A brave young boy with a great imagination believes the cranky fire-breathing dragons living in the woods by his house would not be so grouchy if only they could have a cuddle and a restful nap! Armed with his trusty pup and a wagon full of toasty blankets and hot cocoa he sets off to catch them, calm them, and tame them to sleep! I must admit, upon first read of this book, the text felt disjointed and nonsensical; However, I am so very glad I read this book a second time! “Goodnight, Dragons” is an absolutely fantastic story, and it is truly a different kind of book than so many others out there, thanks to Roth’s writing. Beautifully poetic, flowery and fantastic in all the right places, reading this book is like stepping into a dream. The illustrations by Pascal Lemaitre are gentle and sweet and my daughter smiled from ear to ear the dragon’s expressions morphed from ferocious fire breathers to grouchy grumps to hot chocolate-sipping, thumb-sucking sleepyheads. She thought the dragon tamer boy was brave and fun. An added bonus of this story is that it puts your child in the mood for hot chocolate and a nap!

Some "children's books" are, in fact, works of incredible genius that will speak to anyone, young or old. This book is one of those rare gems. The poetic, adventurous story instantly captivated both my five- and nine-year-old nieces, and the book's simple-on-the-surface-but-actually-quite-amazingly-profound message about the proper way to tame a dragon has touched every adult I've shared this story with, too. I think a copy of this book bundled with a box of hot chocolate mix would be a wonderful gift for anyone, child or adult, who is facing dragons of their own. (PS: My nieces have decided that the book's dragon-taming main character is actually a short-haired little girl.) Five very well-earned stars.

The illustrations are kind of just ok but I don't like them at all and they don't seem to catch ...

I read a lot of books with my kids ( 2 yo boy and 4 yo girl). My son has been into dragons lately so I purchased this book along with a few others.
This book is very poorly written. No rhythm or flow with how it reads. The illustrations are kind of just ok but I don't like them at all and they don't seem to catch the attention of either of my kids.
The physical quality of to book is good but that's it. The content is simply horrible.

Well-illustrated version of the classic "Little Red Riding Hood" with humor/attitude. Loved the use of shadows in this book, especially when the wolf happened onto Grandma's house thinking he'd just lock her in the closet and pretend to be her so he could quick give Red that hug and a kiss only to realize 'What do you know, it's the witch that turned him into a wolf. He [becomes] very angry and hungry and without thinking he swallows her up.' More fun follows with an original, offbeat ending that left me wondering if this author has any similar works in the making. Very good book, I did enjoy!

This is a cool parody of little red riding hood. lmao when I got to the second page. I was sold.
Nice story and awesome illustrations. Looking forward to more stories like this one.

Galjolthr is one of six of the mythical dragons – and everyone wants the glacial creature.

It is almost impossible for humans to see a dragon unless they are destined to do so or have the help of the Drakonicarum. The Drakonicarum is a magical book that tells you how to find, acquire, keep and kill a dragon. It also enlists all the names of the seers and skalds that have had the chance to see its pages.




Through the ages, many countries have searched for the dragon and the book. All kingdoms have sent their fiercest warriors to search for them; and all have failed. All of the warriors have come home deaf, disoriented, empty-handed or not come home at all.




The seers, dragon scholars and skalds can be heard chanting about the mystical creature and that only those with the unwavering heart of a fierce warrior will have the ability to see the Galjolthr.





In Denmark, the Viking Konungr, Ogmundr, is determined to find the Galjolthr at all costs and will kill anyone or anything that gets in his way. In England, King Raphael is destined to the Galjolthr and will protect him at all costs. And the fight is on.




As the years go by, Ogmundr continues to sit and wait as he knows that the glacial dragon is out there and will one day show himself. Ogmundr marries and has a son – Prince Erik. In the meantime, King Raphael lets Galjolthr build up his strength, which was harmed during his fights with the Vikings, as he waits for the right time to become a dragon master. During this time, King Raphael also marries and has a son – Prince Leo.




