From the Author
The Thirteenth Hour was originally written in the span of a few months the summer after I finished high school. I wrote it because it was something I'd always wanted to read but actually never found. It took over a decade and a half to edit and polish the story to where I thought it might be something other people might want to read. That time allowed me to flesh out the characters and add small details, including more illustrations, to the world of the book. Thanks for taking the time to check it out.
Excerpt from an interview with the author:
- Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
"Dream big. Don't give up on your dreams just because people say they're childish. In fact, one of the best parts of growing up is finally having ways to make your dreams come true. That may mean not giving up when things don't go your way or continuing to push forward even when the whole world is telling you 'no.' But if they're important enough to occupy your thoughts, they're important enough to deserve a real place in your life. That's one of the running motifs of the book."
- What do your plans for future projects include?
"Ideas for a yet-unnamed sequel to The Thirteenth Hour have been marinating in my head for a number of years, and I recently broke ground on the introduction. Time and life-circumstances willing, I hope to finish it in the next few years. More immediately, I have started doing a weekly podcast that talks about the making of The Thirteenth Hour and a number of topics that are featured inside its pages (martial arts, 80s movies, fantasy books, music that inspired the book, etc). It's an extension of what I already do on my website but offers a fun venue to have more of a conversation and do other things, like play music I wrote for the books. It's available free on iTunes under The Thirteenth Hour Podcast."
From the Inside Flap
The Thirteenth Hour is a modern day fairy tale for adults heavily influenced by science fiction and fantasy films from the 80s as well as novels, music, and video games from that era. In addition, if you enjoy adventures with unassuming, introspective protagonists, coming of age stories, irreverent (probably politically incorrect) humor, fantasy art, martial arts, gymnastics, acrobatics, archery, magic, throwing cards, skipping stones, and contemplating the nature of human existence, you may find yourself at home in this book. Please visit these sites on the web for additional content related to the book and its world (including its prequel, A Shadow in the Moonlight and epilogue, "Falling Leaves Don't Weep."):

From the Back Cover
This is a story for everyone who has been told to get their head out of the clouds and stop daydreaming.
When a young boy falls asleep during school one day, he is transported to another world, where he witnesses the tale of Logan, a young man, and Aurora, his childhood friend, as they journey to the four corners of the Earth and encounter many exotic creatures, situations, and perils in a quest to find the secret to eternal life for a self-centered ruler.
Part adventure story, part travelogue, and part introspective narrative detailing the struggles we all face when becoming adults, The Thirteenth Hour blurs the line between fantasy and reality while reminding us that there is still magic in the world if we know where to look.

Fun story
By Jodie N.
Very interesting and original story. There are a few clever things the author does, such as color-coding the text of different characters, that helps the story flow more easily while giving it a sense of charm. The illustrations are fun and capture the overall feel of the story. The main characters are like-able in their 'normalcy', and it is fun to see their development as the story goes on.
There are twists and turns, many surprising and comical. There is an interesting mix of modernity with traditional old fashioned story telling and settings. The tone of the book allows the reader to follow the story arcs to their most incredible moments. The wisdom the characters learn is applicable to our every day life, but its presented in a way that is accessible.
Overall, it is a fun, easy read that has a mix of moments that make you think, make you laugh, and make you wonder what else was in store for the characters.

Nostalgic 80's style fantasy that feels like reading about old friends
By alexander blam
Strongly reminiscent of The Neverending Story with a dash of The Princess Bride, this book can best be described as a fairy tale for anyone who grew up on old school fantasy movies in the 80's or early 90's. (Those who enjoy books like The Last Unicorn and Neil Gaiman's all-ages work might also find this a treat.) Speaking of fantasy, there are plenty of wizards and knights and magical devices in this tale, but at its heart, it's really a coming-of-age story with lots of introspection about the nature of life, growing up and friendship communicated through the eyes of the twin protagonists, Logan and Aurora.
It's rare to find a book, self published or commercial, that has characters that feel like actual people you might be glad to run into in real life, but The Thirteenth Hour possesses such a quality. These characters feel like old friends - maybe because the author spent a period of over a decade developing them in his head. Whatever the reason, their emotions really shine through, and by the time I was finished with The Thirteenth Hour I found myself missing all of the folks I had met when embarking on this story. This book comes with a high recommendation because of that, and I look forward to seeing Logan and Aurora again if the author ever decides to come out with a sequel.

This is one terrific fantasy book!
By JSReads
The Thirteenth Hour by Joshua Blum is one terrific book! This science fantasy has a detailed, creative, fast-paced adventure with a quest for immortality and well-considered musings on life. The tongue-in-cheek humor is just wonderful. Darien IV is a king mortally afraid of dying. His father was “the king of all things stingy, prejudiced, and cruel…and he lived long enough to instill some of these fine characteristics in his son.” The clever illustrations capture the essence of the story and add to the value of this book.
Logan is an orphan who joins the army when he’s 18. The social commentary is perfect. “I don’t think I was ever quite able to reconcile how a city full of people and possibilities could leave me feeling so grimy, dejected, and alone at the end of the day.” He’s inept and a misfit, younger than the other soldiers in his group, which made me root for him to succeed. Finally he begins to find his place. “I began to dance with the wind, sword in hand. I leaped and turned, kicked and swung, lunged and dove. The wind was my partner, and I was following her lead.” Aurora, another orphan, is his best friend. The quest is filled with deadly dangers and magical beings; the ending is as satisfying as a good dream remembered. Definitely worth reading, for all ages.
