From School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—In the quiet village of Nnewtown, live the Nnewts, a happy community of amphibians. Herk is a young Nnewt confined to his home's spawning pool because his legs are not strong enough to support his body. When Nnewtown is attacked by the evil Lizzarks, Herk's parents are killed and he is forced to flee. Alone on this journey and pursued by the Lizzarks, he encounters several characters who help him grow and confront the Snake Lord, the villain who replaced his original strong legs with weaker ones while Herk was still an egg. The first volume of a new graphic novel series by the creator of Bad Island (2011) and Cardboard (2012, both Scholastic), this originally appeared online as a web-comic. While Tennapel creates a generally uplifting story, there are several inexplicably strange turns and occurrences. Most notable among these is in Herk's victory over the Snake Lord when the constellation Orion, which the book does establish as a focus of worship for Nnewt culture, suddenly takes an active role in the story's events, deus ex machina-style. There's also a potential tone-deafness toward students with disabilities, presenting Herk's originally weak legs, described at one point as "withered," as an obstacle that must be fixed in order to achieve completeness. Tennapel's cartoonish illustrations are the work's strength, and its intended audience will find them exciting and humorous. It may be best to wait and see how the story progresses in the next installment before adding this to a graphic novel collection.—Ryan F. Paulsen, New Rochelle High School, NY

The beginning of TenNapel's biggest story yet
By Ryan Agadoni
This book has been long anticipated by me. Readers should note that this is only the first in an ongoing series of Nnewts books! This is the first time Doug TenNapel has released a graphic novel with definite plans to continue the story in subsequent books. Since I have often wanted this with some of his other work (Earthboy Jacobus comes to mind), this is great news! TenNapel is very ambitious with his stories and world-building, and if he has any weakness, it is he sometimes doesn't give his big ideas enough room to breathe. With Nnewts, we're going to get to follow our hero for a lot longer than we normally do with a TenNapel story, and that is exciting.

I won't summarize the story for you; you can read that above. This first book sets up the world and character of Herk. We start with him as a kid and his background is set up: his family, his village, his people, his customs, his desires, his weaknesses, and his strengths. This is how to start a grand Myth. Other reviewers have complained about the dark tonal elements, the death. Well, this is often how the hero in a great myth begins: in tragedy. See Star Wars IV. Luke's family is killed by evil forces and he is called to a great adventure, to become the hero and thwart those forces. So it is with Herk. We're just seeing the beginning, the first chapter.

This is, in fact, my only complaint about this book: I want to read the rest of the chapters now! TenNapel creates his work almost entirely on his own (everything but the color-work), so 192 pages of hand-drawn art and story takes a while to produce, so we're going to have to wait awhile before we can see this whole thing. But, think of Bone, and how long it took to get that whole story. I think our patience will be rewarded with Nnewts.

Speaking of the art, it's great. I don't know what the other reviewers were talking about regarding not being able to identify characters. I had no such problems. TenNapel is at his best when he is creating fantasy worlds: houses and villages and weapons and tools and monsters and creatures. This is his wheelhouse. Special recognition should also be given to Catherine Garner's colors, which beautifully enhance TenNapel's line-work.

I've got both the hardcover edition and the Kindle edition. The hardcover is Scholastic's usual quality. Nicely printed on good stock. I still wish for a bigger format, but this is certainly readable and enjoyable. This was my first graphic novel on the Kindle, and it actually works really well. When my kids are old enough to enjoy this it will be nice giving them a Kindle to browse a whole library of comics while on a road trip.

If you're a fan of TenNapel's other work, or of cartoon fantasy, or of newts, you will enjoy this. Highly recommended.

"Interesting (But a Lot of People Die. )" - 8yr Old
By ashertopia
The Nnewt city is beset by evil Lizzarks in an unprovoked attack that devastates the people and leaves young Herk alone and on the run. The problem is that Herk is handicapped by under developed legs. As he struggles to survive he also searches for a way to restore his legs and find his destiny.

At times the story seems disconnected and problems are solved too conveniently and quickly. For instance, Herk has a disability but instead of overcoming it he [SPOILERS] fights the god of the Lizzarks who stole them from him as a child. It's over with a single blow off a rock to the head. How did he get there? At a temple in the ruins of the Nnewt city, where he finds himself after his family is murdered, and guided by an old king who appears and disappears just as quickly. Then he's at a huge city of Nnewts ams is saved by an arrow from a constellation. [END SPOILERS] I know there is a lot left untold at this point as this is only book one but I felt things really moved quickly with very little back story. Hopefully future books clear some of this up.

This is a book written with 8-12 year old kids in mind and I think that's the right age group for reading skill and interest. It may be rough on some to see the content depictions of Herk's parent and siblings killed. As my 8 year old said, "The book is interesting but a lot of people die."

The art is great - something you'd expect since the author created Earthworm Jim - and the story, while abrupt is fun and complex. I recommend it to older - 3rd grade and up - readers.

Exceptional graphics keep the story line energetic
By Miss Barbara
Poor Herk. His once happy life is suddenly torn asunder. His father went hunting and never came back. His village was burned to the ground by Lizzark monsters. His mom is gone. His sister is gone. The eggs he was responsible for tending are, yes, they are gone too.

Herk is a Nnewt who is not yet fully developed. His legs are still spindly weak little things when he finds himself on the run through a land that is frightening, dangerous and filled with many nightmarish creatures. He must traverse dark forests and underground rivers in his quest to be reunited with his family.

The story is told graphically by one of the masters of the genre: Doug TenNapel. With few words the reader follows young Herk on his adventure as he barely avoids one horrible escapade after another. He encounters the Snake Lord, Weretoads, a Turt on a boat and the King of None to name a few of the characters who help or hinder him along the way.

The graphics are exceptionally expressive and meaningful; they keep the story line moving along at a rapid clip. TenNapel's drawings encompass all of the uniqueness and danger that lies in wait for Herk as he maneuvers through the nightmare landscape in search of his family.
