anathema and alien visitation combined to alter history. The 6000 word fable is approximately 25 pages long.

This is an interesting and easily read story that might be called historical myth. I enjoyed reading it and found myself wishing that it was longer. The characters are interesting. Dan Coffman has a great imagination and portrays a little known place and time in history with creative images.

Thought Provoking and Fun
By Affy Person
This is a well written and intriguing story. It mixes myth, folklore, and historical facts together (complete with bibliography for the curious to do their own research if they wish) and acts as a good example of the Secret History genre of speculative fiction. The story offers up some explanations for a few of history's curious mysteries, along with a warning from the author about the dangers of seeking the truth. It's a fast read, but it's also surprisingly packed with detail that helps to immerse you into the setting, and the story of werewolves, satanic curses, and the possibility of alien visits amid the careful balancing act of faith and belief. Definitely pick up a copy.

Rip Van Winkle (Illustrated), by Washington Irving

Rip Van Winkle is a short story by American author Washington Irving published in 1819; throughout the story Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving relies heavily on the use of description in regards to both nature and characters. These aspects are highlighted by Arthur Rackham, one of the premier illustrators of the early 20th Century. Included are explanatory Notes by E. M. BIGG, M.A., Head Master, High School, Parkhill. Rip Van Winkle wanders off one day with his dog Wolf into the Kaatskill mountains where he runs into an odd group of men drinking and playing ninepins. He drinks some of their mysterious brew and passes out. When he wakes up under a tree he is astonished to find that 20 years have passed and things are a lot different.

From Publishers Weekly
All the elements of Washington Irving's 1820 tale come into play in this retelling, but it's Moses's (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) Hudson River backdrop that lends elegance to the volume. From the opening scene of great schooners winding their way downriver through the Catskill Mountains, the illustrations situate readers in an enchanted land. Moses lays the groundwork for lazy, good-natured Rip's transformation by portraying the protagonist propped up against a tree, whether in his own yard or just outside the town tavern where he gathers with his friends. Scorned by his wife one too many times, Rip heads for a hilltop with a vista of birches, pines and peak autumn colors. Moses successfully evokes the feeling of time stopped with his portrait of the mysterious band of revelers who lead Rip astray: the Dutchmen garbed in nearly clownish costume, a lone wisp of smoke escaping above the russet mountaintops, the ground in pale, neutral colors. The paintings aptly capture the momentous changes that occur during Rip's 20-year sleep (1769-1789): trees are larger, the tavern sign that once depicted King George III now displays General Washington, and new homes dot an otherwise familiar landscape. Small vignettes serve as close-ups to reveal the personalities of the various characters, though an illustration depicting Rip "surrounded by a troop of children, hanging on his coattails, clambering up his back" would have played up Rip's more positive attributes. Moses's tangible representation of Irving's setting and characters serves as a faithful introduction to the tale. Ages 4-up. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-A trip into the past to see mystifying events that occurred over 200 years ago in New York's Catskill Mountains. Occasional rumbling rolls of thunder cause one to wonder if just maybe-it all happened. Readers will be caught up in the remarkably fresh retelling of Irving's classic tale. Moses's text, while respecting the tone of the original, has a remarkable storytelling quality, highlighted by a crispness of phrase, appropriateness of the description, and clever modernizing of the language. However, what makes this edition so exciting is the joyous collection of folk-style paintings, each reflecting the artist's love of color, simplicity of character interpretation, attention to detail, and interest in history. A new generation of readers will chuckle over and rejoice in Rip's adventures in this lively visual feast.

From Booklist
A companion volume to Moses' edition of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1995), this book retells, in somewhat simplified language, Irving's classic tale of Rip Van Winkle, who fell asleep in the Catskills one evening and awoke 20 years later. Oil paintings appear on nearly every page of this large-format book, which includes a double-page spread portraying the hero's awakening. Like his great-grandmother Grandma Moses, the artist paints in a folk art style that may appeal to adults more than to children. Recommended for collections needing illustrated versions of the tale. Mystical Truth For The Humble, But No One Else
By The Wingchair Critic
Washington Irving's 'Rip Van Winkle' originally appeared in 'The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.' (1819) alongside another evocative piece of Americana, 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,' a wondrous story equally set in Irving's beloved Hudson River Valley.

Though not as multilayered as its longer and slightly more well known fellow, 'Rip Van Winkle' also has long roots in Old World folklore, which is appropriate, since 'The Sketch Book' was the first book by an American writer to be taken seriously by the European audiences that then set the standard in the West.

Like the earlier 'A Knickerbocker's History of New York' (1809), 'Rip Van Winkle' is playfully attributed to Dutch antiquarian "Diedrich Knickerbocker," the most famous and certainly the most charming of several personae Irving adopted as an author.

