Beginning reader book
By Im Dallas
I bought this for my four year old grandson. He isn't reading yet. As he loves both books and the Paw Patrol, I am hoping this book about the Paw Patrol will help with his learning to read. It isn't a book you would pick if you are reading to your child as this book has simple sentences as it is for a beginning reader. It has really lovely pictures and still tells a simple story with only easily sounded out words in a few sentences on each page for the beginning reader.

From a Paw Patrol fan household...this is on the bottom end of stories + value
By Anthony R. Calfo
Giving grace for the fact that it's a beginner level and we love alll things Paw Patrol (PRO points...I guess? Actually, that's weak...I can't come up with a positive here). CON: REALLY short and just not a good story; there is no pit crew in this namesake book!

About the Author
Sir James Knowles (1831 – 13 February 1908) was an English architect and editor. He was born in London, the son of architect James Thomas Knowles and himself trained in architecture at University College and in Italy. He designed, amongst other buildings, three churches in Clapham, Lord Tennyson's house at Aldworth, the Thatched House Club, the Leicester Square garden (as restored at the expense of Baron Albert Grant), and Albert Mansions, Victoria Street, Westminster.[1] However, his preferences led him simultaneously into a literary career. In 1860 he published The Story of King Arthur. In 1866 he was introduced to Alfred Lord Tennyson and later agreed to design his new house, Aldworth, on condition there was no fee; this led to a close friendship, Knowles assisting Tennyson in business matters and, among other things, helping to design scenery for The Cup when Henry Irving produced that play in 1880. Knowles became intimate with a number of the most interesting men of the day, and in 1869, with Tennyson's cooperation, he founded the Metaphysical Society, the object of which was to attempt some intellectual rapprochement between religion and science by getting the leading representatives of faith and unfaith to meet and exchange views. Members included Tennyson, Gladstone, W.K.Clifford, W. G. Ward, John Morley, Cardinal Manning, Archbishop Thomson, T. H. Huxley, Arthur Balfour, Leslie Stephen, and Sir William Gull.[1] The society formed the nucleus of the distinguished list of contributors who supported Knowles in his capacity as an editor. In 1870 he succeeded Dean Alford as editor of the Contemporary Review, but left it in 1877 owing to the objection of the proprietors to the insertion of articles (by W.K.Clifford notably) attacking Theism and founded the Nineteenth Century (to the title of which, in 1901, were added the words And After). Both periodicals became very influential under him, and formed the type of the new sort of monthly review which came to occupy the place formerly held by the quarterlies. Inter alia it was prominent in checking the Channel Tunnel project, by publishing a protest signed by many distinguished men in 1882. In 1904 he received the honour of knighthood. He was a considerable collector of works of art. He was married twice, in 1860 to Jane Borradaile, in 1865 to Isabel Hewlett. He died at Brighton and was buried at the Brighton Extra Mural Cemetery.

