A novel novel

In this modern world of computers and skyscrapers it's always nice to be able to escape into the realm of fantasy. This little sojurn takes the reader to the India of the past where a young Brahmin, Hari, goes out into the world to learn of life only to become a pawn in a game of the Gods. Who shall win? Shall Hari be killed or seduced? Only the Gods know and this will keep you in suspense the whole time.
There are amusing adventures that will make you laugh out loud, but hang on to your seat or you'll be lost in the action. There is no hidden plot and very little hidden meaning, but this is a great little novel just to read for the sheer pleasure of it. Happy reading!

A beautiful adventure in the land of India

The Wlling Spirit is a must read novel for those in love with mythology, India, playful deities and honest but sometimes naive males:-)This first novel of Alfred Tella in collaboration with Piers Anthony was great. Full of details about Indian religions and beliefs, it opened a window to a wonderful world full of colors and smells. The idea of a wager between a horrible demon and beautiful deity is not new, but in this novel it is innovative and fun to read. If you want a fun reading, with colorful characters and places, this is the book to read.

A Hindu Fantasy

THE WILLING SPIRIT by Piers Anthony and Alfred Tella is a very refreshing novel. Written mostly by Tella with only a small involvement by Anthony this is a tale straight out of Hindu mythology. Two spirits, one female and pulchritudinous and the other male, crude and violent, form a wager as to the effectiveness of their methods. They will each have seven chances to cause a chosen mortal's seduction or destruction. The target is a young Brahmin who has decided to take a journey of discovery.
During the Brahmin's travels he becomes involved with nobles, the Rajah, powerful religious figures and many other interesting and colorful people. Needless to say he is still alive at the end when he returns to his home village.
I do not pretend to be an expert on Hindu mythology and beliefs but the story seemed consistent and well researched. The only flaw I found involved a pair of conjoined twins who were not identical (while possibly lifted from some Hindu tale it is scientifically impossible). With the usual assortment of Arthurian and Medieval European fantasies stocking the shelves THE WILLING SPIRIT bings the same fresh approach that BRIDGE OF BIRDS did last decade. While I hope I don't have to wait another decade for something similar, this one is well worth seeking out.

Did anyone proofread this in even a cursory way? It's absolutely full of errors. My eighth grader's found about seven in the first six pages she's worked on, and these aren't just typos in the text. They're actual errors, so that you can't select the right answer or the right answer isn't there (or --and this one really made us laugh -- it's there twice). We're double checking everything, then returning this. Ridiculous.

Hate it

We have been using the previous version of Spectrum to prepare for the end of the year testing for our homeschool year. I have always been very happy with them, so when I saw this newer version I thought it would be just as good. Boy was I wrong, this is nothing like the others. I do not have experience with common core, but for what I have heard this seems to be right in line with those standards. I have tried several pages in this book because I did not want to go through the proccess of return, but I am really regretting it. I wish I would have gotten the older version. If you are a homeschooler, you will most likely find no value in this book. We take the Iowa or the Standford tests each year. This book will be no help for that. It is not set up like a test like the other book is. This is set up more like a tutoring session giving strategies and testing tips, which you would think would be helpful, but it is useless.

Disappointed that they changed the new version in the ways ...

I agree with the other reviewer. This seems aligned with the Common Core, which our state has NOT adopted thankfully. We use the Iowa testing as homeschoolers and I don't feel this revised edition will work for us. I just ordered the older version to use with my first grader. I am a college graduate and I had trouble determining correct answers without looking at the answer key. The write-in questions are especially nebulous and confusing. Disappointed that they changed the new version in the ways they did. I have use the older version with my older child for years happily. I do NOT recommend this revised version at all.

Great, but some flaws.

This book is an excellent book, I loved reading it, but there were a few flaws. 1) They used the wrong name, his name is Stampylongnose. 2) Some wrong punctuation. 3) Some wrong grammar. Please fix the mistakes and I will change my rating to 5 stars.

Absolutely loved this book. the whole idea of a person with powers to protect trees is amazing. I loved how the story unfolds. Lina and Brad are awesome together. This is the first book I've read by this author and I'd love to read more.

Magical and suspenseful read!

Really pulled at my heartstrings. Lina is a talent woman who feels trapped by her powers. She meets Brad, and they embark on a magical adventure full of suspense which had me wondering how it would end - and hoping they would succeed! Really enjoyed the interaction with the trees. Vicki writes wonderful stories, I look forward to reading more of her work.