As the young princes grow older, Ogmundr grows restless. He has had his people following King Raphael for years and he knows that King Raphael has found Galjolthr and had two keys made for the dragons cavern. When a proclamation comes out that there will be a grand party in honor of Prince Leo, Ogmundr gathers his wife and son, Prince Erik, and the three travel to England.





In England, the two princes get along fine and begin wandering the castle with their mothers. During this time, two of Ogmundr’s men search for the keys to the cavern. At the same time, Prince Leo hears the voice of the keys calling to him and when he finds the men searching through the king’s things, he hollers for help. When the king hears this, he tries to get to his son and in the meantime is stabbed.




While the king lies dying, he passes over the kingdom to Prince Leo. And in the passing of the kingdom, King Raphael also passes the responsibility of Galjolthr. Prince Leo will do anything for his father and anything for Galjolthr.




Years after King Raphael has passed, Prince Leo goes to Denmark to avenge his father. However, Ogmundr has passed and left Prince Erik in charge. Prince Leo sees that Prince Erik is a gentle man and together the men vow to protect the Galjolthr. Prince Erik returns the keys to Prince Leo and Prince Leo in return offers one of the keys to Prince Erik.




Along with their children, Prince Leo and Prince Erik go on to rule their lands and take care of Galjolthr.

A perfect fantasy book that everyone should read

Rise of The Ice dragon appeared to be a very pleasant surprise, upon becoming part of my library. A perfect mixture of fantasy and magic, the novel is definitely written for both children and adults who enjoy roaming in the fantasy worlds. Whoever is already a fan of this niche, will certainly enjoy it and want to read more. Whoever is a neophyte in mythological fantasy, might actually be influenced by the book to enter this realm – it can easily become an entrance gate for him.

I enjoyed the fact that it has less parts of pure adventure and more parts of character presentation, giving a historical style of development to the book. Despite the obvious influences of Lord of the Rings, I can even notice some distant echoes of H.P Lovecraft – mainly because the story is evolving around a book called Drakonicarum. I might be mistaking here, but the whole atmosphere reminded me the Necronomicon book, which is widely used as a quest target in Lovecraft’s books. The story, supposedly happening in the real world, (Scandinavian countries) manages to intercept myth and reality, combining dragons and realistic depictions of kingdoms, cultural traditions of that era and other minor details that actually create a very correct approach to remnants of myths and legends of that time.

The story is rather short, making it a great for reading on some rainy evening when one needs an escape towards some different reality. I would even prefer it to be longer, because it managed to catch my attention and fantasy – which is not very easy, especially because there are really a lot of low-quality fantasy writings widely available on the internet. In the Rise of The Ice dragon I managed even to discover multi-layered metaphors and correct symbolic – even the names chosen for the protagonists have very correct sound aesthetics that blend great with the whole story. I consider as very positive the fact that the book is not an endless text about battles and their details, this has become rather cliché and does not offer to a reader’s mind anything more than a stream of battle images. Rise of the Ice Dragon, on the opposite, is developing the whole story and the background of seeing the last dragon, and it is rather interesting to see how the characters evolve. King Leo’s personal story was the most interesting for me to observe as a character.

Moreover, the low price makes it a must-buy addition of one’s kindle book collection. I would be very glad to read a next sequel of the story, or another book of the same style. The experience of devouring the story’s turn was very intriguing and I look forward to read what else this brilliant writer’s mind is capable of producing.
To conclude, I vouch for this book, and I will definitely keep a track what else Dewey Walker will publish.

Very Creative and Original! Fantastic Read for Lovers of Fantasy!

King Leo’s Dragon Masters: Rise of the Ice Dragon is a phenomenal book written by an up and coming author, Dewey Walker. The imagination and creativity within this book is awe-inspiring as it reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit. The language that is spoken by the different kingdoms that are seeking the Drakonicarum, a powerful book that helps people see the last remaining dragon within their realm, is well thought out, especially for the time period in which the novel is set, which, (the mid 800s). This fantasy novel is a great take on the traditional idea of dragons because of the unique power that they held along with the Drakonicarum, while still remaining loyal to some aspects that all dragons should have. The story has a fantastic plot, where the hunt for the mythical dragon Galjolthr, is the primary goal of each kingdom. With the royal lineage enacted within the stories, it helps to keep with the societal norms of that era. This is a fantastic novel that follows a perfect line for the fantasy genre and the originality that is depicted in the storyline is a good enough reason itself to read this fantastic novel!

