The Celtic Twilight, by W. B. Yeats

I have desired, like every artist, to create a little world out of the

beautiful, pleasant, and significant things of this marred and clumsy

world, and to show in a vision something of the face of Ireland to any

of my own people who would look where I bid them. I have therefore

written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen,

and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined.

I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those

of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and

faeries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine.

The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull

them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can

weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best. I too

have woven my garment like another, but I shall try to keep warm in it,

and shall be well content if it do not unbecome me.

Hope and Memory have one daughter and her name is Art, and she has

built her dwelling far from the desperate field where men hang out

their garments upon forked boughs to be banners of battle. O beloved

daughter of Hope and Memory, be with me for a little.

An Excellent Guide to Understanding Yeats' Early Poetry
By Daniel Myers
When Robert Frost (A not very likable fellow, when you read his biographies, despite his excellent poetry.) visited Yeats in Ireland, he made a comment to the effect that, "It's no wonder he believes in faeries." He was responding to the beautiful, mystical Irish landscape Yeats grew up in. This book, even though you're (probably) not in Ireland when you read it, will have you responding much as Frost did. The peasantry have so much of their pagan ancestry in their blood that, despite their ostensible Catholicism, their deep belief in "the little people" comes out as strong as ever when questioned about it. Reading these anecdotes, some of them grafted directly onto Yeats' early poetry, gives them a power they would not have had you not read this book and realized how "here and now" faeryland was to the common people at the time. The Celtic belief that death (into Faeryland)is far more desirable than birth is made beautifully apparent in this book. Hence, by the way, the celebratory Irish wake. Hence also this lovely poem
Heardst thou not sweet words among That Heaven-resounding minstrelsy? Heardst thou not that those who die Awake in a world of ecstacy? That love, when limbs are interwoven, And sleep when the night of life is cloven, And thought, to the world's dim boudaries clinging, And music, when one beloved is singing, Is death?
These sorts of things, as well as Yeats' poetry, are worth deep consideration in this present world where medicine is deemed omnipotent...and yet, nevertheless, we all die.

Faerie Folklore of a Shadowy Ireland of Celtic Mysteries !
By Michael Chesbro
In Celtic Twilight, originally published in 1902, Yeats recites several accounts of encounters with the faerie folk and with the people of Ireland of the time which gives us insight into Irish folklore, myth and legend.

Yeats associates poetry with religious ideas and sentiment. And, I believe that he saw himself as writing for Ireland, but a shadowy Ireland of Celtic mysteries and legends, not the Ireland of the modern day. By modern day, of course, I relate this to the modern day of Yeats in the late 1890s and early 1900s.

In the introduction to Celtic Twilight Yeats states; "I have therefore written down accurately and candidly much that I have heard and seen, and, except by way of commentary, nothing that I have merely imagined. I have, however, been at no pains to separate my own beliefs from those of the peasantry, but have rather let my men and women, dhouls and faeries, go their way unoffended or defended by any argument of mine."

I got the strong impression from reading Celtic Twilight that Yeats actually believed in the existence of the faeries. Not just as some myth or legend, but as actual beings that exist in this world, though perhaps unseen by the common man. He wrote each story as if it was something that actually happened, having been related to him by the storyteller, or perhaps that which he had seen for himself in some past time, now recalled as he set pen to paper.

There is a depth to Yeats' writing that lies just below the surface, something that's perceived more than seen. The idea that perhaps magic and the faerie folk are alive in the world of today, but unseen, or perhaps only seen from time to time as a fleeting shadow until one knows just where to look.

It is interesting to note that Yeats was heavily involved in occult studies and practices as part of the Madame Helene Blavatsky's,Theosophical Society and later, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and finally in 1912 the Ordo Templi Orientis.

This would have certainly influenced his outlook on life and his belief in, and dare we say ability to see the unseen things of this world.

I too ask myself from time to time; just what unseen things exist in this world. Perhaps Yeats has seen that which other men can only hope for, or that which they turn away from in dread given the course of their spirits.

Yeats also makes a profound observation: "The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pull them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best."

