Cute idea but needs work

Cute idea but needs work. The monkey is an odd size, really short & wide. You can't stick your whole finger in, and its so wide that having only part of your finger fit doesn't give you enough movement to wiggle the monkey around very much. The story only goes through the first monkey falling off the bed.

You could keep starting the book over and count down the monkeys til there's only one. Finger puppet makes it worthwhile.Got a complete book for when she's older.

Good tales

Enjoyed these three stories. Very different and interesting interpretations of these fairy tales, using a dystopian type setting. My only problem would be with the second story, which is a red riding hood. It was good, but left some big unanswered questions. Who was the "wolf"? What was he trying to do? What was going on with the rations? I wish there would be a sequel to this one. I think it could be a good longer novella. I would definitely read some more stories.

About the Author

Nancy Tillman is the author and illustrator of the New York Times best-selling picture book On the Night You Were Born and its companion journal, The Wonder of You: A Book for Celebrating Baby's First Year. Her other books include Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You and The Spirit of Christmas. A former advertising executive, Tillman now writes and illustrates full-time. She lives in Tualatin, Oregon.

Tillman Continues to Shine

I've been a fan of Nancy Tillman since I came across On the Night You Were Born while browsing at my local bookstore. Its celebration of the uniqueness of every child, told in lovely language, has made it the gift I choose most often for expectant or adoptive parents. I also share it regularly with my own grandchildren and talk with them about how special they are. Tillman feels that the most important message for children to receive is simply, "You are loved." That message is core to my other favorite from Tillman's published works, Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You. It its pages, children are assured that, no matter how far from home they go or what they do, they will be loved.

In Tumford the Terrible, Tillman goes in a slightly different direction. The message of unconditional love remains, but the story is more humorous, focusing on Tumford Stoutt, the beloved cat of Georgy and Violet Stoutt. Tumford seems to possess a certain carelessness - or perhaps he simply jumps into situations without considering the consequences. Either way, a trail of muddy footprints, broken dishes and spilled paint are likely to follow in his wake. The mishaps can't shake Georgy and Violet's love for their cat (because "love isn't measured in muddy galoshes or broken tea dishes or trampled-on squashes. No, love is a thing that just happens, you see... like the way I love you and the way you love me"). But the Stoutts are saddened by Tummy's inability to apologize when his actions cause destruction of one sort or another. Tummy would rather hide than say he's sorry - that most difficult word. The Stoutts hope that a special treat, offered on the condition that Tummy promises to apologize should the need arise, may get him past his inability to face the music. Tummy gives his promise, but will he keep it?

Tumford the Terrible is a sweet story told in rhyming verse that many young children may identify with. (My guess is that there are plenty of adults that will identify with Tumford as well.) :-) Apologizing can be difficult and there are many people who try to avoid it when possible. But learning to accept responsibility for one's actions or to tell someone you've wronged that you regret your actions is an important lesson. In Tumford the Terrible, Tillman remembers to assure readers that love remains, even when behavior is less than perfect. And making certain that children understand that as well is even more important.

As always, Tillman's lovely artwork is as appealing as her words, making the book a visual pleasure for children and adults. My favorite pieces in Tumford the Terrible are those showing the large black and white cat hiding among teddy bears on a bedroom shelf and strutting to town in his yellow boots.

Nancy Tillman continues to create books that I absolutely love having in my collection. Sharing them with my grandchildren and enjoying them on my own is sheer joy.

A must read!

I bought this for my 27-month-old grandson. He loves cats and he loves to have me read to him. From the first moment we sat down to read it, he was captivated by the colorful pictures and adorable story. I was afraid it might be a little too long for him at his age, but he was attentive until the very end. And, of course, as we saw pictures of new things he pointed and asked, "What's that?" The story line of Tumford learning how to apologize is great too. Lessons taught with warmth, love and laughter really sink in. The next time I was over at his house, the book was on his bedside table...telling me it was a favorite!

The best known tragedy of Euripedes.

