Shocked at real rhyming translation!!
By LA Girl
I was looking for this book for my son, who LOVES Cat in the Hat. I first saw the bilingual book. I nearly gave up. I took a Look Inside, and boy was I glad I did. It was a horrible translation that didn't rhyme at all! I was totally shocked. The main idea of Dr. Seuss's books is that they rhyme and sound fun.
I was so glad when I found this version. Spanish only is fine, and IT RHYMES!!!! So, so, so different. Amazing. This I'm going to get!

Great, rhyming and accurate Spanish translation
By Amazon Customer
Great, rhyming and accurate Spanish translation. Preserves the rhyming spirit of Dr. Seuss while helping me teach my son Spanish. I recommend purchasing this and the English version if you want to teach your child Spanish (they need the English to compare to the Spanish in order to more easily figure out what the words/concepts mean).

Faithful but cumbersome translation
By jeri larson
This translation is faithful to the content and rhyme scheme of the original, but its very faithfulness makes it incredibly awkward to read aloud. I bought this for my bilingual two-year-old, who loves the English version, based on the positive reviews for this translation, and I only made it a third of the way through the book before my tongue was exhausted. Comparing the two versions, I found each line of the Spanish to have an average of 50% more syllables name of the original. This not only makes it cumbersome and awkward; it also destroys the easy rhyme scheme of the English version, since you have to make it through so many syllables to get to the rhyme - your ear has already forgotten it. I admire the intent, but I'm sending it back because I just don't think I can make it through all the way!
Incidentally, it took two years for me to cave and buy Spanish translations after a long, fruitless, ultimately enlightening search for the Spanish- language equivalent of Dr. Seuss. It doesn't exist - there are a few well known poems and nursery rhymes, but the language simply lacks the kind of rich children's literature tradition we have in English. I report this as a fully bilingual academic scholar of Spanish Literature who has lived for years in Spain. For now, we will simply make do with the few Spanish-language children's translations that are comfortable to read, a volume or two of nursery rhymes, and non-book sources of Spanish language stimulation.

About the Author
Kira Cul'tofay started working for the sci-fi magazine Knightmares in the early 90s', mostly drawing covers and interior art but also writing a monthly comic strip. For many years she wanted to write a fantasy or sci-fi novel. She grew up loving to read but fantasy was never her interest. Cul'tofay's preference was for first-hand accounts of aliens, crypto-zoological creatures, ghosts, hauntings, curses and UFO's. She wanted to know everything she could about scientific discoveries and was fascinated with fables, fairytales and mythology. The draw here was the correlation between things that were written and spoken of in fables and religion and the fine line between what might be true. "This was where my imagination took flight. I didn't care what other people or writers thought of these topics since I had my own ideas". For almost 15 years the ideas and characters traveled around her head. They commingled with current events and the storylines continued to grow. In the summer of 2005 Cul'tofay began writing Queen of the World. This would be the first of a four-book story arc called, Royal Seasons, that encompassed each branch of royalty as well as a love of the seasons. Her fondness of characters, threads and interconnectedness shaped this new world. She envisioned a series of novels that would be made up of multi-book storylines as well as stand-alone tales. Each story would be tied together by lines that would only be visible to readers of the entire series. Much like life, the novels can continue even if certain figures didn't survive or if a reader had only picked up one book. Expect to see new titles from Cul'tofay that will keep the meridian wanderings world moving forward.

... I mentioned in my review of book 1…I was fortunate enough to have been in the test reader group ...
By Heath Stover
As I mentioned in my review of book 1…I was fortunate enough to have been in the test reader group for this book series (read all 4 back to back and a 25 page prequel short story that the author wrote specifically for us after all was said and done) and it’s nice to see these books available.

