The Panchatantra Retold: Part 4 - Labdhapranasam, by Sonal Panse

What do you do as a father and a King if your three heirs are indolent and ignorant, and, as a result, the very future of your kingdom is at stake?

You turn the three brats over to the intellectual powerhouse Pandit Vishnu Sharma!

The Panchatantra Retold is a collection of entertaining and enlightening folk-tales from Ancient India, originally narrated by Pandit Vishnu Sharma to the three Princes of Mahilaropya to infuse them with the much-needed worldly wisdom that traditional learning had failed to impart.

So the Panchatantra can actually be described as an Ancient self-help book on how to navigate successfully through the various vicissitudes of life. It is important to mention though that these stories are not didactic and moralistic in any sentimental, black and white way. The good do not always win here. This led the German scholar Dr. Johannes Hertel to describe the stories as 'Machiavellian' in tone. It is a possibility that Machiavelli himself was familiar with the stories from the Panchatantra and that they were something of an influence for his own work 'The Prince'.

The stories offer a vivid picture of life in Ancient India, and it is interesting to discover that, for all the progress made over the many centuries since the Panchatantra was written, the essential qualities of human psychology have not altered to that great an extent.

The stories are divided into five sections - Mitra Bheda (Loss of Friends), Mitra Samprapti (The Gaining of Friends), Kakolukiyam (The Fierce Enmity between the Crows and the Owls), Labdhapranasam (Loss of Gains), and Apariksitakarakam (Ill-considered Action).

This is the fourth section, Labdhapranasam (Loss of Gains). The main story is about how the friendship between Karalmukh the crocodile and Raktamukh the monkey is destroyed when Karalmukh, giving in to his wife's greed, tries to trick and kill Raktamukh. The rest of the stories evolve as the crocodile tries to patch things up with the monkey.

There are 12 stories in this volume.

Great fables with a punch!
By vardan partamyan
I enjoyed another trip down the mysterious lane of the Indian lore and it was once again satisfying and irreverent in the best way possible. One small remark is that I would love to see the author's touch more defined... even the classical stories can use a re-imagining and re-telling with the best example of that being The Odyssey and the Ulysses by James Joyce. Nevertheless, solid work and one worth reading for sure!

Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves: Expanded Edition (Story River Books), by Maggie Schein

Limited to 500 numbered copies, the hardcover collector’s edition of Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves: Expanded Edition, includes audio CDs of select fables narrated by two-time Grammy Award winner Janis Ian and a colophon page signed by author Maggie Schein, illustrator Jonathan Hannah, and foreword writer Pat Conroy.

An enticing collection of tales told in the fabulist and metafiction traditions, Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves embraces a cyclical movement of renewal, like the ancient ouroboros motif itself, in which artfully rendered answers always give rise to perplexing new questions. Maggie Schein’s stories introduce medicine men, monks, immortals, witches, seekers, and souls in various stages of their cycles in and out of lived life, as well as the occasional talking animal, all searching for meaning and for connections to one another through storytelling. Each fable is a meditation on love, death, growth, pain, identity, self, spirit, cruelty, beauty, and the natural order, as seen from the perspectives of the primal, the celestial, or the spiritual. Rooted in the archetypes of mythology and philosophy, Schein’s lost cantos are stories about the events that make up our lives and our deaths. She makes deft use of familiar forms and universal symbols to explore anew through narrative those questions and experiences that have always vexed us about our confounding existence and the speculative possibilities that abound within and beyond the moral coil. Schein’s tales ask us to reconsider what it means to live and to die, to be simultaneously a creature of magic and the mundane, of the extraordinary and the all-too-ordinary. The result is a delicate but potent collection of alluring fables for the modern reader, recalling classical stories and myths of days long past and asking once more the questions that continue to haunt us.

This expanded edition adds three new fables not included in the original edition as well as new illustrations for all eleven stories from artist Jonathan Hannah.