A great book for teaching differences

Children start noticing differences among themselves at a very early age, and so I greatly appreciated reading this book. The books that I've read about diversity or varying abilities have often othered their subjects in a not so helpful way. Cari Best has produced a very useful and fun teaching tool with this book. Zulay is not only a racial minority, but she is also a blind student in a class of seeing students. This makes her an incredibly marginalized character. This is important to understand because when talking about disabilities, the narratives of children of color are often kept in the shadows. I've never seen this type of children's book before. I found the content to be very useful in capturing the complex experience of a child with a disability in a school where the majority of students are able bodied. The story was slightly idealistic as Zulay has a strong group of friends, goes to a school where there are professional staff with the skills to teach blind students, and she doesn't face bullying. Those narratives are common among students with different abilities. This idealistic story lines seems as though it's due to the fact that Zulay attends a seemly wealthy private school that can accommodate her needs. She has kind, racially diverse friends who accept her. She has great teachers that motivate and support her. Her story would most definitely have differed if her character went to a school with less economic resources. But what I found important was that her character struggles with accepting her own status as being labeled as "disabled". She can't accept being othered and made different by her teachers and her peers. It's also highlighted that she has different strengths in comparison to the other students: She's strong at math and writing, while she struggles at drawing shapes. I found that important because like anyone, people have strengths and weaknesses, but they shouldn't be defined by them. Zulay is still as bright as her classmates even though she struggles at capturing visual practicum. Best brought the book to a great conclusion with Zulay finally finding her own strength and confidence as she runs the race she dreams of. I appreciated the language that Best uses. The language captures has children speak about themselves, their, peers, and adults. It is also very poet at times. The illustrations by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, beautifully capture the playfulness of the written word.

An exuberant story of inclusion

Summary: Zulay enjoys first grade with her three best friends. Even though she’s blind, she can do almost everything the other kids do. She doesn’t like it when she has to leave the class to work with Ms. Turner, who helps her learn to use a cane. But she does like writing on her Braille typewriter, learning math with manipulatives, and singing and dancing on the playground with Maya, Nancy, and Chyng. When the teacher announces an upcoming field day, Zulay is as enthusiastic as her classmates, and decides she wants to run a race. The class is silent when she makes that announcement, but Ms. Turner is confident Zulay can do it and works with her every day to get her ready. When the big day comes, Zulay runs around the track with Ms. Turner and joyfully breaks through the ribbon at the finish line. Ages 4-9

Pros: Readers will be interested to see how this exuberant girl participates in everything that interests her even though she can’t see. The author wrote this story after seeing a visually impaired girl thriving in a first-grade classroom at a New York City public school.

Exactly for us - quality reading time with my 4-year-old

Love the concept of this book. My daughter feels special because it is "just for" her age! The stories are classic fairy tales and poems, and I look forward to reading this to her several times a week. Also, the book is very well made. I can't wait to buy the one for when she turns 5!

A great book for little ones with many stories and colorful illustrations

I have a 4 year old so I bought this Collection Of Stories for 4 year old's and it is perfect for her age group! The stories that are included are; The Ugly Duckling, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess and the Pea, The Little Red Hen, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Elves and The Shoemaker, The Big Ship Sails, Five Little Speckled Frogs, Sing a Song of Sixpence, There was a Crooked Man, Eeny, Meeny, and Old Mother Hubbard. Each story is colorful illustrated to keep little ones attention. I love how all of these stories are included in one book because it means there are not many books laying around to get lost.

I recommend this story book to anyone who has little ones, not just 4 year old's. It is a great book that has many stories in one book.

Took a chance on this book and it was definitely worth it!

Bought this book for my daughter about 3 days ago. Daughter is 11 and definitely likes to read. However, she is pretty darn picky and is known to give up on a book if it doesn't have her interest early on. She finished "Twinkie Pie" in under 3 days and had nothing but positive things to say about it. She said it was suspenseful, held her attention throughout and she even liked the recipes that were included and wants to make one this week. She also said, "dad, it has a serious plot twist that I can't tell you about." Sounds like a good choice for your teen reader.

Perfect Recipe for Middle Grade Readers

Twelve-year-old GiGi and her older sister DiDi leave their trailer park in South Carolina and move New York after DiDi wins a million dollars in a cooking contest. Life doesn't go from cinder and ashes to glass slippers and ball gowns however. DiDi is set on GiGi using that big, beautiful brain of her to make something of herself. DiDi and GiGi live above a ritz salon where DiDi does the hair of rich ladies while GiGi walks to one of the best schools in town. Little does DiDi realize that GiGi has worked out her very own recipe...a recipe for success...that includes making friends and having fun a lot more than studying and making A+ grades all the time. On GiGi's first day at school she meets a boy that just might be a dream come true with his Wish Pie eyes and floppy hair and willingness to listen to a girl from South Carolina with quite a few shocking stories to tell and even more shocking secrets to discover. GiGi and DiDi's new life will have more ups and downs than lumpy brownies, but if they remember what's important, who's important, they may just find the perfect recipe for family and true happiness. Kat Yeh did a wonderful job writing a novel that unfolds like a flower but is chock full of fun recipes and new ideas about what really makes a family. This is a perfect middle grades novel.