I’ll get right into the review of book 2 The Prince Collector… The author has again given a lot of different characters very distinct voices, which is awesome. This time however, we have a tale that is basically a few separate road-trips, made by a few separate groups, that end in the same location. This book is a fun ride for sure. The Prince Collector is darker and yet funnier than book 1 (the humor is probably needed to offset the weight of the story and the darker undertones). The main character is an elf girl who leads a group of humans and non-humans to a portal that will hopefully get them off Earth (2013). Since this book was written before 2013 it’s interesting to look and see what futuristic elements came to pass. I think it’s hysterical that marijuana is legal in this 2013 Washington state and in reality that has happened. You’ll have to check out the book to see what else was predicted accurately and what wasn’t. Another bonus is chapter ending art. It's been a while since I've seen that in fantasy novels.

I don’t want to give anything away but I’ll say that the elf girl and her human “love interest” are realistically done. The banter between the Jersey Devil De’sazna and the Shadow Fate are always entertaining and filled with mistrust and loathing just below the surface. The Jersey Devil in particular has some of the best dialogue I think I’ve ever read. The scene where they break into a leather store to steal a jacket long enough to hide the fact that he has the lower half of a hooved animal…hysterical. It’s like watching someone with ADD and no morals verbally spar with a serial killer who is forced to keep a partner alive that he’d rather dispatch. The Shadow Fate is written so well that I was almost rooting for him just to see how he’d react to the other characters.

While the two main road-tripper groups are the most enjoyable, you also get to follow the government group tasked with bringing them in. Watching this team (with their conflicting personalities and shady goals) is a nice change of pace from the other groups, it works best when they get dumped on and fail, because let’s face it, we’re rooting for the good guys here.

The end of book 2 is a nail-biter (even though the entire book is pretty intense-fun) but it wraps up and sets the stage for the next story (I liked how many questions were bought up during the last two chapters…what’s up with all shifting portals?), again leaving you with a strong need to see what will happen next.

My favorite of the series
By David Maguire
This was my favorite of the series (with book 4 a close second). This book can stand on its own as a single story (you don't need to have read the first book to enjoy and understand it), but it both fits well in the series as a continuation of the last book and set-up for the next. A kind of supernatural version of a fugitive/road saga. Again, really great characters and character development. Special mention goes to the "stoner sasquatch" Fosby (that probably sounds really off-the-wall, and I guess it is, but he is among the best of a cast of great characters), again breaking the mold for this type of story, Cul'tofay does an excellent job of fleshing out the characters to be so much more than tired fantasy stereotypes. My favorite aspect of the book, though, is the odd-couple dynamic between "The Jersey Devil", and Glar'Voxla, the manipulative villain. The struggle of Glar'voxla trying to suppress his impatience and annoyance to get what he wants from the self-absorbed and fun-loving Jersey Devil is just fun as heck to read... a stand out aspect of an all-around great book. I loved it!

A book full of fun and adventure!
By giagirl
If you love a fun fantasy adventure, this book is perfect! The parallel story lines are fun to read and compelling. The true magic of this book are the characters. Not only does each person (monster? entity?) have a rich personality and voice, but their interaction with one another is completely engaging. The story moves efficiently and ties together perfectly at the end. I laughed out loud so many times while reading this and also couldn't put it down. If you haven't read any work by this author, I highly recommend this book.

Great book for class or to help a child at home! (4th grade)
By A Customer
This book is excellent for an individual child to use at home or a teacher to use in his or her classroom. I used this with my fourth grade class for morning work or for remediation. Pages are easy to copy or to make overheads. Answer key is available right after each selection, which is nicer than searching in the back of the book. It touches upon all Language arts skills in a nice format. I highly recommend this book!

Helpful Methods
By Just the Truth
While this is not exactly a "grammar" book, it is well thought out. The book does not give five pages of adjective exercises, then five pages of adverb exercises, etc., like many text and workbooks. The student studies / corrects entire sentences at a time. It means that the student has a reason to remember the rules, because he is using them in context. We do not use this brand only as a review. We use them, with a little extra explanation, in everyday schooling. All our children love the variety, and the fact that the concepts are joined and mixed in everyday sentences.