Not your typical dragon tale

When I first read the book, I thought it’s a bit difficult to understand the story because of all the terms the author used but going through it I found that it really wasn’t as complicated as I thought it was. I actually like to compare it to the movie How to Train Your Dragon since I found the plot suitable for children only that it was narrated in a book rather than a movie. It’s about a king’s journey to discovering his destiny as a Dragon Master. It started out during his father’s reign when he first met the ice dragon and was given the dragon crystal. Years passed then he was born and became king when his father died due to battle and the dragon crystal was taken. This was the only fight scene in the story and I think we can expect more on the next book as the story ended in a battle that’s just about to begin between the ice dragon and the phoenix. I am also looking forward to reading about the king’s training as a Dragon Master, which I’m sure will be action-filled. It’s a book that both adults and kids will surely enjoy.

Lovely & Lyrical~

1 is One is classic Tasha Tudor. The illustrations are of days gone by ~ bonneted girls and a boy writing on a slate; simple, natural settings with some of a whimsical nature (I especially enjoyed the "12 baby birds learning how to sing"). In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the text teaches the numbers 1 through 20 in a rhythmical way. A joy for adult and child alike!

Tasha Tudor's 1 is One teaches children numbers with a lyrical, poem-like text. The illustrations look like they would be perfect for a spring calendar. I would recommend this book to anyone whos children are bored with the semi- mediocre picture books out today.

1 is one duckling swimming in a dish

2 is two sisters making a wish

3 is three swallows up in the sky

4 is four sheep nibbling rye

5 is five eggs in a pretty round nest

6 is six children all dressed in their best

7 is seven apples on a little apple tree

8 is eight daffodills you are picking for me

The book goes on the the number twenty. This is one for the picture book lover in all of us.

A Complicated Story

As the last story in her fairy tales retold collection [1], this story feels like a wrapping of fairy tales so that not one is missed. The story itself is told as a frog prince story, with a twist that it would be uncharitable to reveal. I wrote a frog prince story myself as a fourteen year old and I chose a different twist. In this story, though, the amount of fairy tales retold in its short 70 is somewhat dizzying. There is Jack and Jill, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks & The Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel & Gretel, and I am sorry if I left out any others. With such ambitions, the pace of this story is rapid, and one is jarred by the many fairy tales enough that trying to keep track of the essential core of the story is difficult.

It is, however, a core that is worth keeping a hold of, as it is one that is highly relevant to teen and young adult readers. Two decent young people are pushed towards marriage, and both of them are reluctant about it, even as they have to deal with the machinations of others who try to interfere. Yet, after taking the time to get to know each other, and see each other’s character, they want to marry each other after all. Often, our resistance in life is based out of ignorance, and we struggle to get to know others as they are, so that we may fairly respond to them and not to what they represent because of the behavior of others. This is an immensely worthy point, one that I am frequently reminded of in my own life, and one that would be worthwhile for many others as well. This is a fitting end to the series, at least for now.

If you love your fairy tales, you'll probably like this!

This was a fun story, although I felt that the writing was more elementary than that in most books I read. Even though the title alludes to the retelling of the Frog Prince, this incorporates quite a few favorite fairy tales. I was going to start listing them, but I believe a new reader would enjoy discovering them one by one.

A Powerful Story For a Small Price

A very strong story that is certainly worth the read. From the first page, I became fascinated with the lore of the world while the writing style of the author allowed me to absorb information very comfortably It will leave you with questions yet still feel like a true, satisfying tale. I can easily recommend this to anyone that enjoys reading fictitious tales.

A Beautiful Tale

In a land of darkness, one little girl stands as a ray of light, bringing hope back to the land.

This fairy tale is absolutely beautiful. It draws an emotional response early as one ponders the existence of this beautiful child in a land so full of darkness. I very much regret not having read this earlier. It lingered far too long on my ereader, and it's truly a gem.