An excellent and readable introduction to Arthurian legends!
By Godly Gadfly
Who hasn't heard of King Arthur and the knights of his Round Table? In this book you meet them all - including the magician Merlin, and the brave knights Sir Launcelot, Sir Gareth, Sir Tristam, Sir Bors, Sir Kay, and Sir Galahad. All the old favorites are included - Arthur drawing the sword out of the stone, Arthur receiving the sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake, and Arthur's marriage to Guinevere. But this is just the beginning of excitement - followed by numerous quests and adventures of the knights, including the Quest for the Holy Grail. This book is chock-full of entertaining adventures involving knights in shining armour, damsels in distress, fierce jousting and sword fights to the death, battles against hoards of enemies and giants, tournaments and miracles.
The medieval setting is painted in a rather idealized fashion, limited to the nobility and figures of the court, who embrace all that is beautiful, brave and noble. These virtues are sometimes portrayed rather simplistically, as unknown knights engage in mortal combat, and only after they have virtually killed each other do the introductions begin: "What is your name?" Behind this medieval mayhem is a heightened sense of chivalry more reflective of legend than fact, where knights battle to the death for the sake of a woman - even one they have only just met. But isn't that what the Arthurian legends are all about? Nobody is under the illusion that they are to be taken too seriously. Journeying to Arthur's Camelot is a form of escapism - suspend your sense of disbelief, watch the flashing swords and fearful battles, and enjoy.
That's not to say that the Arthurian tales do not reflect any reality. Arthur's world is in many respects a real medieval world. Medieval beliefs in paganism and Christianity are evident throughout. Witchcraft and enchantment is presented as alive and deadly, and conversely the true religion - in this case the beliefs of the medieval Catholic church - is evident throughout as knights commend themselves to God in prayer, thank him for his help, and even repent from their sins. The whole notion of the Holy Grail is of course a very Christian tradition - although a tradition that represents more fiction than fact. And the moral virtues of justice, truth and right for which the honorable knights fight are still noble ideals of virtue today. Arthur's kingdom is presented as a kingdom blessed by the grace of God, a beacon of light symbolizing all that is good and true and right, and a worthy model for kingdoms in today's world because it revolves around timeless virtues. Tales that promote dignity, courtesy, courage, respect for right, respect for female dignity and purity are as ennobling as they are entertaining.
How much truth there is behind the Arthurian tales will always be the subject of debate. The fact remains that there is an extensive and confusing body of legend to wade through. In this work, Green has essentially followed Malory's fifteenth century classic "Morte d'Arthur." But unlike most other writers, such as Sir James Knowles, Green has made some significant improvements:
1. Firstly, the traditional Arthurian tales are a confusing mass of legends. But Green consciously weaves all the tales together as part of a single pattern. He needs to take some liberties with legend in order to achieve this, but these alterations are minor, and the end result is a plausible reconstruction with a clear development, revolving around the establishment of Arthur's kingdom, its climax with the successful quest for the Holy Grail, and subsequent downfall.
2. Secondly, most other collections slavishly follow the body of legend inherited by Thomas Malory. Green follows Malory in the main, but has researched the legends carefully for himself, and also incorporates some Arthurian legends not found in Malory.
These innovations of Green result in a very readable and successful version of the Arthurian tales, and yet one that does not significantly sacrifice faithfulness to legend. Those looking for a more historical reflection of the Arthurian tales would do well to turn to a version of Malory, such as that by Sir James Knowles. And those looking for a more developed and extensive modern version where the author has taken liberties beyond the original legends, would enjoy the classic work by Howard Pyle. But as a faithful, plausible and enjoyable introduction to the tales, you can't go wrong with this superb effort by Green.
Most readers looking to be introduced to the Arthurian legends need look no further than this collection by Green. It's not as grand as Malory, but it's a better read. There is no end to the accomplishments of sword and sorcery, adventures and quests. To our sorrow, Arthur's kingdom ends in darkness and disgrace, but not before it has shone with a wonderful and memorable light. Along with the tales of Robin Hood, the tales of King Arthur are the most exciting tales that British history has produced. This is the stuff of legend, and it's worth a read.

Not the version I would suggest
By T. Simons
It's curious to me that this is the best-selling version of the King Arthur story in the kindle store, because it's a singularly flawed collection, well-eclipsed by other variants that are also available for free online; I suspect its popularity is an artifact of the search engine, not the book's own merits.

The author, Sir James Knowles, was an architect and friend of Tennyson, best known for founding the Metaphysical Society; this is, therefore, a very Victorian Arthur. In this case, "victorian" means "bowdlerized to the point of inanity." The story of Merlin's enchantment of Uther and Igraine to arrange Arthur's conception is almost completely elided ("When Uther, therefore, was at length happily wedded" -- yep, that's the whole story); Sir Tristram is apparently completely chaste with Iseult (King Mark just doesn't like him for some indiscernible reason) and even when Lancelot and Guinevere are caught together and the entire course of the story turns on adultery, such that bowdlerization was completely impossible, Gawain suggests that "it may well be that Lancelot was in her chamber for no evil." The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is simply not included at all.

I suppose that kind of bowdlerization might be acceptable in a children's version of the Arthur stories, but this edition isn't good for that either, for two reasons: 1) like many free kindle ebooks, all illustrations have been removed, and 2) it's a kindle edition, and who gives a $250 ebook reader to a child too young to read a story with adultery in it?

There are other problems also. The King of Gaul (Sir Bors) is an ally for the first third and last third of the book, but in the middle, Gaul has a different king, Flollo, and Arthur conquers Gaul six ways from Sunday (mostly as a stopover in his conquest of Rome); timelines don't add up; so on, so forth. I didn't feel the author did a good job of telling the Arthur legends, in any particular. In short, this is a bad version of the King Arthur story and the general reader would be better off not wasting time on it.