In short, the book provides more opportunities for using the principles studied, rather than just fill-in-the-blank scenarios, which are quickly forgotten.

If you as a parent / caregiver are not sure about grammatical principles yourself, this will not be the book to use by itself. However, with a few printouts / clarifications off the internet, it can be used by anyone.

Language is a subject that can leave my children feeling frustrated. This workbook breaks it down into managable bits. The lessons are very effective and I have seen a great improvement in their language assignments. A great resource to make a part of your daily lessons.

Unhappy daughter = unhappy mom
By Jenn Gutierrez
I got this for my daughter, we ordered all Spectrum books in January but this is the only one we had issues with. We had to use other books as well as the internet to answer a majority of questions since it doesn't go into great detail. I would have purchased a different book had I known this beforehand, she got frustrated because she was unable to find the answers in the book and had to look in different places to answer a somewhat easy question.

I love all the Spectrum books
By salsadiva2121
I thought there would be more info in here that I could use.. but really it's just an overview of world geography... I won't be using it... I love all the Spectrum books, but I think you can just find more online than use this for 6th grade geography... Not what I was looking for.

Great 3rd grade learning material

This is a great product to use as a supplement to public school or we used this when we decided to home school our daughter. When she did go back to public school the next year she was on the same level and in some place higher than other kids within the grade level.

The Wind in the Willows - Illustrated by Arthur Rackham, by Kenneth Grahame

‘The Wind in the Willows’ is a true classic of Children’s literature. It was penned by Kenneth Grahame (1859 – 1932) and first published in 1908. Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a traditional bucolic version of the English Thames valley. ‘The Wind in the Willows’ is a novel notable for its adventure, mysticism, morality and unceasing camaraderie; loved and appreciated more than a century after its initial publication.

This text contains an introduction by A. A. Milne, the famed author of ‘Whinnie the Pooh’ and various other Children’s poems. It is also accompanied by a series of dazzling colour illustrations by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique stule, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text of ‘Wind in the Willows’, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Grahame’s masterful storytelling.

Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Fresh Pleasure With Each Reading
By my2cents
I did not read WIW until I was a young adult and have loved it ever since. Given the style of writing that was popular during Kenneth Grahame's lifetime, I can understand that some readers and young children living today might find it too slow, but I loved it so much it was one of the books that inspired me to become a writer. I think we have developed an unfortunate tendency to dumb down the material we read or share with our children, thus re-enforcing limited attention spans for ourselves and in future generations and that feels like a big loss. Grahame's use of language and his depiction of the relationships the animals share with themselves and nature are so rich and timeless, I find fresh pleasure with each re-read. And the illustrations in this one are lovely. I highly recommend this version as well as acquiring a classic hardback with larger illustrations to savor.

Childhood favorite
By A. Pelletier
This book has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. I grew up with the edition that was illustrated by Tasha Tudor but I wanted a copy with the Arthur Rackham illustrations. The book arrived in a timely manner in the condition the seller described and was a smooth and easy transaction as well as a very nice book.

A Wonderful Resource for the Middle School ELA Teacher!
By L Adero
A coworker of mine recently let me borrow this book and I immediately bought my own copy! In an educational world filled with state and national testing, it feels good to spend some time 'getting back to the basics' of spelling and grammar. These simple exercises make it possible without taking too much time away from your original lesson plans. I give the exercises as a daily warm up activity for my 7th graders (with a 5-10 minute limit). I highly recommend this item for middle school English/Language Arts teachers.

Great Resource
By Sarah Egan
If you are looking for a good way to tackle the "oh-so-fun" grammar aspect of your standards, this is it. I took 10min in the begining of each class to go over each day as bellwork. It is digestible for kids and very relevant to the skills they are suppposed to be learning. It includes, idioms and metaphors ect. My only problem is that, at least at my school, the material is a little advanced, so i used the 5th grade for 6th grade and so on.