I found Yeats' observation of particular interest, especially when it comes to theological or philosophical thought. If it is those things that we hear and see in life that forms the fabric of our beliefs, then surely we must take care that that which we see and hear forms strong enough threads so that the fabric we weave is not shoddy.

Yeats' works help us build those strong threads in our lives. For, he certainly influenced the world at large with his writings. In 1923 Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, and in 1934 he shared the Gothenburg Prize for Poetry with Rudyard Kipling.

A wonderful addition to my kindle; I can read bits and pieces of it throughout the week and the beauty and lyricism follow me. If you're into Celtic lit, Irish stories/poems, fairy stories, it's all here. Not new age stuff, but the tried and true classics by a master poet.

Math sections contain mistakes!
By Boston MA
We purchased this to give our third grader a heads-up for the upcoming test in school. The ELA sections of the book seem fine, but the Math section contains mistakes, several of them in fact. The provided keys are confusing and 2 contained confusing errors in actual explanations. In all, the whole math section is awful, filled with testing on terms and definitions that mean little for a 9-year old, like "model a concept of sharing in division", or "explain how you can use a principle of partitioning or grouping", or "illustrate to show a concept of multiplication". Word problems are wordy and ill-composed for simple operation problems of addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. If you look for a good preparatory material, at least consider the one with no errors in it.

This book is horrible, It was full of errors and it did ...
By Daniel Walters
This book is horrible, It was full of errors and it did nothing to prepare my child, the reason it did not help my child is because I refuse to let my child take the tests linked to this curriculum. All common core does and the New York State high stakes tests does is dumb our kids down to the lowest level. This book and common core is a money machine. Third graders should not be taking tests and more tests that do nothing to further their education. Do not purchase this crap book.

About the Author
Having grown up in the 1970s L.R. Manley was an avid reader of the heroes of mythos and fairy tale. He joined the British police in 2004 and was on duty on July 7th 2005 in central London, just after the terrorist attacks. Frustrated by the impotence of policing in the UK he resigned in 2008 and travelled for 3 years. Taking in Greece, India, Moldova, Italy, the USA, and Mexico before returning to the UK. Now living in Royal Leamington Spa, Lance wrote "The Catastrophe of the Emerald Queen" as a homage to the fantasy tales he loved as a child. Inspired by many people and events in Lance's life, this is the first of a planned series of "The Tales of Alegria".

A Brilliant Read; Perfect for
By Morris Avel
Not gonna lie; my expectations for the book were not super high. From the cover design (and the fact that the author hasn't previously published any fiction) I assumed that this would be a relatively pedestrian (albeit interesting)fantasy novel.

I was definitely surprised, and in the best possible way.

The plot is great, and pretty much anyone will find a character that they relate to somewhere within the novel. Far from rehashing tired fantasy tropes, this book is sort of a mish-mash of "Deathwish" and "Chronicles of Narnia" with a Charles Bronson-ish character stealing the show. Lance is able to bring an entire universe to life, immersing the reader in a life or death struggle that will have them on the edge of their seats the entire journey.

Some observations:
1) Definitely not for young children, but has a strong moral compass that would appeal to kids from 12-16 and older.
2) The dialogue is somewhat stilted, but the characters are all unique and they each speak with a distinct voice.
3) There needs to be a sequel. There has to be a sequel.

I would recommend that anyone interested in fantasy, or anyone who loves to read a good revenge story / action novel, read this freshman attempt by Lance Manley. You won't come away disappointed.

Beyond what I expected. Wonderful.
By Jack "Sweeney" Carter
While having certain aspects of fantasy tropes about it (orphans, magic, an alternate world) Lance Manley's great feat here is making this different. Magic is limited and used sparingly. Cunning and luck see our heroes through.

The moral of the book is that violence can change us, and shows that while we may think we know ourselves, being angry can make us act against our natures.

There are some WONDERFUL characters in here. King James is quite possibly the most magnificent baddy you will EVER meet while the hero Mordalayn is a poster boy for righteous rage.

I loved this book and would reccomend it to anyone who loves a good fantasy novel. The story is original and the characters unique (I actually spat coffee out laughing at the bit where hormonal fairy Kloee berated an injured man for falling on top of her...as she was too annoyed to realise that it was an accident and the man was horribly hurt).