I'm sure people are going to say "hey, it's an early victorian version, don't hold it to such high standards," but there's no reason for a modern reader to read these, any more than there's reason to read Sir Thomas Bowdler's "Family Shakespeare". For more "historical" versions of the Arthur legend, either of this versions' main source materials -- Geoffrey of Monmouth's _History of the Kings of Britain_ or Sir Thomas Malory's _Morte D'Arthur_ -- are superior reads (though I'll admit you'd want to skim Monmouth heavily). My own personal favorite, Howard Pyle's three-book version of the Arthur story ("The Story of King Arthur and His Knights," "The Story of the Champions of the Round Table," and "The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur") is similarly available for free online in the public domain, can be found with excellent illustrations by Pyle himself, is written in a fashion suitable for children and adults, and does a far better job of capturing the romance of the Arthur legends.

But whatever version you pick, this one is a poor place to start. It does have some strengths -- chiefly an encylopedic compilation of at least some version of almost every PG Arthur-related tale -- but the author's victorian mores seem to have twisted far too many of the stories into unrecognizability. Not recommended.

A dignified and beautiful introduction to the legends
By J. Angus Macdonald
I have loved the tales of Camelot since I was quite small. Due to this, several friends have asked me where they should begin. Over and over again, I recommend Green. His work is not majestic like Malory, but much easier to read and follow, especailly for a neophyte. Children love it, as do adults; this book gives the basic nobility of the tales, giving a good clue as to why they've been so popular for so long. Green also includes several tales of Sir Gawain, so he is not the near-felon he seems in several late medieval texts. The books is charming, moving, sad, happy, and everything else you could wish from Camelot. If you haven't read of Arthur before, begin here; if you want to remember why you loved these tales to begin with, read Green. He provides more than you would ever expect.

Attention Amazon - you have a bad batch from publisher
By kiki
Only giving it 4 stars but qualifying it. I love this book. Paw Patrol stuff still hard to come by and I prefer this book format to Golden books. It is a cute story, great illustrations, and has little extras like stickers and a memory game included. Lots of little surprises for little fans. The thing is I got a book that was defective. It had punches sealed together. Strange. Be aware in ordering from Amazon that you might get this defective 'batch' if they have more.

Courage
By topbook
Beautiful picture still from the movie, large letters for easy reading on the eyes and the story is the same one we grew up loving. Haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I see in the book, I would love to. It says: she stood up for what was right and believed there was power in courage. Who could say more.

Tells the story simply and with beautiful pictures
By Passau
I really enjoyed seeing this movie. This book tells the story simply, to the point and the pictures are very captivating. The book is great if your child loved the movie and wants to talk about the movie and the story. When I read this to my kids, they talk about each scene and what Cinderella does in her journey for true love and courage. Here are some photos of the pages. Highly recommend!

I'm happy to say my daughter loved this book
By Carrie Sue' Bradshaw
In answer to the reviewer above, maybe try buying an actual printed book to read to your children, rather than buying one of those pointless kindles.
I'm happy to say my daughter loved this book, and even happier she'll know the beauty of books, rather than having them diminished on a small screen. .

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—Arnold continues his distinctive and successful series with this newest title, a cohesive look at the world of insects (previous nonfiction titles have explored sharks, firefighters, and dinosaurs). Readers learn about where insects live, as well as their life cycle and physical characteristics. Kids will be fascinated by unusual details (a cockroach can live for days without a head). Scientific terms, such as metamorphosis, exoskeleton, and entomologists, are clearly defined. Appropriately, Arnold also tucks in information on flies, but the author is unclear about which insect is the fastest. He states that "the Southern giant darner dragonfly is the speediest insect. It can fly as fast as a car going 35 miles an hour!" However, a couple pages later, he writes, "A fly can zoom around at 45 miles per hour!" Arnold superimposes comical cartoon images of Fly Guy and his boy pal Buzz onto background artwork that alternates between lined journal pages and double-page outdoor nature photos; the resulting effect gives the pages a collagelike look. Kids will enjoy the amazing close ups, such as an image of an insect's stinger. VERDICT Teachers and series fans alike will be satisfied by this latest installment.—Lynn Vanca, Freelance Librarian, Akron, OH