As the bringer of light, the little girl's personality is to be expected. She is bright and happy, and she sees everything with the innocence and wonder of the child that she is. The character that shines brighter, though, is the shadow. Different from the other shadows, he is interested in the child, and an unlikely friendship ensues. He is proof that anyone, no matter the mistakes they may have made in their life, can change and become a hero.

This story is written in old fairytale style. There is quite a bit of telling and some passive voice, so some reviewers may stop here and say this isn't good. This is not a story to be over analyzed for the writing style. I only mention it because this story shouldn't be missed. It's underlying themes are quite beautiful, and I feel strongly the author achieved what he meant to. I've read old versions of tales, and they follow this style to the letter. I commend the author for keeping it alive, though it will probably draw some critics.

I can't express enough the amount of emotion in this story. Following the shadow's progress as the world is born anew is a fascinating journey. It is clean and suitable for all ages, though small children may need a more abridged version. The lessons to be learned in these pages are universal, and anyone who enjoys fairy tales should definitely give this one a try.

I enjoyed all five of these cute yet very sensible stories with a moral in each. The author also made you feel as if you were right practically with the use of the right type of words. And the pictures he did have s the very beginning of each new story was well done just right for kids between the ages of 3-10 years of age who would most enjoy them. About the Author
Elinor Lander Horwitz is the author of 14 books for children, young adults, and general audiences and has received several book and journalism awards. Her travel and feature articles on a vast range of subjects appeared for many years in the Washington Post, the Washington Star, The New York Times and a wide range of magazines. Horwitz, who lives in Maryland, has three children and seven grandchildren. Horwitz is the mother of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz and the mother-in-law of journalist and Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks.

A Most Extraordinary Book

My children grew up loving this book and I love sharing it with them. Many evenings were spent reading the imaginative text ("the fern deep grove at the midnight end of the garden" and grass that "feels like the velvet inside a very old violin case")and savoring the exquisite illustrations. Both words and pictures never failed to transport us to a mystical, magical place. The interactive style of writing draws the readers into the story making them integral characters. Every child should have the opportunity to dream and have the fun of choosing (among other things) juggling peaches, pretending to be a helicopter and jumping up and down in the mud. Although my children are now grown, the three of us can still quote lines (actually, we can practically recite the book verbatim). None of us can hear the "Mexican Hat Dance" without thinking of the otter's song. We tresure our copy and look forward to reading it to the next generation and introducing them to the "strange splendid" things that happen when the sky is like lace. Just for insurance (in case anything should happen to our well worn and well loved copy), I purchased a used copy for an outrageous price, but it is worth every penny. How I wish this book would come back into print. I would buy copies for every child I know. Gracious, I have developed a craving for spaghetti with pineapple sauce!

The best childrens' book of all time!!!

So I was ABOUT to pay $132 for an out of print version of this book when I saw it had been reprinted!!! I feel like its Christmas. This was my FAVORITE book as a child. I have an old color photocopy that I have read every day to my 13 months old since he was 6 months old. Its SO battered and falling apart - but he still picks it to have me read to him every time. He LOVES it. If you want for you and your little one to be transported to where everything is strange splendid and plum perfect - GET this book. It is pure magic. I am going to buy copies for everyone I know with kids!

The Most Extraordinary Children's Book

When the Sky is Like Lace by Elinor Lander Horwitz should absolutely be reissued. I can't believe that it is out of print. A friend is having a baby shower and out of the hundred books my two year old loves to hear, this is an absolute favorite. We regularly read him my husband's copy from childhood and I wanted to be able to share this with my friend's child. The story is fabulous, fanciful, rhythmic, and utterly beyond my imagination. The drawings are so deeply rooted to the story that they seem to move as you read along (such as when the trees "eucalyptus" or when the sky is "bimulous"). I am so grateful to my mother-in-law for tucking this book away for all those years. Please please someone reissue this book so more children can relish the fantastic images and situations it creates for us. Much gratitude to the author for her tremendous gift that she shared with us back in 1975 and that I will continue to extend to other children as my son and his friends grow.