This play is regarded by many as Euripedes' masterpiece and should be required reading of all educated people. It retells the tragic story of Medea, who had helped Jason in his quest, became his wife, gave him two sons, and feels betrayed since he is marrying the daughter of the ruler of Corinth (Jason has come to the conclusion that this is necessary to protect Medea and his sons since she is a barbarian). With horrible vengence, she kills the bride and the king and then kills her two sons. Euripedes depicts how much passion and vengence can overcome not only individuals, but those who strive to be rational. Men (and governments) can't ignore the influence of emotion, and even irrationality, on their decisions and actions, even when those actions may seem rational and just. Man has to remain flexible. The play also shows how emotions, anger, and unbridled fury can cause a person to do stupid and irrational acts. Euripedes is undoubtedly warning Athens with respect to the war that is going on with Sparta.

A murderous mother, a vain princess, a selfish husband, two unfortunate children, a naïve friend, a foolish king, and an inactive chorus are the key players in Euripides' morbid tale of humanity.Euripides brilliantly masks his agenda with the unreal (dragon-drawn chariot, poisoned dress, witchcraft) but upon close observation one can see his desire to unveil real problems in the world he lived in. All of Euripides' characters represent their stations, personifying the failure Euripides saw with males, females, citizens, authorities, and more. Reading through at a normal speed one will walk away feeling gloomy and none the better from the reading. But taking the time to delve into the mutliple levels and hidden meanings, one will find this old classic to be a rewarding yet chilling reading. Don't pass this up - Euripides DELIVERS!

Truly deserving of five stars

I've heard a few professors say that while the Dover Thrift Editions are very economical for cash-strapped college students, the translations are hit or miss. I've read some Dover editions of classical works for both classes and on my own and that's definitely true, but as someone interested in ancient literature (largely prose, but I like verse as well) and who has been constantly frustrated over the years with the very complex (to put it mildly) translations that have flooded the market in years past, Rex Warner's translation of the Greek tragedy Medea was not only easy to follow, but I just wanted to keep reading until I was finished - and was disappointed when it ended!

So, yes, this is one Dover Thrift Edition where you get more for your money. - Donna Di Giacomo

Awesome book and must read

Arjun : without a doubt. Truly awesome book by Dr Sweety Shinde.

When I first came across the title, I was not sure I wanted to read another of Gita- Mahabharata thing.
But somehow the book's cover and FB page made me give it a try and I am glad I did.

No, it is not a twisted version of Mahabharata. It is a saga of Arjun the great warrior, who never got the due credit for his greatness and Draupadi who has always been misunderstood through ages.
The narrative is gripping and as the story unfolds the reader is thirsty for me. Like the author words it ' If learning was a river I was forever unquenchably thirsty'....so is the reader thirsty for more coz it ends too soon.
What I liked best was trying to understand Draupadi's feeling when she was forced into polyandry, her love for Arjun and her strength and feelings when she was disrobed.

The book has lovely quotes, and few of my favourite are
1. Parents should come with a warning sign that they are not perfect; elders are just flawed people who happen to be born earlier.
2. Tears are infinitely more precious than blood. Blood spurts from the body, tears stream from the soul.
3. If motherhood transformed a woman into a goddess, then why should the act responsible for this transformation be a sin.
4. But the best is always a state of flux, it is a constant endeavour; not a one time title.
5. Virtue is that which lasts inspite of power.
6. No person is great in isolation. It takes many hands to shape life. Denial would mean conceit and conceit is not the same as self respect.

Overall, definitely a must read.

Deep and Dramatic

The Mahabharatha has traditionally been a plot-oriented epic with a multitude of main characters. It is for the first time that I am seeing it through the eyes of Arjun. Equal time and importance has been given to portraying the character of the eminent Draupadi, who provides the perfect foil for Arjun, performing the role of an antagonist and ally. The characters of Arjun and Draupadi continue to haunt me long after I completed reading the novel wherein lies the real victory of the author - getting into the skin of the historic characters and employing her creative intelligence to etch their trials and tribulations within the framework of the unalterable incidents from the epic.