Review
“Maggie Schein has written a book that takes us back to the primal, at times almost preconscious, beginnings of story, yet within her narratives we encounter the core of concerns that even now define our humanity. Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves is a delight.”―Ron Rash

“The title, Lost Cantos of the Ouroboros Caves: Expanded Edition, suggests music and poetry, and the exquisite sentences that comprise this collection of fables are as lyrical as any nineteenth century romantic poet. There is also much wisdom in Maggie Schein’s stories, which are at once insightful and mystical and always filled with wonder.”―Marjory Wentworth

“Maggie Schein is a writer who wears her love of language on her sleeve. Her fables, told in dancing, almost musical prose, unveil myths that seem drawn from a time long before history began. Find a quiet place, sit back, and prepare to be dazzled.”―John Grant, Hugo and World Fantasy Award-winning joint editor of The Encyclopedia of Fantasy

"Maggie Schein's stories are both charming and alarming (the rhyme is unintentional, but the sentiment deeply felt.) The only comparable writer I can think of is my old flame and model Isak Dinesen. Each of Schein's tales has the taste of air charged with anticipation of an approaching storm. They are genuinely philosophical in a way which is very rare, frightening in a way far removed from scary, and, most impressively, they are often philosophically frightening―which is almost unheard of. I haven't read anything remotely like them in a long time."―Peter S. Beagle

Mermaid Romance for Teens and New Adults
The stunning finale of the California Mermaids series by Kristina Ludwig, author of the best selling Amish Couples, Amish Hearts, and Amish in College books!

Note: This book is part of a series, but can be read independently of the others.

Mermaid Doria bears an unusual family curse: twelve moons after she turns eighteen, she must choose between living on land or in the sea, and remain there—permanently. The only way to break the curse is by finding love with a half-merman, thus uniting the realms of land and ocean forever.

Doria’s beloved Aunt Oceania chose land, and Doria has been dreaming of visiting her ever since she was five years old. Now that she’s finally turned eighteen, she makes the long-awaited trip—to Roaring 20s San Francisco, where her aunt and uncle have become well-known jazz musicians.

Meanwhile, Doria’s mer-beau Dylan loves her more than anything in the world. The problem: she doesn’t feel the same way about him. Dylan worries about Doria in the wild world of speakeasies and ladies’ men, so he follows her to land, trailing her in disguise as she navigates the 1920s social scene.

There, Doria meets and falls for Stanley, a handsome landsman who just happens to be a gossip reporter. As he asks her question after question about her life, Doria worries that he will uncover her secret identity as a mermaid.

Will Dylan be able to win Doria’s heart, or will Doria follow in her aunt’s footsteps and choose a landsman? Can Dylan watch over Doria without blowing his cover? Will Stanley uncover Doria’s secret? And does either of Doria’s love interests hold the power to break the mermaid’s curse?

Good Book, Awful Characters, Terrible Love Relationship
By Anonymous Reviewer
I'm sad to say that I was rather disappointed in this one. The last two books were good, but this one felt like a real step backwards, and I found the reason for that being the characters.

First was my dissatisfaction with Oceania and Xavier. The hero and heroine from the last two books return in a very disappointing wave. The kind and caring couple have been reduce to somewhat obnoxious, irresponsible, party-goers that care more about going out drinking and partying than anything else. They finally meet Doria after all these years, and they take her to an underground drinking bar and pretty much abandon her there while they go and have a good time. Oh sure, they do care about her, but they don't act as very good hosts, or even a very good aunt and uncle. They're even somewhat neglectful parents to their daughter. What happened to the kind-hearted and innocent couple from the last two books. They've been replaced by these rather unlikeable and immature individuals.