Fly Guy is Living the Bug Life
By It's Me, Sven!
A boy had a pet fly named Fly Guy. Fly Guy could say the boys name--Buzz. Fly Guy, being an insect and all, could teach Buzz a thing or two about his fellow insects. And so he did, in FLY GUY PRESENTS: INSECTS. For kids who are reluctant to get into nonfiction, the FLY GUY PRESENTS series is perfect. Tedd "The Extra D is for Delightful" Arnold combines two familiar characters (Fly Guy and Buzz) into plenty of interesting facts for a wonderful little book. There are plenty of science lessons, lots of pictures, and some interesting facts that I was not aware of prior to reading, much less the kiddo I was reading to.

The layout is interesting, and in parts of the book the reader is seeing what Buzz is reading in his little notebook. Unfortunately, that style can get busy (or perhaps BIZZZZZEEEEE) for a little one to follow. A few of the stock photos used for the book are not the best quality, but overall the book is wonderful. I love anything that gets my kid into learning, and the FLY GUY PRESENTS series does that.

Now, Fly Guy being an entomologist might seem apt, but most humans aren't anthropologists. No, Fly Guy doesn't just know about insects because he is one. He knows about them through street smarts--Fly Guy has lived the BUG LIFE.

About the Author
School Zone Publishing Company began as The School Zone Learning Center in 1972. The Learning Center was a retail teachers supply outlet, specializing in sales to teachers, with two stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan. About 1974, schools instituted changes in educational methods that affected the home and schools. Changes included introducing new teaching methods in math and English and eliminating workbooks provided on a shared basis for home use. With these changes, parents experienced difficulty finding educational material for use at home. Local parents turned to the Learning Centers, requesting workbooks and other at-home teaching aids. In response, the Centers formulated six workbooks and printed 1,000 copies of each. The books sold out in six months. An expanded workbook series was developed and received equally enthusiastic acceptance. School Zone Publishing Company was incorporated in 1979. A new line of workbooks had been written and illustrated by late 1979. In January 1980, the line was printed and School Zone began operations. Market response was extremely favorable. The product line has expanded yearly and currently includes almost two hundred educational products.

numbers 1-10
By amythist
A fantastic 1st dot to dot book. This book only uses numbers 1-10.

My 3 1/2 year old can do these easily by himself. He likes it, but tends to prefer the dot to dots in the Kumon 1-70 number games book. Unlike Kumon, you can kind of tell what the picture is even before connecting the dots (reason I docked a star). He likes the greater mystery of the Kumon dot to dot.

My children just love this book. They go back to it time and time again. Solving the puzzles and getting to see the pictures is a real treat.(and it encourages problem solving and persistance.) I highly recommend this book for children between 2-5.

too young
By j bird
The book itself is good but I couldn't find any description of age appropriateness. It was too young for my 3 year old granddaughter, plus the book is only about 10 pages long. The book also had dot to dots from 1-10 only. Wanted something a little harder.

Like his police chief mom and others, Adam will follow Herb's lead. But when the next threat comes from an unexpected direction, nobody is ready for it. And someone is going to pay the price―because of Adam's mistakes and mistaken trust.

Review

“Fight for power takes off in the immediate moments following the cliffhanger ending of The Rule of Three . . . will appeal to those who are interested in post-apocolyptic scenarios.” ―VOYA

“The struggle for survival in a world suddenly bereft of technology continues . . . As the community's sole pilot and therefore crucial for surveillance and reconnaissance, Adam's all too aware that in this post-apocalyptic world, his community is an island of haves in a sea of have-nots . . . The philosophical questions and killer ending will prime readers for the next book.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Just as good as the first book!
By Celeste Pewter
Full review:
I really, really liked The Rule of 3 last year - it's my go-to book, whenever I'm asked for recommendations for reluctant male readers - so I leapt at the chance to read and review the second book in the series, Fight for Power.

Author Eric Walters reconnects us with Adam sixty-six days after the events of the first book, but it feels like an eternity since life has been normal for him, Herb and the residents of Eden Mills. The residents are continuing their struggle for survival, but things have quickly becoming acrimonious in a place where survival of the fittest is law.