While my tryst with the Mahabharatha started several decades ago, the five Pandavas somehow functioned as a collective protagonist and I had viewed Arjun as just one of the lead characters (akin to one of the heroes in the multi-starrer Hindi films popular in the 70's and 80-'s!. This novel made me realize that he is the most under-revered hero from Hindu mythology, as the author effectively intertwines the courage of a valiant warrior with the fragility of his emotional relationships - with Krishna and with Draupadi - traversing the gamut, from tranquility to trauma. The depth of understanding displayed by the author and her ability to impactfully dramatize the complex cast of characters of this complicated epic is truly commendable.

The novel is written in first person from a dual point of view - Arjun and Draupadi - a Herculean achievement which can get tenuous at times. Staying with each point of view a little longer in a chunk rather than crossing over to the other character too soon would have made for an even more effective read, as would a variation in the tone to identify the two points of view with greater ease. The permutations of interactions and conversations between Arjun, Draupadi and Krishna are a treat to consume and a major highlight of the book. (The dialog tags could have been a tad more prominent though, the conversations would have been even more enjoyable if I did not have to figure out who was saying what at times, but this is a minor distraction)

While the plot driven epic had always made excuses for the follies of Yudishtir, the epitome of Dharma, reading this novel through the eyes of Arjun and Draupadi - gave me my biggest Aha insight - that this was but a crutch to cover up his character weaknesses, since he represented the 'good side' of the epic! And full credit goes to the author for demystifying this myth without being judgmental.

The novel is a must read for all those who have any connection or exposure however limited, to the Mahabharatha.

Another Perspective on the Age old saga

Arjun: Without A Doubt is one of the latest to join the bandwagon of Mythological story being retold. This time around we get a glimpse into the Epic Mahabharata from Arjun and Draupadi’s perspective.

Having said that, I really have no need to summarize the story as almost everyone knows it already. Instead, let me tell you about what I thought of it as a book and my take on the way the Epic has been narrated. The first thing that attracts attention is the fact that the author has chosen to tell the story from Arjun’s point of view. Arjun is probably the most popular and most beloved of all the Pandavas and as such it can be difficult to narrate the story. However, the author has done a good job of it and anybody who adores Arjun will love reading this book. On the other hand, we also get a glimpse of Draupadi’s perspective on everything as the story unfolds – I was enchanted by the scene of her Swayamvar. This book also gives us a glimpse into Draupadi’s mind about her polygamous status and the Vastraharan episode. The author’s language and narrative style is very interesting and inviting. She has her own style with the language she uses as well as her narrative. The language is not ‘flowery’ yet it has a nice feel to it while the narrative is very descriptive. I was engrossed in the pages as they simply flew by.

Now it is time for the things that I did not like as much… Without giving out many spoilers, I have to say that I did not always agree with some of the author’s interpretations and justification for some of Arjun’s actions. I understand that the author wanted to show Arjun, her protagonist, in a good light… but to imply that Arjun was almost never at fault or always had the right reasons for his actions is just not done. Also, to put Arjun on the right side, the author has given some of the other characters a darker shade than necessary. And while I am not saying that none of the others were at fault, I just wish we had seen the grey areas of Arjun’s life to make him more real.

Overall, this made for an interesting read that I did enjoy to the fullest while reading it. It might make you rethink on some of the events of Mahabharata and also see some of the characters in a new light.

This is a wonderful book for anyone with a taste for humorous fantasy. The stories are short and well written. There are no illustrations in this particular edition. Be aware of that, if you like the book enough, and consider finding a more robust printing to love and keep on a book shelf. Ultimately, though, any reader will find an extremely enjoyable read here.

This book gives interesting stories with a moral at the end of each story and has illustrations on each page. The stories vary in length but can be read quickly due to the author's writing style. While different from "Oz" books, these stories are still a lot of fun.