Then there's Dylan. I must say that I did not like him at all. He's in love with Doria, but it's on an obsessive stalker level. He knows that it's been Doria's dream for years and years to go to land, yet he does whatever he can to make sure she'll come back and stay in the ocean forever. Even though the decision is hers and hers alone to make, he keeps trying to influence her choice, even going so far as telling her he loves her and planning to ask her to marry him the day she intends to go to land. It's a very selfish and shallow thing to do, and he knows it is and can tell it would upset her, but doesn't care. And when she does go on land, he stalks her under the pretense that he wants to "protect" her from the humans when it's more than obvious that he just doesn't want her to meet any guys. And when she meets Stanley, he is adamant about how the guy can't be trusted. Though he was right, until we find out the truth about him, Dylan's dislike and distrust is completely unjustified. Even when Doria finds him following her, severs all ties with him, and demands he goes back to the ocean, he still uses a magic mirror to spy on her endlessly. He's also incredibly racist to humans. While on land, he meets a girl at a dance club and acknowledges that she's nice and very beautiful, yet he still finds her repulsive for no other reason than she's a human.

Doria, on the other hand, I really adored. She was a great character, and I loved her. But I was gravely disappointed in her relationship with Dylan; I believe I made my feelings for him known above. She and Dylan have been childhood friends for years, and, at most, they've been sweethearts, but never actually became a couple. They've never even kissed once! Even when he tells her that he loves her, it's clear that she doesn't return his feelings for think of him that way. When she discovers him stalking her, she's understandable angry and tells him in no uncertain terms that she wants nothing more to do with him and to leave her alone. Yet at the very end, when he suddenly appears, she's hopelessly in love with him. Her feelings literally just come out of nowhere. He's been a dear friend all her life, then she thinks of him as a smothering stalker jerk who wants to control her decision in life, then suddenly, upon seeing him again, for no reason at all, she's ready to marry him, eternally merge her soul with his, and remain in the sea forever with no hope of ever visiting her aunt or going on land again. It's like, where the hell did that come from? The author pretty much disregarded everything that happened and pretty much decided to make Doria love Dylan simply for the sake of making them a couple. Very disappointing.

So, yeah, while the book was good, the characters and their relationships were the real problem, and they greatly reduced my enjoyment of the book. I really hope to find an improvement in the characters next time, and hopefully Oceania and Xavier won't be such rotten people anymore.

A joy to read
By Jonny
This book by Kristina Ludwig is the 3rd in the California Mermaid series.

The story is very interesting and thought-provoking. It isn't just another story but it has a lot of meaning and actually allows readers to reflect upon. While reading I felt like I was one of the main characters. I was really drawn inside the story.

If you have read the other books in the series then this book is going help put the entire story together.

I recommend reading this 3rd book.

A great series!
By Warrior Princess
What a great ending to the series! I loved the previous mermaid books, and I couldn't wait to get this one. An interesting mix of reality and fantasy, mythology, symbolism and human (human-like?) relationships. I love the refrain of, "I never break a promise." The story is fast-paced and exciting. Very romantic, too. My only complaint? It's the last book of the series...

A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales: For girls and boys, by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The author has long been of opinion that many of the classical myths were capable of being rendered into very capital reading for children. In the little volume here offered to the public, he has worked up half a dozen of them, with this end in view. A great freedom of treatment was necessary to his plan; but it will be observed by every one who attempts to render these legends malleable in his intellectual furnace, that they are marvellously independent of all temporary modes and circumstances. They remain essentially the same, after changes that would affect the identity of almost anything else. He does not, therefore, plead guilty to a sacrilege, in having sometimes shaped anew, as his fancy dictated, the forms that have been hallowed by an antiquity of two or three thousand years. No epoch of time can claim a copyright in these immortal fables. They seem never to have been made; and certainly, so long as man exists, they can never perish; but, by their indestructibility itself, they are legitimate subjects for every age to clothe with its own garniture of manners and sentiment, and to imbue with its own morality. In the present version they may have lost much of their classical aspect (or, at all events, the author has not been careful to preserve it), and have, perhaps, assumed a Gothic or romantic guise. In performing this pleasant task,--for it has been really a task fit for hot weather, and one of the most agreeable, of a literary kind, which he ever undertook,--the author has not always thought it necessary to write downward, in order to meet the comprehension of children. He has generally suffered the theme to soar, whenever such was its tendency, and when he himself was buoyant enough to follow without an effort. Children possess an unestimated sensibility to whatever is deep or high, in imagination or feeling, so long as it is simple, likewise. It is only the artificial and the complex that bewilder them.