Great Grammar Review
By Rosemary Baker
I am a high school special education teacher. I use these every day as my start up activity. I have digitized these and I project them on a Smartboard. The kids come up to the board and write on the virtual copy-- no clicks- no paper.

Japanese Fairy Tales (Illustrated), by Yei Theodora Ozaki

Japanese Fairy Tales signifies a certain set of well-known classic tales, with a vague distinction of whether they fit the rigorous definition of folktale or not.

The admixed imposters are literate written pieces, dating back to the Muromachi period (14th-16th centuries) or even earlier times in the Middle Ages. These would not normally qualify as "folktales" (i.e., pieces collected from oral tradition among the populace).

In a more stringent sense, "Japanese folktales" refer to orally transmitted folk narrative. Systematic collection of specimens was pioneered by folklorist Kunio Yanagita. Yanagita disliked the word minwa, a coined term directly translated from "folktale" (Yanagita stated that the term was not familiar to actual old folk he collected folktales from, and was not willing to "go along" with the conventions of other countries). He therefore proposed the use of the term mukashibanashi ("tales of long ago"?) to apply to all creative types of folktales (i.e., those that are not "legendary" types which are more of a reportage).

JAPANESE FAIRY TALES by Yei Theodora Ozaki
By MOTU Review
Japanese Fairy Tales, also known as The Japanese Fairy Book, is a 1908 collection of traditional fables and folktales compiled and translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki.

As I understand it, this is a somewhat liberal translation; accuracy to the source material has obviously been sacrificed to a certain extent for the sake of accessibility. Interestingly, words that would not be translated today are translated here for the sake of the Western audience ("samurai," for example, is translated "knight"). Many of these stories are not concise - they tend to meander - and some end rather abruptly. Without substantial familiarity with the original material, it's difficult to determine how much of this is the stories themselves and how much is Ozaki's doing, but I suspect the latter is more responsible.

These stories are, nevertheless, mostly quite enjoyable, and the differences and similarities with Western fairy tales are particularly interesting. (Wicked stepmothers, apparently, are a source of plot conflict the world over.)

Many of these stories are grim and violent, of the degree of the original un-sanitized Grimm Brothers' tales. There are vicious revenge stories here, and the ones involving animals bring to mind Tom and Jerry (or, perhaps more accurately, Itchy and Scratchy, never mind Happy Tree Friends), even with some obvious sanitizing ("The Farmer and the Badger" is a notable example). Many stories do not have happy endings. They certainly aren't all for small children.

Accuracy aside, Japanese Fairy Tales is a nice little collection of stories, and a decent introduction to Japanese folklore.

Vreeland, by Gabriel Strump

In every school, there is always one exceptional individual who stands out from the rest of the crowd. Seventeen-year-old Anton knows this all too well. Creative, sensitive, and musically-gifted, he possesses an intangible quality that draws both the admiration of young girls and the ire of teenage boys.
Teased since grade school for his slightly-pointed ears, and tormented in high school because of the long, brown hair he's grown to cover them, he finds solace in a world of fantasy where his unconventional nature is not only welcomed, but desired. While at summer camp, the other boys pull a cruel prank that drives him into the woods, terrified and injured, and he stumbles into a deep hole where he falls into an altered state of consciousness; or does he? When he awakens, he finds himself in a most unusual, delightful place, surrounded by five charming, female, fairy-like creatures. "This is Vreeland," explains Titi, a most captivating winged beauty. As the seed of love sprouts and grows between Titi and Anton, it is eventually discovered that he is, in fact, the son of the Great Architect, whom the Vrees revere. As the prophesied Chosen One, Anton is therefore destined to rescue the Queen of Peace from her captor-the malignant Drakon, Lord of the Weets. How will this be accomplished? What hidden strength must be realized within Anton to see this mission fulfilled? And will he ever return to the realm from whence he came?

