This was a strange book. Almost all the games consisted of naming things (like types of fish or things in your room) with the game ending when you run out of things to name. The few other games were common games like tic-tac-toe or name that tune with no particular "bed time" spin on them. I liked the overall idea of spending time with your children, talking and having fun, before bed and I came away with a few unique ideas to implement. There were a few distracting grammatical errors. It was OK.

The book itself is a five-star classic, but I recommend looking for another copy. The formatting is bare bones and this occasionally impacts the book itself (the mouse's "tale" is formatted so it runs altogether instead of being a shape poem). This version also omits the illustrations and they are a significant part of the charm of the original. If you're looking for a free version this will do . . . but it is so much more enjoyable in other versions.

Initially I thought I had read this as a child but hadn't. I have seen the animated version based on the work many times. The story is told through a child's dream, Alice falls asleep and her mind sees her traveling down and down in a rabbit hole and seeing a fantasy world. This is such an exceptional imaginative story and the characters are quite distinct and fun. Considered a classic work of children's English Literature I have to concur. Even now as an adult it brought back so many memories of when I was a child and I could not help being entertained.

I have been a huge fan of Alice in wonderland for about the past fourteen years. I have been finally able to sit down and read the book and it is one of the best books that I have ever read. I really liked the ending because out of all of the six movie versions of Alice in wonderland that I have seen I have never heard of the ending that it is written in the book. If u really liked this book I would say watch the hallmark version of Alice in wonderland which was made in 1999. It is as close to the originally book of Alice in wonderland that I have seen to date.

An Amazing Rescue is the fifth title in the Princess Ponies series. Pippa and Stardust are still trying to find the remaining missing golden horseshoes in order to save Chevalia, the magical island of talking ponies, that is a refuge for all ponies in trouble before Midsummer Day, so the island doesn’t lose it’s magic. When they venture into the Wild Forest, they realize that Divine is the pony who has stolen the golden horseshoes. With the help of Peggy, the flying horse who gives Cloud wings, Pippa is determined, with the help of Cloud, Cinders and Stardust, to return the missing horseshoes to the Whispering Wall before sundown on Midsummer Day. Each of the books in the Princess Ponies series may be read as a stand-alone because much of the background story is repeated. The series capitalizes on the appeal of horses to girls, and the characters resemble the ponies in the popular animated television series, My Little Pony in that they are anthropomorphic. The plot of this book continues with adventure and intrigue written in the format of an easy chapter book. The book ends with an interview with Peggy that restates some of the story elements. Also there is an introduction to the last book in the series. A collectible magic horseshoe comes with each book that will most likely not survive in a library setting. Princess Ponies : an Amazing Rescue is recommended as an optional purchase for grades two through four.

"Charm" cover not the best

We've been working our way through this series...its getting rather repetitious (common with a lot of these type chapter books though). My 7 y/o wants to finish the series (aka Find out how it ends), but if we had skipped a few books in the middle, it would have been fine(!) [read Book 4 tho--unicorns!]. She takes breaks between each book, as she's a little bored along the way [too]. Disappointed that this "new" book from Amazon arrived with a Crease on the front cover. Doesn't effect the reading, but for full retail price, I prefer "non-creased" books, like the rest in our series! The charms are a cute addition, but NOTE that the plastic holders stick out and don't work well on well-stocked bookshelf: other books get caught up on them, they take up more space, and if you remove them, they leave a big open cut out in your cover which will eventually rip. I would much rather have had plain covers (like our first 3 in this series). My daughter has not even removed the charms; she wants the story, not the cheap toy. We have not read 'this' story yet, but we're ready for the series to end; its been a lonng journey.

Each book in the series gets better

My daughter just finished this and now has a new favorite Princess Ponies book. They seem to be getting better as they go.

The Princess Pony series really feels more like the individual books are more like chapters or sections in a whole. You really need to start in book 1. So if you have read 1-4 and are considering getting 5, just know that my 7-year-old loved this one, where the ponies sprout wings and continue their quest to return the magic horseshoes to Chevalia's wall to save the magical island.

As an adult I find the stories pretty boring and predictable, but for a 7-year-old princess- and pony-loving girl what could be better than a book about Princess Ponies that comes with jewelry. While I haven't enjoyed reading the books, I have enjoyed the time reading with my daughter.

The story continues, and grows further. We watch a figure of legend become a god, and all the consequences of such fame. The murder trial scene is a work of genius. Unlike most fantasy stories that are trapped in an unchanging setting of vague time, there is the inevitable, natural change that would effect any place, making it unique.