About the Author

Born in 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne is known for his historical tales and novels about American colonial society. After publishing The Scarlet Letter in 1850, its status as an instant bestseller allowed him to earn a living as a novelist. Full of dark romanticism, psychological complexity, symbolism, and cautionary tales, his work is still popular today. He has earned a place in history as one of the most distinguished American writers of the nineteenth century.

Delightful!
By Gene Olson
I read these books when I was a child. I started reading these stories to the kiddo's. It's very nice to have a quiet time in the evening reading these wondrous stories to the children. The discussions that invariably present themselves are worth their weight in gold, then add to that the spark of imagination that results is truly amazing. No amount of video games or TV & movies can replace one hour of Nathaniel Hawthorne!

Even though this book does not include the wonderful lithographs the original books did, the stories stand by themselves. Of course, the seriously low price of the books would negate the pictures. The book itself is high quality. The paper cover is very thick & glossy. The pages of the book are bound to the spine for longevity. I can predict this book will disappear and miraculously reappear in one of the childrens bookshelves when they strike out on their own, to seek their fame & fortune, defeating hideous monsters they meet along the way.

Learn more of the wonderful Greek myths!
By Richard and Liz
What a great book of "tales" to share with the family. Although the formatting of the titles is a little messed up in this book, once you realize that the "V's" should be "U's" you are OK and it is only in the titles not the actual stories. The stories included are as follows:

Perseus and the Gorgons * Midas * Pandora's Box * Hercules and the Three Golden Apples * Miraculous Pitcher * Bellerophon, Pegasus and the Chimaera

Treat your children to a treat with these in-depth, highly descriptive, exciting tales. Even one our children who finds it had to sit still was gripped by these stories. SO much better than some of the other weak and watery Greek myths out there for children.

Tanglewood Tales are ot to be Mythed
By Mark C. Donnell
These are classic stories from Greek mythology. The easy way to introduce young people to Perseus, Mercury, the Minotaur,. Medusa and other tales which afe referred to in films and literature. Long introductions may be skipped to get directly to the stories.

Duchess insight
By Jimena Sanchez Alvarez
I loved this book. It is all written from Duchess perspective, and provides information about classes and what life is within the school of the characters of Ever After High. A bit of teen drama but just the right amount to show what the struggles the students must overcome to follow their destinies or found new ones or discover themselves :)

THE FAMOUS FIVE...
By Phillip Taylor MBE
THE FAMOUS FIVE

THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.

Ageless Enjoyment
By Amazon13
My 8 year old received this set as a gift. We read them together. It's fun to see my son enjoying it, and it takes me back to my childhood days. He does not like to stop at the end of a chapter. I remember the time when I felt the same; Enid Blyton has that quality to make you yearn to know what's going to happen next, whether you're 8 or 80. She has instilled the love for reading in children for ages, and continues to do so. Thank you Enid Blyton for the wonderful impact that your writing has had in our lives!

This 8 year-old swallowed these whole
By Stephen Foster
OK, I'm now 65, and haven't read these since I was ~12, but they were pure oxygen to 8 year-old me. The writing is direct and simple, and the idea of having four amazing friends who wanted to share my adventures was wonderful. My two friends and I re-enacted the books, for years.