From the Author
What if, by reading a simple fairy tale, you learn the secret of success?  Oh no, it's not obvious.  If you search for it, you may not find it.  But it's there. Over and over again, actually.  And it will make an impression on your mind.  Someday, maybe weeks after reading this story, all of a sudden--WHAM!--like a whack to the head, you'll understand.  It may make you cry.  "No way," you'll say.  "It can't be that simple."  Oh yes, it can.  It is!
Once you've had that Eureka moment, I suggest you read Vreeland again. Suddenly, the whole story becomes about YOU.  The words come alive, like magic.  You find yourself in tears over and over again.  You'll want to dance. You'll feel as though you can fly. And you realize that YOU are in love with Titi too.  There's a Titi inside each of us.  We need to go deep inside ourselves, to our very own Vreeland, and we will find her there.  This won't make sense until you discover the great secret within the story: Like Anton, YOU are the Chosen One.  Each of us has our own dragons to face. Each of us has our own adventures to experience. Each of us has our own great dreams to make come true.  And, YES, each of us is able to do that.

From the Inside Flap
The girls were gathered around a bloody carcass of some sort, from which Kyli picked up a big blob with both hands and handed it to him. Without thinking, he took it. It was warm and sticky.

"Yuck!" He dropped it.

"What did you do that vor?" Tanni cried out to him.

"What is that?" he asked.

"Vood," Taati answered. "Aren't you hungry?"

Anton nodded. He was starving, but he had never eaten raw guts from a bloody carcass before.

Taati bent over, picked up a small piece, and held it up to his mouth.

"Try it," she said smiling, "it's vree good."

He opened his mouth and let her push it in.

"That's Titi's vavorite," Kyli said.

Taati was just about to push another morsel into his mouth when Titi grabbed her by the arm and said forcefully, "You'he coming with me!"

Taati rolled her eyes. The other three giggled. Taati placed the piece into Anton's hand then walked with Titi through the curtain of leaves. Up they went into the sky.

I enjoyed this book much more than I initially thought
By Scooter
I enjoyed this book much more than I initially thought; however after I started reading it I couldn't put it down. Vreeland is a magical place where the main character Anton falls in love with a fairy named Titi, the fairy world mirrors our own and is full of adventure and true love. The romantic interests and developments are so enduring. The illustrations are charming and added to the enduring qualities of the book.

The story has a lovely message; one that we all could learn from the message that true love does indeed conquer all. The book sparks something within the reader, a desire for peace, love and a nurturer of all things living. I would highly recommend this book to a friend.

Vantastic Vree Vantasy!
By Jodie Knight
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.

Very cute! This is the story of 17yo Anton, a teen who just doesn't quite fit in. Preferring books and music over sport, and keeping his hair longish to cover his elf like ears, Anton was always the target for bullies.

After one such bullying incident at Summer camp, Anton finds himself in a strange place, Vreeland, surrounded by 5 beautiful girls, each with a tiny waist, pointed ears, dainty wings and incredible beauty...

Journeying through Vreeland, Anton meets all sorts of strange and wonderful Vrees, various other creatures, and some not so wonderful Weets.

This book is beautifully written, easy to read, even with the odd Vreeland spelling/pronunciation (it's pretty easy to follow along with once you figure it out). The story itself is relaxed, while still captivating and entertaining. The images and extra detail to the text formatting of various parts was cute and enjoyable.

I had 2 small 'problems' with the book... One, I found it quite predictable, from very early on I guessed the location of Vreeland, and secondly, Anton's lack of concern for finding his parents and returning home. Given that the target audience is tween/teen, neither of these things would have crossed their minds (for the most part). Nor do these 'problems' detract from the story in any way. For these reasons I have not removed stars from my review.

This is one I'll be encouraging my 11yo reluctant reader to pick up, I think it's a story she'll enjoy as much as I did, and can definitely see my 9yo and 17yo book worms devouring this very quickly.

I gave Vreeland 5/5 stars, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done Mr Strump, great work, and thank you for the opportunity to read your book.