Oh the planets we’ll know

Ok that was a corny title. We enjoy this book and its colorful illustrations. Both my three and –almost five- year olds really like it. It can be a good start to a conversation about space and planets. It is fun to read out loud and then go get other library books on the topic. In the tradition of other Dr. Seuss books it rhymes.

The book is updated to have a sad reminder that Pluto is no longer in the line up and we end our naming game with Neptune. And to make it even better it is a level 2 reader and slowly but surely after several readings my son is starting to feel comfortable reading a few pages when he is in the mood. I expect that after many readings the kids will learn to name the planets without noticing. What a great addition to our kid library!

All good except two things

This book was extremely good, for me a least. I didn't like that there were a few sentences written by the greater in a different language the book says what they mean, but when it says it the second time it doesn't say what it means and I forget what they mean. The second thing is that they have the first book for free but the others cost money. They expect you to read a good book and buy the next, but I won't fall for that trick. DON!T TRY TO TRICK ME EVER AGAIN AUTHORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Story Captivated Me!

First, let me say that I am not a Minecraft junkie. I got this book because my son likes Minecraft. Wasn't sure if I would like it, but it only took a few pages before I was sucked into the story. Wanting to find out what happened next, I had to keep reading. Great story and written very well

This is another great book from Mark Mulle. Great adventure and immersive characters. This book has one problem, a few sentences are in Swedish. The book only tells you the translation once and the phases are repeated several times throughout the book. The plot of this book is that a player named Ben creates a world in Minecraft to find Herobrine. Ben soon discovers that he is not alone and that a player named Tess is in his world even though he created the world on single player. Ben and Tess explore the world to find Herobrine, finding other NPC's (non player characters) in their quest to find Herobrine. This book is great for all ages of Minecraft fans.

I am not the author but merely a private publisher. Howard Pyle was born in 1853 and was well known as an illustrator, training men such as N.C. Wyeth. My wife and I wanted to reproduce some of his works to be enjoyed by a younger generation and have entirely re-typeset all the books we published as well as cleaned up some of the images to make them suitable for reprinting. This was a labor of love and we hope you enjoy reading the books as much as we did.

We have reprinted the four books about King Arthur and his knights as well as The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, all in a blue hardbound format.

About the Author
Howard Pyle was a successful American author and illustrator, many of whose books are aimed at younger readers. After only a few formal lessons in artistic techniques, Pyle initially began his career creating illustrations for magazines, finally publishing his first work in Harper s Weekly at the age of twenty-five. Pyle s career took off, and he was soon creating his own stories and publishing illustrated books for children. His most famous work is The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which was the first cohesive retelling of the medieval legend of Robin Hood. His other famous works include Men of Iron, a tale about knighthood, and a four-volume collection about King Arthur. Howard Pyle died in Florence in 1911 at the age of fifty-eight.

Stirs the imagination

Howard Pyle weaves another masterpiece in this, the sequel to The Story of King Arthur and His Knights. It is frought with adventure, chivalry, and Pyle's own version of Old English to go with it. Pyle's english and his drawings add greatly to the already great story, making this series one of the best I have ever read.

This book details the early adventures of Sir Launcelot, Sir Tristram, and Sir Percival. One would think that the jousts/battles would get repetitive and boring after a while, but Pyle is so masterful a storyteller that it never gets boring, and each adventure captures the imagination more than the last.

one of Pyle's amazing works

If you can find this in any addition, though the hardback is very nice gift, it is a great addition to any Grail Lore Collection.
Pyle did so many books great books on the Medieval Myths and Legends. First published in 1905, Pyle wrote and illustrated his own tales, such as Lancelot, Tristam & Isoult, and Percival. The pen in and ink drawing are simply amazing and so bring alive his stories.
Highly recommended for those interested in tales of the Round Table. Hopefully, with the interested Tolkien's Rings, it will reawaken a hunger for these tales of chivalry, of valour and those willing to stand and fight in what they believe.

This book did not have Howard Pyle drawings. The stories are great, but the lack of pictures is a drawback.