The Swallows and Amazons series (written ~1930) is just as good. Pure candy for the kid-brain, with a wee bit of education sneaked in about how the world used to be.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Brooks's deceptively simple poems for children combined with Ringgold's vibrant illustrations help to rejuvenate this collection first published in 1956. Inspired by Brooks's Chicago neighborhood, the events, feelings and thoughts of the children in the verse take on a timeless quality. The language and tone appear to be casual, but each poem is tightly constructed, rhythmic and distinctive. Whether the poem takes a child as its subject or unfolds in a child's voice, the images are universal. A new puppy has a "little wiggly warmness" and will not "mock the tears you have to hide." The snow is "white as milk or shirts./ So beautiful it hurts." Brooks's language remains economical yet astonishingly inventive. She describes how "Maurice importantly/ peacocks up and down./ Till bigly it occurs to him/ (It hits him like a slam)" that he won't be able to pack up his friends and take them along when he moves to another town. A few of the poems seem dated (kids call their mothers "Mother-dear," and when Paulette wants to run, her mother says "You're eight, and ready/ To be a lady") but on the whole, the collection will be as appealing to today's readers as it was to a child of the 1950s. Ringgold's bold illustrations, outlined with her signature thick black lines, are among some of her best and most narrative works since Tar Beach. She moves easily from cityscapes to cozy interior scenes around the family dinner table or singing at church. Ages 7-10. (Jan.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4—The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet first published this collection of 34 brief poems in 1956. Each one presents a different child involved in a pastime that still figures in the lives of contemporary children. Mexie and Bridie are enjoying a tea party, small Narcissa is sitting still while her imagination transforms her into an ancient queen, and Michael hopes no one will notice that he holds his mother's hand during a thunderstorm. Some of the selections, such as "Robert," are reflective: "Do you ever look in the looking-glass/And see a stranger there?/A child you know and do not know,/Wearing what you wear?" Others, such as "Otto," offer a bit of social commentary:" It's Christmas Day. I did not get/The presents that I hoped for. Yet,/It is not nice to frown or fret./To frown or fret would not be fair./My Dad must never know I care/It's hard enough for him to bear." The original illustrations were black-and-white line drawings, done by Ronni Solbert, and despite the fact that the Bronzeville area of Chicago was also known as the Black Metropolis, featured white children. Ringgold's trademark, vibrantly colored, stylized art features children of color. This book is an excellent opportunity to introduce the work of an important author to a new generation. It should be considered a first purchase for most libraries.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

From Booklist
*Starred Review* This collection of 34 poems by Pulitzer Prize winner Brooks takes its title from a historically black neighborhood in Chicago, and the poems, each named for a child or children, come across as verbal snapshots of Bronzeville's young residents. When first published in 1956, the poems were paired with Ronni Solbert's occasional line illustrations, which often left the ethnicity of Brooks' subjects open to interpretation. Not so in this version, fully and exuberantly illustrated by the creator of the Caldecott Honor book Tar Beach (1991) and other titles. Ringgold envisions the poem's protagonists as members of an urban, African American community and renders them in the assertive colors and faux-naif style for which she is best known. Thickly outlined in black and unmoored from traditional rules of perspective, Ringgold's depictions share the childlike sensibility of Brooks' words, whether expressed in skipping-rope rhythms or in coinages that children will relish ("When I hear Marian Anderson sing, / I am a STUFFless kind of thing"). Splashed edge to edge in wild color and activity, the large-format pages will draw children to the work in a way the previous edition's unassuming appearance did not, ensuring a wider audience for poems that honor the rich experiences of children as individuals, by turns mischievous and joyful, pensive and sad. A tip of the hat to an all time great
By E. R. Bird
We needn't act so surprised that the great twentieth century American poet Gwendolyn Brooks wrote books of poetry for children. What could be more natural? This poet shares her gifts with the small people that inhabit her hometown (in this case, Chicago). What did surprise me was the original publication date of this title. Now I read through this entire collection of urban poetry and I had a fairly clear idea that these poems must have been written in the 1970s. After all, collections of poems featuring African-American children were just beginning to blossom after the Civil Rights movement. I was feeling pretty smug until I glanced at the date in question. 1956. So roughly twenty years before the United States understood the importance of creating children's literature for people from all walks of life, Gwendolyn Brooks was taking matters into her own hands.