Loved this book!
By JessLyn
GOOD JOB MR. STRUMP! YOUR WORDS HAVE PAINTED A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE IN MY HEAD. I did not expect to actually enjoy this book but it sucked me in and soon I felt like I was right there beside the characters experiencing their adventures along side them. I am positive Vreeland will stay alive in my mind for quite sometime. This book could easily become the next hit thing and I would not be surprised if I one day I see an animated Anton and Titi on television and little plastic replicas of them in the toy department.

At summer camp Anton runs off into the woods after the other kids play a horrible prank on him and make fun of because of his pointy ears. He falls into a hole in the grounds and finds himself in a place called Vreeland. He finds that many things here are same as home only on a much larger scale, a cherry tomato that won't even fit through the front door. He encounters many different types of people, some have wings and pointy ears, others are short and as round as they are tall, there are even some that have fins and live in the water (mermaids but that's not what they are called). He is instantly drawn to a fairy like girl name Titi and soon finds himself falling in love with her. Anton is believed to be the Chosen One who is prophesied to save the Queen of Peace from the evil Lord of the Weets.

I recommend this book to people of all ages who enjoyed books such as Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan etc

The Thirteenth Hour: An Illustrated Fairytale Fantasy Novel on the Edge of Reality, by Joshua Blum

“The ancient clock in the Land of Dreams struck thirteen, and the dreams, now free, soared back to Earth under first vesper’s light …"

The Thirteenth Hour contains 35+ fantasy illustrations of fearsome dragons, brave warriors, and aerial acrobatics, a custom music soundtrack, and a rich, interactive fantasy world that was 16 years in production.

When a boy falls asleep while reciting number facts in math class, he is teleported into a magical medieval world reminiscent of a 1980s fantasy movie, where flying dragons searching for gold raze cities to the ground with crimson fire, vengeful wizards weave terrifying spells, and even brave warriors wearing leopard-skinned underwear are given a run for their money.

In the 1st volume of this epic fantasy series, Logan has grown into a young man and must leave his sleepy village to become a soldier in the Imperial Army. It does not take long for the King’s wizards to see Logan’s potential, and he is selected to be specially trained as an Imperial Ranger for a mysterious quest to find the secret to eternal life. When he is surprisingly reunited with his childhood friend, Aurora, they set off on an adventure of a lifetime.

And so begins The Thirteenth Hour, an illustrated fantasy novel about dreams and wishes, wild hearts, and the quest to find the unsung hero that lies in all young men and women.

From the Author
The Thirteenth Hour was originally written in the span of a few months the summer after I finished high school.  I wrote it because it was something I'd always wanted to read but actually never found.  It took over a decade and a half to edit and polish the story to where I thought it might be something other people might want to read.  That time allowed me to flesh out the characters and add small details, including more illustrations, to the world of the book.  Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Excerpt from an interview with the author:

  • Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

"Dream big.  Don't give up on your dreams just because people say they're childish.  In fact, one of the best parts of growing up is finally having ways to make your dreams come true.  That may mean not giving up when things don't go your way or continuing to push forward even when the whole world is telling you 'no.'  But if they're important enough to occupy your thoughts, they're important enough to deserve a real place in your life.  That's one of the running motifs of the book."
  • What do your plans for future projects include?

"Ideas for a yet-unnamed sequel to The Thirteenth Hour have been marinating in my head for a number of years, and I recently broke ground on the introduction.  Time and life-circumstances willing, I hope to finish it in the next few years.  More immediately, I have started doing a weekly podcast that talks about the making of The Thirteenth Hour and a number of topics that are featured inside its pages (martial arts, 80s movies, fantasy books, music that inspired the book, etc).  It's an extension of what I already do on my website but offers a fun venue to have more of a conversation and do other things, like play music I wrote for the books.  It's available free on iTunes under The Thirteenth Hour Podcast."