Irrisistabley delicious!

GiGi Barnes never knew her mama. All she has are the recipes mama kept and her sister DidDi makes to keep Mama's memory alive. GiGi was raised by DiDi. After winning a lottery, they move from a quiet town in North Carolina to a ritzy town in NY so GiGi can get a great education. This is the "Recipe for Success" they planned. At first GiGi hates leaving the only home she's ever known. As she begins to make friends, she breaks away from DiDi's tight hold and forges her own success plan. Soon she begins to learn more about herself and the mama she never knew.
This is a delightful and heartwarming story of love, loss, sacrifice, and what it means to be a family. GiGi's voice is pitch perfect 'tween, as are those of her classmates. The easy to follow recipes at the end of most chapters are a charming and unique addition. They bring out "mama's character in a way straightforward prose wouldn't. This is a book middle grade kids will enjoy. Try the impossible coconut pie...impossibly delicious!

Unhappy daughter = unhappy mom

I got this for my daughter, we ordered all Spectrum books in January but this is the only one we had issues with. We had to use other books as well as the internet to answer a majority of questions since it doesn't go into great detail. I would have purchased a different book had I known this beforehand, she got frustrated because she was unable to find the answers in the book and had to look in different places to answer a somewhat easy question.

I love all the Spectrum books

I thought there would be more info in here that I could use.. but really it's just an overview of world geography... I won't be using it... I love all the Spectrum books, but I think you can just find more online than use this for 6th grade geography... Not what I was looking for.

This is a great product to use as a supplement to public school or we used this when we decided to home school our daughter. When she did go back to public school the next year she was on the same level and in some place higher than other kids within the grade level.

Abbreviated version of the big book of things that go, about 3"x5"

Got this book because my little one loved Richard Scary's Big Book of Things That Go. Thought this one would be neat because it was just cars and trucks. It is neat, but it is tiny, pocket-sized, would fit in your purse. Didn't catch that in the description. It has turned out to be a nice, hearty car book though, so I would rate it good for that purpose. Also, if you are looking for a toddler-proof board book intro to Richard Scary, this is good for that too. If your little one can handle regular pages and regular sized books though, then just get the big book.

Delightful and durable Richard Scarry board book

My mother-in-law bought this book for my one-year old, and he absolutely loves it. He grabs the book and points to all the different trucks. It's definitely helping him expand his transportation vocabulary! It's nice to have a Richard Scarry board book too that your toddler can't rip apart.

Great little book

Nice size for a toddler to manipulate, easy to throw into a diaper bag, sturdy, bright pictures and lots to look at without being too busy. I loved the big Richard Scarry books when I was little but my son is at that "can I rip this out of here" stage so we have to stick with board books right now and I was so happy to find out that there were some that will introduce my little guy to the bigger books! I look forward to our next purchase for sure!

`I must be careful and think before I act rather than rely solely on luck'

Author Efrat Haddi, with excellent support from illustrator Abira Das, has written a fine little story about the value of being careful, and the clever way she tells the story makes it remarkable and memorable for children. Efrat Haddi obviously understands children (she is a mother of 3!) as well as the techniques of teaching children concepts through stories. This is a very well written and illustrated book that should become a favorite bedtime story - with a lesson.

We again meet Troy the monkey and Tanya his mother as we met in LUCKY MONKEY 1 and we are reminded that Troy is mischievous yet never got hurt. He plays with a leaf as a parachute as the wind comes up, as the master of a log boat when the rain raises the river, plays with a crab who narrowly misses his nose with its pinchers, left banana peels on the ground drawing the wrath of a lion but climbs a tree to safety. Despite his mother's warnings Troy keeps doing mischief until he runs into a series of bad luck episodes and his mother's advice suddenly sounds reasonable. From then on Toy is careful before he acts.

As with all of Efrat Haddi's books the beautifully illustrated stories care a fine lesson - and she delivers it in such an entertaining way that children will pay attention. Grady Harp, January 15

Very useful if you have a 5 year old boy who ...

Very useful if you have a 5 year old boy who doesn't think before he acts...like shooting himself in the eye with his toy gun!! Now I tell him "remember the Lucky Monkey"..and he gets it!
