Mermaid Romance for Teens and New Adults
The stunning finale of the California Mermaids series by Kristina Ludwig, author of the best selling Amish Couples, Amish Hearts, and Amish in College books!

Note: This book is part of a series, but can be read independently of the others.

Mermaid Doria bears an unusual family curse: twelve moons after she turns eighteen, she must choose between living on land or in the sea, and remain there—permanently. The only way to break the curse is by finding love with a half-merman, thus uniting the realms of land and ocean forever.

Doria’s beloved Aunt Oceania chose land, and Doria has been dreaming of visiting her ever since she was five years old. Now that she’s finally turned eighteen, she makes the long-awaited trip—to Roaring 20s San Francisco, where her aunt and uncle have become well-known jazz musicians.

Meanwhile, Doria’s mer-beau Dylan loves her more than anything in the world. The problem: she doesn’t feel the same way about him. Dylan worries about Doria in the wild world of speakeasies and ladies’ men, so he follows her to land, trailing her in disguise as she navigates the 1920s social scene.

There, Doria meets and falls for Stanley, a handsome landsman who just happens to be a gossip reporter. As he asks her question after question about her life, Doria worries that he will uncover her secret identity as a mermaid.

Will Dylan be able to win Doria’s heart, or will Doria follow in her aunt’s footsteps and choose a landsman? Can Dylan watch over Doria without blowing his cover? Will Stanley uncover Doria’s secret? And does either of Doria’s love interests hold the power to break the mermaid’s curse?

Good Book, Awful Characters, Terrible Love Relationship
By Anonymous Reviewer
I'm sad to say that I was rather disappointed in this one. The last two books were good, but this one felt like a real step backwards, and I found the reason for that being the characters.

First was my dissatisfaction with Oceania and Xavier. The hero and heroine from the last two books return in a very disappointing wave. The kind and caring couple have been reduce to somewhat obnoxious, irresponsible, party-goers that care more about going out drinking and partying than anything else. They finally meet Doria after all these years, and they take her to an underground drinking bar and pretty much abandon her there while they go and have a good time. Oh sure, they do care about her, but they don't act as very good hosts, or even a very good aunt and uncle. They're even somewhat neglectful parents to their daughter. What happened to the kind-hearted and innocent couple from the last two books. They've been replaced by these rather unlikeable and immature individuals.

Then there's Dylan. I must say that I did not like him at all. He's in love with Doria, but it's on an obsessive stalker level. He knows that it's been Doria's dream for years and years to go to land, yet he does whatever he can to make sure she'll come back and stay in the ocean forever. Even though the decision is hers and hers alone to make, he keeps trying to influence her choice, even going so far as telling her he loves her and planning to ask her to marry him the day she intends to go to land. It's a very selfish and shallow thing to do, and he knows it is and can tell it would upset her, but doesn't care. And when she does go on land, he stalks her under the pretense that he wants to "protect" her from the humans when it's more than obvious that he just doesn't want her to meet any guys. And when she meets Stanley, he is adamant about how the guy can't be trusted. Though he was right, until we find out the truth about him, Dylan's dislike and distrust is completely unjustified. Even when Doria finds him following her, severs all ties with him, and demands he goes back to the ocean, he still uses a magic mirror to spy on her endlessly. He's also incredibly racist to humans. While on land, he meets a girl at a dance club and acknowledges that she's nice and very beautiful, yet he still finds her repulsive for no other reason than she's a human.

Doria, on the other hand, I really adored. She was a great character, and I loved her. But I was gravely disappointed in her relationship with Dylan; I believe I made my feelings for him known above. She and Dylan have been childhood friends for years, and, at most, they've been sweethearts, but never actually became a couple. They've never even kissed once! Even when he tells her that he loves her, it's clear that she doesn't return his feelings for think of him that way. When she discovers him stalking her, she's understandable angry and tells him in no uncertain terms that she wants nothing more to do with him and to leave her alone. Yet at the very end, when he suddenly appears, she's hopelessly in love with him. Her feelings literally just come out of nowhere. He's been a dear friend all her life, then she thinks of him as a smothering stalker jerk who wants to control her decision in life, then suddenly, upon seeing him again, for no reason at all, she's ready to marry him, eternally merge her soul with his, and remain in the sea forever with no hope of ever visiting her aunt or going on land again. It's like, where the hell did that come from? The author pretty much disregarded everything that happened and pretty much decided to make Doria love Dylan simply for the sake of making them a couple. Very disappointing.

So, yeah, while the book was good, the characters and their relationships were the real problem, and they greatly reduced my enjoyment of the book. I really hope to find an improvement in the characters next time, and hopefully Oceania and Xavier won't be such rotten people anymore.

A joy to read
By Jonny
This book by Kristina Ludwig is the 3rd in the California Mermaid series.

The story is very interesting and thought-provoking. It isn't just another story but it has a lot of meaning and actually allows readers to reflect upon. While reading I felt like I was one of the main characters. I was really drawn inside the story.

If you have read the other books in the series then this book is going help put the entire story together.

I recommend reading this 3rd book.

A great series!
By Warrior Princess
What a great ending to the series! I loved the previous mermaid books, and I couldn't wait to get this one. An interesting mix of reality and fantasy, mythology, symbolism and human (human-like?) relationships. I love the refrain of, "I never break a promise." The story is fast-paced and exciting. Very romantic, too. My only complaint? It's the last book of the series...