"Bronzeville Boys and Girls" collects thirty-four short poems about children into a single compendium. Each poem contains the name of a child. This child is either the subject of the poem, or the person delivering it. Taken as a whole, the book feels like nothing so much as a slightly updated series of nursery rhymes. Brooks is an accomplished poet and there is something about the way her lines scan that feels old and established. Take, for example, this poem entitled, "John, Who Is Poor". "Give him a berry, boys, when you may/ And, girls, some mint when you can/ And do not ask when his hunger will end/ Nor yet when it began". For me, these poems acknowledge the struggles that all children, regardless of race, face in the world's poverty laden big cities. Though most the poems have an element of whimsy or light-heartedness to them, many are socially conscious. The boy who does not receive what he wants for Christmas reflects, "To frown or fret would not be fair/ My Dad must never know I care/ It's hard enough for him to bear". You won't find any poems about some of the harsher aspects of city living (drugs, prostitution, etc.) that are so common these days, in part because this book was published so very long ago. Also, it is written with a distinctly young age group in mind. Accompanying Ms. Brooks's verses are various illustrations by Ronni Solbert. The combination of words with images felt almost like a predecessor to Shel Silverstein at times, though I'd be hard pressed to tell you exactly why. It's just something about the occasional silliness of the children pictured.
At the moment, the big urban nursery rhyme crowd pleaser is the accomplished, "The Neighborhood Mother Goose". But that book just restructures old nursery rhymes for contemporary kids. Gwendolyn Brooks went so far as to create new and exiting nursery rhymes for the children of her day and age. Today, most of them read as crisp and clearly as they did the day they were made. There are some exceptions, of course. A couple poems feel a little stilted or overly formal towards the kids reading them today. But many are fine examples of superior writing. If you ever find that you are able to locate a copy of "Bronzeville Boys and Girls", I suspect that you will not regret the fact any time soon.

Great Poetry!
By This Kid Reviews Books
What I Thought– This is a nice multicultural poetry book that takes place in the 1950’s (or sometime around then). The poems take place in the Bronzeville section of Chicago, but could be anywhere where there are kids. They are simple poems, narrating from a character’s view. I like how it shows how people thought back then (in one poem, a girl is lamenting that she won’t be able to run anymore because it’s unladylike). Ms. Ringgold’s illustrations add a nice, warm feeling to the poetry. Altogether, they are a great team for this book.

Beauty, Wonder and Imagination
By Lisa Thoms
This book is awesome and helps to introduce young children to one of the greatest poets of our time, Gwendolyn Brooks. She captures here how a neighborhood is seen through the eyes of a child. There is beauty, there is wonder and there is imagination. It also helps us to explore and think about history. Bronzeville is a historic Chicago neighborhood for a variety of reasons. Then, there is the magic of childhood itself. This is a great resource for all teachers, parents and those who interact with young children!

” into a sweet story similar to the Disney movie Frozen
By Emily Anne K
Thaw: Winter’s Child is the first in a series of fairytale rewrites. E Kaiser Writes twists several fairytales involving snow and ice, including “The Snow Queen” and “The Snow Maiden,” into a sweet story similar to the Disney movie Frozen. Winter’s Child begins with the characters’ births and tells about their childhoods, the discovery of Ilise’s powers, and the consequences of those powers.

I enjoyed reading the story. Each of the characters had their own stories and experiences as they grew into adulthood. Some of the characters made bad decisions, which is a part of growing up. The author delves into the characters’ minds as they live and grow and shows the motivations behind their decisions.

At the end of each chapter, at least in the eBook copy I was given by the author, there are discussion questions. They are introspective and seem to be made for children. I enjoyed the analytical way they made me look at the book. I could see clearly how each character was making good or bad decisions and look ahead at the consequences of them.

I didn't expect this book to be so similar to the movie Frozen. I knew they were based off of the same fairytales, but I thought Winter's Child would be more original. Instead, Winter’s Child has basically the same characters with different names and a slightly different plotline. I enjoyed seeing their motivations, but I had hoped for something more original.