Whereas Walters focused on the systematic collapse of societal normals in The Rule of 3, Fight for Power is very much centered on answering the "what happens now?" of a post-apocalyptic scenario. Adam, Herb and others now have to decide how to continue functioning as a society, and their intrinsic values in this survivalist world. Herb is very much all about self-preservation, while Adam shows an empathy that readers will both understand and worry over.

Though Fight for Power isn't as necessarily urgent or action-packed as the first book, Walters asks a number of philosophical questions that will undoubtedly provoke readers to think and question as they read. Parents and educators should also take advantage by discussing some of the scenarios presented by Walters, and ask their students how they would react in those situations.
Final verdict:
I had a ridiculously good time reading Fight for Power. It was exciting and well-written, while also giving Adam, Herb and the rest of the group, the type of story that continues their personal journeys, while also encouraging readers to come back for the final installment.

(Also, THAT ending!)

I highly recommend this book for fans of the first trilogy, fans of action-adventure novels, and I also recommend this book for educators and parents who are looking for books suitable for reluctant readers.

Yes, the world that Adam and his cohorts are living in is a tough and demoralizing one. But it's his resolve, bravery and resourcefulness in the face of such dangers, that makes him an engaging and compelling hero who will draw readers in.

Developing Characters
By Michael Philliber
Society continues to disintegrate in "Fight for Power," the second volume of the "Rule of Three" series by Eric Walters. The story line follows Adam, his mother, Herb and the neighborhood into darker waters, deeper drama and a sinister spin at the end. It is an easy read written for teens that picks up where the last volume left off, and leaves the reader looking forward to the final installment.

There are ethical twists, hard decisions and compassionate actions pulsing through "Fight for Power" that will bring the reader to ask themselves, "What would I do in this situation?" Again, as Walters follows the theme from the previous book, it is a "life-boat" scenario, pushing for serious decision-making. The question that crops up in subtle, and at times obvious, ways is, "What makes us moral human beings in inhuman and immoral settings?" One gets the impression that the author has touched, and been touched, by this question in concrete ways, possibly in the environment surrounding the Kenyan orphanage he co-founded.

This dystopian account continues to be free of profanity and sexual engagements. And yet it ably addresses adult topics of life, death, survival and communal flourishing. This will make a great summer read for teens and young adults plodding through the summer blahs and out-of-school ho-hums. And parents may be interested in encouraging their kids to read this work for the purpose of fostering mature discussions with their middle and upper school children. I recommend the book.

Apocalypse Lite
By Al Hence
This continues the competently written (but not outstanding) story of suburban apocalypse. All the computer chips in the world (so far as the characters know) have failed more-or-less at once resulting in a general social collapse. The 16-year old POV character pilots his Ultra-Lite
in support of his barricaded neighborhood. It is staffed with pretty much stock characters featuring Herb "the guy who knows stuff" (e.g. Hienlien's competent man). In this volume we learn more of Herb's mysterious background and more about the plight of those outside the neighborhood walls. It also sets up the sequel. Because this is a YA novel the sex and violence are throttled way back, both are present neither is graphic. Unfortunately it has the common problems of the middle book in a trilogy. Ideally it would stand alone while still carrying forward the overall story arc. But too often the middle book mostly marks time until the concluding installment. That is the case here. It's not absolutely vital to have read the first book but it would help.

An intro to Wallykazam but not a story
By Mommy_4
Cute pictures but it's not a story. Each page introduces the cast of characters from the show and tells a little bit about them. If you're looking for a story to read to children, this is not it. This is a good book for kids that like the show and love stickers. My son really likes the stickers that come in the book but it's a not a book that he brings me to read to him.

The Accelerati Trilogy, Book One Tesla's Attic (The Accelerati Trilogy, Book One), by Neal Shusterman, Eric Elfman

After their home burns down, fourteen-year-old Nick, his younger brother, and their father move into a ramshackle Victorian house they've inherited. When Nick opens the door to his attic room, he's hit in the head by a toaster. That's just the beginning of his weird experiences with the old junk stored up there. After getting rid of the odd antiques in a garage sale, Nick befriends some local kids-Mitch, Caitlin, and Vincent-and they discover that all of the objects have extraordinary properties. What's more, Nick figures out that the attic is a strange magnetic vortex, which attracts all sorts of trouble. It's as if the attic itself has an intelligence . . . and a purpose.