Last Wild - A Promising Beginning

Disclaimer: I am a 33 year old married man. I am also an ecclesiastical leader, so I try to read material that I think would be appropriate for the young men and women in our youth group.

I was given a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Last Wild is a fanciful tale set in a dystopian world where almost all animal life has been wiped out by a mysterious virus.
The world is populated by a colorful cast of characters, both human and animal.

The main character spends almost all of the book mute, and this introduces both complications and clever workarounds.

The animal cast and the world they explore together bring a great deal of color and humorous touches to the narrative. (I especially enjoyed the white pigeon and the wolf cub.)

It’s imaginative, thrilling, fun and the pace of the story increases with every chapter.

The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the story does reach a satisfying conclusion to several plot threads.

I can’t wait for the next one!

The language was decent throughout.

Violence: Guns are pointed, threateningly at characters - both animal and human. There are some animals that fight each other, some are shot at, including fatally. Some show symptoms of the virus, and some even die of it. One is lost and presumed dead. It is all handled with tact and given the due gravity it deserves.

I would say it is comparable to a PG and would not have any trouble handing it to anyone over the age of 8.

Where Wild Things Roam

"The Last Wild" is a YA novel that tells the story of a future where mankind has destroyed the planet, destroyed the wilderness, and released the Red sickness upon all who remain.

Hopping on the "humans are bad and killing the earth" bandwagon, we have a novel of a dystopian future in which people don't eat real food, cities are abandoned, and animals are all but missing. A post industrial wasteland of filth and broken dreams.

Enter our hero: Kester. Mute. Alone. Institutionalized. But the boy has a gift. He can call to the animals and they, in turn, can talk to him. Of this desperate gift a plan is hatched: Kester must escape and find the cure for the animals, as they are the last Wild remaining.

The novel is full of fun and fantastic imagery that brought a smile to my face: the General (a cockroach) and the Stag. Proud wolves, addle-brained Pigeons, and a host of other charming characters make up our ragtag band of adventurers. Along the way, Kester will meet friends and foes alike, he will experience doubt, loss, pain, and know true sacrifice.

The book reads well, is quick and holds my attention well. I compare it to "The Graveyard Book" by Gaiman as it is something that appears much more simple on the outside than it really is. I am sure that middle readers will enjoy it, and it presents a gentler, more lyrical option to the current crop of derring-do YA novels of a blasted future. Well done, and it left we wistfully wanting to read more of the adventures of Kester and the last Wild.

Excellent idea, not particularly well executed

Summary:
Told in 6 parts, this tale looks at Kester Jaynes, a troubled boy that is locked up in a home. In his world, animals do not exist. When a cockroach starts talking to him and he is able to communicate back, he thinks he has truly lost his mind. Regardless, he listens to the small group of animals that surround him. With his small group, Kester is set off on a journey to save the animals. Along the way he makes some new friends and learns a lot.

My thoughts:
Honestly I was hoping for so much more in this book than what I received. Torday has a very simple writing style which fits very well for a middle grade book. There is nothing that will pull the reader out of the story, and very little British slang. It was a perfectly good story. It just didn't really pull me in like others have. The idea and premise are brilliant. I love that are damaged hero is being fixed with the love and care of animals, especially since I'm a huge fan of animal therapy. He's a sweet child that definitely becomes something more than he started out as. There just wasn't that extra bit of magic that made me really want to share this book. I guess it just wasn't imaginative enough for me. Some of the descriptions I felt were flat and the pacing was even enough that I didn't feel excitement at any particular area. There is a bit of a cliffhanger, but things are wrapped up quite easily. The conflict while enormous in theory is not shown with the same enormity within the book. It just wasn't outstanding. It's just good.

Board books are supposed to be short and sweet

As a Children's Librarian in a major library system, we strive to make our story times pertinent to the age group that attend. We split our story times such that kids of the same age groups are exposed to what is developmentally appropriate for that age group. This book is perfect for the under 15-month crowd. It is not text heavy, it has soft, sleepy-time colors, the book is physically not too heavy and easy for little hands to handle, and Mr. Fish is super adorable. The simple rhyme scheme is just right, with a rock-a-bye cadence. This is a wonderful introduction to the more complicated Pout-Pout Fish books...I just read The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School to a group of 1st graders, and they were enchanted by it. AND, they knew Mr. Fish from previous books. I totally agree with folks who've said that this is a great part of the going to bed routine for little babies. That whole "20 minutes a day" of reading mantra is great for older kids, who are reading on their own. That 20 minutes, however, can be broken up during the day for your babies, a minute here, a minute there. Board books are, by and large, abbreviated versions of the original stories, and are meant to be short, sweet, and disposable (read: eaten!). I am about to read this to my baby story time in a few minutes, but I wanted to get this out before I forgot. Sweet Dreams, everyone!