Written in simple but gorgeously visionary language, 'Rip Van Winkle' is the story of the lazy but warm spirited farmer, who, in an effort to escape the "petticoat despotism" of his "termagant" wife, flees for an afternoon's hunting in the lonely, autumnal Catskill Mountains.

Accompanied only by Wolf, his faithful but equally harassed dog, Rip is surprised when he notices an odd figure approaching through the wilderness and calling out his name.

The "short, square built old fellow with thick bushy hair and a grizzled beard" is carrying a "stout keg," and gestures to Van Winkle to assist him with his burden.

Taking up the "flagon," Rip hesitantly follows the little man into an isolated ravine, and thus steps unknowingly into fairyland; there he finds himself confronted by a solemn and outlandishly dressed party of dwarfs playing at ninepins.

Bewildered, Rip pours out the beverage for the assemblage, but can't resist taking a drink himself.

Awaking on the mountainside, Van Winkle, finding Wolf gone and a badly rusted gun at his side, returns to town, where he discovers his home in ruins, his wife dead, his children grown to adulthood, the land of his birth now an independent nation freed from the yoke of the British, and himself a stranger to the villagers, who stare at his tattered clothing and exceptionally long facial hair.

After making bewildered inquiries, he comes to accept that twenty years have passed.

As a humble, good hearted, and mild tempered dreamer, Rip is an archetypal fairytale hero, though the only dragon slain is Dame Van Winkle, and she accidentally, by the passage of time itself.

Like kindred spirit Ichabod Crane, Rip is not an absolute novice when it comes to the fantastic, for he has enjoyed telling the village children who love him "long stories about ghosts, witches, and Indians."

As in traditional Celtic fairy lore, in which eating or drinking while visiting fairyland is often punished with permanent residency there, Rip had made the honest mistake of partaking of fairy foodstuffs, and thus pays an unintended price for doing so.

For Celtic fairy lore also featured multiple variations on the theme of fairy time; one minute of perceived human time might be seven years of fairy time, and a man spending a happy week dancing in fairyland might discover that one hundred years or more has past on earth upon his return.

Whether dwarfs, elves, boggarts, or fairies, Irving's little people are first cousins to many of the mythological beings of European mythology.

Interestingly, like the literally "solitary" fairies of Ireland and Scotland, who were brusque of manner at best and never seen in groups (as were the far more gregarious "trooping" fairies), the little men Rip holds audience with "maintain the gravest faces, the most mysterious silence," and thus represent "the most melancholy party of pleasure he had ever witnessed."

But Irving, who deftly places his story in the historical setting of pre-Revolutionary America, also shrewdly offers his audience other interpretations for Van Winkle's strange mountain encounter.

Though narrator Diedrich Knickerbocker acknowledges early that the Catskills are "fairy mountains," one character, sage Peter Vanderdonk, explains that it was the dead "Hendrick Hudson" himself, who returns with his crew every twenty years "to keep a guardian eye on the river," whom Rip encountered, while the postscript indeterminably discusses a variety of Indian spirits, including the Manitou, who haunt the region.

One fact entirely overlooked by scholars everywhere is that American literature was born in the daimonic, a tradition begun by Irving but enthusiastically continued by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe.

Like most of Irving's work, at present 'Rip Van Winkle' is a grossly underappreciated piece of pure Americana; certainly American literature could have gotten off to a much worst beginning than it did than with its gallant, optimistic, and uncynical founder. For Rip, despite the precariousness of his experience, learns to accept his fate and settles into a comfortable old age as a venerated member of his community.

Not that very long ago, there was a time in America when, taking a direct cue from the story itself, some of America's young schoolchildren were fancifully taught that thunder was not the result of lightning, but merely the echo of the elves' occasional game of mountain bowling.

This definitive edition, first published in 1905, features over fifty genuinely "mesmerizing" though somber watercolor illustrations by British master Arthur Rackham, which perfectly suit Irving's text and will captivate both adults and children alike.

This is the original text of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. There are 34 of Rackham's paintings used throughout the text. I do not find the reading level suitable for 4 to 8 year olds. Reading level is about 8th grade (14 years old). Example: "The great error in Rip's composition was an insuperable aversion to all kinds of profitable labour. It could not be from the want of assiduity or perseverance..." This is not for 4 to 8 year olds. Illustrations enhance this classic in American literature.

Rip Van Winkle Hardback
By A Customer
This book is beautifully illustrated but not for the average upper elementary age child. The are lots of long and unusual words that will prove frustrating to the average 4th & 5th grader. It may work well for a read-aloud, but the momentum of the story will be lost by the time you stop and explain the meaning of so many words. Considering the vocabulary, a high school student could easily enjoy and learn about creative writing from this book.

This book teaches children about lying, nit listening, and other things in their lives that are not nice or can get them in trouble.
I'm hoping on getting more books from this author that helps kids be better and nicer to others rather it's siblings or adults.