Ultimately Nick learns that the genius Nikola Tesla placed the items-his last inventions-in the attic as part of a larger plan that he mathematically predicted. Nick and his new friends must retrieve everything that was sold at the garage sale and keep it safe. But the task is fraught with peril-in addition to the dangers inherent in Tesla's mysterious and powerful creations, a secret society of physicists, the Accelerati, is determined to stop Nick and alter destiny to achieve its own devious ends. It's a lot for a guy to handle, especially when he'd much rather fly under the radar as the new kid in town.

Fans of intrigue, action, humor, and nonstop surprises are guaranteed a read unlike any other in Tesla's Attic, Book One of the Accelerati Trilogy.

Praise for Tesla's Attic

"Lively, intelligent prose elevates this story of teenagers versus mad scientists, the third-person point of view offering a stage to various players in their play of galactic consequence. A wild tale in the spirit of Back to the Future, with a hint of Malamud's The Natural tossed in."--Kirkus Reviews

"This collaboration between Shusterman and Elfman tempers the scarier elements of Nick's quest with deft, humorous writing and plenty of the ordinary adventures of a new kid in school finding his niche. Hand this one to fans of Rick Riordan's Kane Chronicles or Kenneth Oppel's Airborne."--Booklist

* "...Shusterman and Elfman have crafted a plot more devious, characters far quirkier, climaxes (yes, there are two) more breathless, and a narration much, much funnier than recent mad-science offerings. Sticking with a third-person narration frees the authors to be as wryly and sophisticatedly witty as they please without compromising the veracity of their middle-school cast, resulting in storytelling as delightful as the story being told."

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—People flocked to Nick Slate's garage sale to buy up the junk found in the old Victorian house in Colorado Springs that his father inherited. In fact, an oversized stage light shone out into the rain, compelling neighbors to pay top dollar for gadgets, toys, and appliances. The 14-year-old is dumbfounded to learn that some of the items his classmates bought have peculiar features, such as Caitlin's reel-to-reel tape machine that records what she says, but plays back what she thinks-even embarrassing truths. Mitch's See 'n Say gadget predicts the future, and Vince's wet-cell electrodes can reanimate dead insects. Even Nick's brother, Danny, finds an old baseball glove that can change the arc of trajectory to catch any ball or flying sphere, making quite a spectacle at his baseball game. When sinister-looking men in pastel suits show up looking for the items, Nick and his new friends believe they are part of a group of scientists called the Accelerati and the teens must figure out the connection to Nikola Tesla, a contemporary of Thomas Edison's who once lived in Nick's house. Scientific details explain the basis for the far-fetched happenings, allowing readers to suspend their disbelief. The peril faced by this likable group of teens trying to keep Tesla's gadgets safe will keep mystery fans waiting anxiously for the next installment.—Vicki Reutter, State University of New York at Cortland

From Booklist
Everything changed after the toaster hit Nick on the head. It fell from an attic full of junk in the ramshackle Victorian house in Colorado Springs that 14-year-old Nick, his father, and younger brother have moved into from Tampa. Nick disposes of most of the things in the attic at a garage sale. What begins as a story about an adolescent boy coming to terms with his mother’s death—and his guilt about the house fire that took her—quickly takes a turn for the supernatural and sinister as Nick discovers that the items he sold are the magical inventions of Nikola Tesla. And he must recover them before they fall into the hands of a murderous secret society, the Accelerati. The first entry in a planned trilogy, this collaboration between Shusterman and Elfman tempers the scarier elements of Nick’s quest with deft, humorous writing and plenty of the ordinary adventures of a new kid in school finding his niche. Hand this one to fans of Rick Riordan’s Kane Chronicles or Kenneth Oppel’s Airborn (2004). Grades 5-7. --Magan Szwarek

PRAISE FOR UNWIND

"The shocking premise is unveiled immediately, and a nail-biting pace is sustained throughout, with the teens flung headlong into a true life-or-death struggle...these haunting debates will likely linger in the reader's mind even after the riveting plot fades...an ideal blend of philosophy and action set in a compelling futuristic landscape."―-The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Solid 4 Stars
By Talvi
Tesla's Attic is a smart, well written, and enjoyable adventure novel for tweens/young teens. The characters are unique, interesting, and well fleshed out. The plot moves well, with many bon mots and quips and an overall mystery to keep readers hooked.