We love the Pout Pout Fish books, but this one along with "Smile Pout Pout Fish" were short and lame. Very little effort was put into this book, seems like anyone could write a book like this one. It was a huge disappointment after her other great books.

Breezy is a good word for the newest book in the Words Are CATegorical series. Like its predecessors, it presents a quick grammar lesson through a fast-paced, rhyming text and witty, cartoon-style illustrations. The introductory page defines (in prose) the terms comparatives and superlatives. An appended page tells (in prose) how to form comparative and superlative adjectives. And in between come the rhyming verses, briefly explaining these parts of speech and providing the many examples that make the book relatively fun for students. Cleary’s verse sets the tone, which seems intended to offer entertainment as well as instruction. A political cartoonist for The Globe and Mail, Gable creates energetic, comical scenes based on a few words; a cast of madcap, dressed-animal characters; and some unusual color combinations. Hilarious and colorful illustrations and the vibrant rhyming text guide readers to learn how to use comparatives and superlatives. Who knew learning grammar rules could be this fun?

An easy chart at the end of the book shows how to add -er or -est or -ier or -iest. Some two syllable adjectives use more and most like "more pleasant" and "most pleasant." Some adjectives are just weird like bad and many. Bad =worse=worst and many=more=most.

Readers will laugh at the text and bold illustrations, "Superlatives are the breeziest and chattiest and cheesiest, funniest and sunniest and quietest and queasiest." Kid friendly animals demonstrate each rule, and kids will not only learn the rules but be entertained. The cover is appealing and welcoming and should easily sell the book to young readers.
The team of the two Brians (Cleary and Gable) is a match made in publishing heaven.

Highly, highly recommended for all libraries and classrooms grade 2-up. This book is a great teaching tool for any English class regardless of grade (trust me, I taught high school English for 10 years).

This is an excellent way for reluctant learners to learn about comparatives and superlatives ...

Many young students enjoy learning about language with Brian Cleary's colorful CATagorical cats. They have a lot of fun watching this wild and sometimes zany group of cats as they talk about language concepts. The little CATegorical teacher in the front points to her easel that claims comparatives are "forms of describing words that compare two things" while superlatives are "forms of describing words that compare three or more things." Kids will get a good laugh when they see that little dog's eyes widen when he spots that "hairier and scarier" dog with fangs for teeth. It just could be the biggest, meanest dog they've ever seen in the CATegorical books.

There are always exceptions to the rule and the cats explain, "But sometimes, you don't add e-r. / Instead, you reach for `more,' / as in more tired, / more beautiful, / and more impressive store." Superlatives often end in e-s-t, but there are exceptions there as well. "But e-s-t is not the end / for some superlatives. / Most modern and most fun / are two example I can give." Examples of comparative and superlative words are highlighted in bright, bold colors in the text, making it easier to find them in each sentence. In the back of the book is a sidebar that has several examples of "How to Form Comparatives and Superlatives." This section offers a more "traditional" approach to learning about language concepts.

I thoroughly enjoy the books I've read in the "Words Are CATegorical" series of books. The great rhyming scheme and the colorful cats will entice even the most reluctant reader and fascinate those who are as smart-er than the average cat. This is an easy way for children to learn about comparatives and superlatives and their use. The vibrant and sometimes comical cats make the concepts easier to comprehend by presenting visuals. This is a book targeted to the youngster between the ages of seven and eleven. It is simple and and easy way to learn about these special adjectives. Quite some time ago I showed one of the books in this series to a friend who had a nine-year-old. He tried them out and has been hooked on them ever since and waits for each new book in the CATegorical series.

Wacky superlative fun

This book is a fun way to teach grammar concepts to kids. The wacky illustrations and quirky rhymes will surely bring a smile and educate at the same time. My kids read the book aloud and tried making up more comparatives and superlatives as they read the book - it showed me that they caught on to the concept very well as soon as they read the book. A helpful chart provided at the end of the book describes how to form more of these words.
This is a good addition to your personal library as well as to class/school libraries. Definitely one of the better fun grammar concepts books I have read, maybe even among the best. Edutainment indeed!