From the Inside Flap
The Thirteenth Hour is a modern day fairy tale for adults heavily influenced by science fiction and fantasy films from the 80s as well as novels, music, and video games from that era.  In addition, if you enjoy adventures with unassuming, introspective protagonists, coming of age stories, irreverent (probably politically incorrect) humor, fantasy art, martial arts, gymnastics, acrobatics, archery, magic, throwing cards, skipping stones, and contemplating the nature of human existence, you may find yourself at home in this book.  Please visit these sites on the web for additional content related to the book and its world (including its prequel, A Shadow in the Moonlight and epilogue, "Falling Leaves Don't Weep."):

From the Back Cover
This is a story for everyone who has been told to get their head out of the clouds and stop daydreaming.

When a young boy falls asleep during school one day, he is transported to another world, where he witnesses the tale of Logan, a young man, and Aurora, his childhood friend, as they journey to the four corners of the Earth and encounter many exotic creatures, situations, and perils in a quest to find the secret to eternal life for a self-centered ruler.

Part adventure story, part travelogue, and part introspective narrative detailing the struggles we all face when becoming adults, The Thirteenth Hour blurs the line between fantasy and reality while reminding us that there is still magic in the world if we know where to look.

Fun story
By Jodie N.
Very interesting and original story. There are a few clever things the author does, such as color-coding the text of different characters, that helps the story flow more easily while giving it a sense of charm. The illustrations are fun and capture the overall feel of the story. The main characters are like-able in their 'normalcy', and it is fun to see their development as the story goes on.

There are twists and turns, many surprising and comical. There is an interesting mix of modernity with traditional old fashioned story telling and settings. The tone of the book allows the reader to follow the story arcs to their most incredible moments. The wisdom the characters learn is applicable to our every day life, but its presented in a way that is accessible.

Overall, it is a fun, easy read that has a mix of moments that make you think, make you laugh, and make you wonder what else was in store for the characters.

Nostalgic 80's style fantasy that feels like reading about old friends
By alexander blam
Strongly reminiscent of The Neverending Story with a dash of The Princess Bride, this book can best be described as a fairy tale for anyone who grew up on old school fantasy movies in the 80's or early 90's. (Those who enjoy books like The Last Unicorn and Neil Gaiman's all-ages work might also find this a treat.) Speaking of fantasy, there are plenty of wizards and knights and magical devices in this tale, but at its heart, it's really a coming-of-age story with lots of introspection about the nature of life, growing up and friendship communicated through the eyes of the twin protagonists, Logan and Aurora.

It's rare to find a book, self published or commercial, that has characters that feel like actual people you might be glad to run into in real life, but The Thirteenth Hour possesses such a quality. These characters feel like old friends - maybe because the author spent a period of over a decade developing them in his head. Whatever the reason, their emotions really shine through, and by the time I was finished with The Thirteenth Hour I found myself missing all of the folks I had met when embarking on this story. This book comes with a high recommendation because of that, and I look forward to seeing Logan and Aurora again if the author ever decides to come out with a sequel.

This is one terrific fantasy book!

The Thirteenth Hour by Joshua Blum is one terrific book! This science fantasy has a detailed, creative, fast-paced adventure with a quest for immortality and well-considered musings on life. The tongue-in-cheek humor is just wonderful. Darien IV is a king mortally afraid of dying. His father was “the king of all things stingy, prejudiced, and cruel…and he lived long enough to instill some of these fine characteristics in his son.” The clever illustrations capture the essence of the story and add to the value of this book.

Logan is an orphan who joins the army when he’s 18. The social commentary is perfect. “I don’t think I was ever quite able to reconcile how a city full of people and possibilities could leave me feeling so grimy, dejected, and alone at the end of the day.” He’s inept and a misfit, younger than the other soldiers in his group, which made me root for him to succeed. Finally he begins to find his place. “I began to dance with the wind, sword in hand. I leaped and turned, kicked and swung, lunged and dove. The wind was my partner, and I was following her lead.” Aurora, another orphan, is his best friend. The quest is filled with deadly dangers and magical beings; the ending is as satisfying as a good dream remembered. Definitely worth reading, for all ages.