Plot: Nick and his family move to Colorado Springs, Colorado after the death of his mother in a house fire. They've inherited a quirky relative's old house and in the attic are some very unusual deco-era electrical devices. After a garage sale selling them to make money, mysterious things begin to happen, all centered around the objects from the attic. Strange men show up and Nick, along with new friends, are suddenly faced with a very big mystery and a big adventure.

Though the characters are middle school aged, they seem much more grounded and older. I also appreciated that we don't have insta love among the two main characters, Nick and his neighbor Caitlin. All of the characters are very relatable and there are some surprising and interesting events in and out of the school. I enjoyed the mystery and how the author let it unfold slowly and in its own pace.

My quandary with this review is that I read the first 6 chapters to my 11 year old and she didn't get into the book at all and asked for a different one. I read it cover to cover myself, however, and thought it was excellent. So I am going to rate this a solid four stars since I'm going to assume it just wasn't her type of book/she was a bit too young to relate to 14 year olds yet. I had read her recently a book with similarly aged characters, "Turn Left At The Cow," and she had enjoyed that so I was very surprised she couldn't get into this. She said it was just too weird and too violent. I will come back to this again with her in 2-3 years.

Very Good Middle-Grade Fiction
By The Invisible Pam
TESLA'S ATTIC is a smart, entertaining read from Neal Shusterman, Eric Elfman, and Disney-Hyperion. (Thank you to Disney-Hyperion for providing me with an advanced copy)

It's a book that could have been written by Dan Brown, if he had Douglas Adam's brilliant sense of humor and ability to create engaging characters who have a wickedly sharp understanding of how the middle-school world churns.

quote--
As he looked around at this boneyard
of uselessness, Nick Slate had a simple idea.
An idea that would not only change the direction
of his life, but the very course of human existence.

He would hold a garage sale.

BACKSTORY
After loosing his mother in a horrible house fire, Nick and his brother and father move from Florida to Colorado Springs where they take up residence in a weird old house. In the attic there are a bunch of devices which they believe are junk. Shortly after they sell them at a garage sale, it becomes apparent that they are anything but junk. They are, in fact, brilliant devices created by none other than Nikola Tesla, the famous physicist/inventor.

In some ways this story is familiar. It's like other middle-grade books were there is a group of young teens that find themselves facing off against an ancient organization of bad guys.

But there's also a significant difference. And that is that Shusterman and Elfman do it right. TESLA'S ATTIC is intelligent and carefully plotted. They create imperfect characters and give them time to explain and express themselves.

The authors also just have fun with the whole concept, so that I think I laughed more at the jokes in this book than any other book I've read this year. The Douglas-esque quips about science, history and the human condition were really appealing.

--------------------quote ----
Nick took a deep breath, his resolve setting in. "We have to destroy it," he said. "We have to destroy them all."

The scorched-earth policy is a time-honored tradition of war. Villagers about to be overrun by the enemy would burn their own homes and crops to deny the enemy shelter and food. Armies would destroy their own munitions to prevent their attackers from using their own weapons against them.

The Russians used this strategy very successfully against a very irritated Napoleon, burning everything they had and retreating into Russia. And since there was no end of Russia to retreat into, Napoleon was pretty much screwed.
-----------------------

TESLA'S ATTIC isn't perfect. But I found it a lot more entertaining than 93% of the other Middle-grade fiction that I've read.

Recommend this book for those that like quirky characters and weirdness. The humor is geeky and pedantic.

Hot, New Early YA Readers
By Glenajo
Young teens and even older pre-teens will relate to this fast paced story involving various personalities that contribute to the story. Nick deals with the loss of his mother, a move across the country, and being the dreaded new kid at school. The previous tenant of the home, Nick’s uncle, left many odd inventions for Nick to analyze before they change his life forever. Nick has to understand the entire cast of characters, while attempting to evade the villains that he does not know or understand.

Great fun read with rapid action and lots of twists and turns. I recommend this to YA readers who enjoy a laugh with their action/suspense.

Late elementary science teachers could use this for an extra credit assignment, requiring the reader to analyze a few of the inventions.

I received an ARC from NetGalley.