Another problem I had with this book is that there was no real conclusion. There is a little bit of a climax, but it does not end well and there is no recognizable conclusion afterwards.

In all, I enjoyed reading Winter’s Child, but I think the author could have done a much better job with it. I would recommend it to those who enjoyed Frozen and look forward to reading book two.

An Interesting Read
By The Bullers
I started this book sensing a strong “Frozen” vibe(Disney). That continued throughout the book, and I felt likeit had a lot of similar elements to the Frozen movie.

THE GOOD

1. The dynamics of Ilise's relationships with her family were well done. There was a correct amount of tension, but there was still a good undercurrent of love in their relationship.
2. I liked Kai.
3. Ilise held onto herself throughout it all and I felt like even though she had changed greatly, she was still the same base person.
4. The fairytale “feel” of the book. It was very fairytale-y.

THE BAD

1. The Frozen stuff. This book seemed too much like Frozen(Disney movie), and I felt like that greatly weighed down it's potential.
2. The parents did seem a bit indifferent about their daughter at a few points in the book.
3. The Stone King(Frozen, again).
4. Girta(okay, okay, she isn't “BAD”. But she was annoying. I probably liked that. She was real.)
5. This book felt incomplete. I took a look at Thaw: Winter Queen, and it's nearly two hundred pages long. The book after that, Thaw: Prince of Dermargen, was even longer. I felt like, considering the other books' size, the seventy-three pages of Thaw: Winter's Child were lacking. The ending of Thaw: Winter's Child didn't leave me wishing there was more to the series—it left me the other way around. I went, “Oh no, there's more?” not “Yes! There's more!”. I might read the next book, but whether I review it or not depends on my opinion.
6. There was was no story arc. This drove me mad. The story peaked a bit near the middle, but there was no conflict other than emotional. As a writer I was extremely bothered.

FOOTNOTE: This is my opinion. This book was good, but I don't like Frozen, and as a result, I felt that this was a melted version of Frozen.

Two stars.

A creative and sweet fairytale... along the lines of Frozen! :)
By Shantelle H.
Winter’s Child, the first book to the series, Thaw, is a creative retelling of the classic fairytales, Snow Maiden and The Snow Queen. We also see a lot of similarities to Frozen, for anyone who likes that fun movie, :)

I found this book to be interesting and enjoyable, a simple and very “classic fairytale-ish” story. It’s perhaps written in more a style for a younger audience to understand (as it is about two, young sisters), but any age could enjoy it! The Discussion Guide at the end of each chapter definitely seems geared toward younger minds… but I think it would be great to read with younger children and then make them think more in-depth about the story by asking the questions from the Discussion guide. It’s a fun thing to do to ensure you’re not missing/misunderstanding anything.

The beginning of Winter’s Child caught me right into the story… I love how it begins with: “Once upon a time, in a far away land, …” A classic phrase that never gets old! :) (I also appreciated E. Kaiser Writes’s introductions in the beginning of the book. Very informative.) The story became more tense and sad as it went on, and didn’t exactly end on a good note… but that’s what sequels are for! Winter’s Queen ties right in, and I am happy to be continuing the adventure!

There is some magic/mystical creature sort of things. Such as the stone people, and one of the character’s unordinary abilities that she was born with. We also have a winter angel and such like that. But there were important little lessons and subtle allegories of everyday struggles and all woven all throughout the story. The Discussion Guide really helped bring those out.

I like E. Kaiser Writes’s style. It was simple, yet lovely. Details came across beautifully, and the characters had distinct personalities and real-life attitudes. I especially enjoyed running around with little Hess for a while, :) So fun to find all the resemblances to Frozen too, :) And such charming covers!

All in all, it was an intriguing, little story. For anyone who just adores Frozen, I would definitely recommend reading the Thaw series. Also those into fairytales with a classic style… do try out Winter’s Child. I liked it very well, and I think my younger sisters will too! Just make sure you have Winter’s Queen and Prince of Demargen close at hand, :) 