Mordalayn is a new hero. Complex and violent yet sensitive and compassionate. I predict a cult following for this character.

Sublime. Check it out.

(Final point. NOT for little kids, but ages 11+ will love it).

Revealed: A House of Night Novel (House of Night Novels), by P. C. Cast, Kristin Cast

Revealed is the spellbinding eleventh and penultimate installment in the #1 New York Times bestselling vampyre series by PC and Kristin Cast.

Drastically altered after her fall at the end of Hidden, Neferet is now more dangerous than ever―and her quest for vengeance will wreak havoc on humans, as well as Zoey and her friends. Chaos is loosed in Tulsa and the House of Night is blamed. Can Zoey stop Neferet in time to keep her anger from escalating to full-on war? Or will someone else have to step in to take the fall?

The House of Night series is an international phenomenon, reaching #1 on U.S., German, and UK bestseller lists, and remaining a fixture on The New York Times Children's Series bestseller list for nearly 150 weeks and counting. With more than 12 million copies in print, rights sold in thirty–eight countries to date, and relatable, addictive characters, this series is unstoppable. Now, in the eleventh and penultimate installment of the series, the action is more intense and the stakes even higher as Zoey and her friends battle to protect their school and home from devastating evil―all while balancing romances, precarious friendships and the daily drama of the House of Night's halls.

From Booklist
The situation at the Tulsa branch of the vampyre academy House of Night appears to be unraveling: a human is murdered on school grounds; the sudden death of a fledgling vampyre sparks violence within the student body; Old Magic may be corrupting a high-priestess-in-training; and a malevolent former priestess is getting ready to make a serious comeback. Being the eleventh and penultimate book in the House of Night series, this requires serious backstory knowledge to understand the characters, their alliances, and the significance of their actions. For series fans, this is more of the same, and other than a few episodes of physical violence and what seems like a gratuitous lesbian kiss near the end, not much happens to advance the plot or character development. No worries, though—some teens will love the vamp connection, the steamy love scenes, and the pop-culture feel of this almost-final chapter. Grades 8-11. --Cindy Welch

Big Disappointment
By aebeatty08
I was so excited for this book to come out. I have waited over a year for Revealed and I must say, that was a big waste of my time. I loved this series in the beginning and now it is just dragging on. It hard for me to grasp that some of these books are only taking a couple of days for all these events to happen. I feel like nothing really happened in this book. Yeah Zoey does something wrong and is freaking out about boys. I understand that she is supposed to only be 17, but seriously? She has bigger problems than boys, say a crazy immortal that wants her dead?

I really hope the next book is the last one. I don't even really want to read the next one, but I want to finish this series. Usually when a series ends, I am so disappointmented because I want more of the story. Not with this series anymore. I just want it to hurry up and end.

I just feel like there could've been more to happen in this book or have more problems been fixed. We didn't even get to hear from Erik at all and it seemed Damien was prefectly happy. I'm sorry, but didn't his love interest JUST die like maybe a week ago from the story line? I feel like I might just be ranting on this story, but it was NOWHERE near as good as it could be considering it took a full year to get published. I think I will just stick with my indie writers for now because this book was seriously crap compared to what the Casts have put out in the past.

Almost nothing happened, it was so slow!
By BlueDevil
I can't recall which book exactly was the one that finally made me lose my patience with this series and it's mindnumbing droning on and on about irrelevant things. But this last one here definitely was one of the most boring books I have ever read, so disappointed.

I loved the series at first, and still love the world and most of its characters and setting, etc. But when the books started to change point of view, they really went downhill. This book is told from so many points of view it was exasperating. And almost ALL of the Neferet stuff was really, really.....really tedious. Nothing new here.

WHAT was the big reveal? In MY opinion, I can't spoil it, but two girls discovered romantic feelings with each other with a kiss. And even that wasn't so interesting or surprising. I can't say more without spoiling it. You go girls, but when this was about the only thing NEW in the whole book, that's a bad sign. And one more thing that is VERY MUCH starting to get on my nerves is the way the fledglings speak. Their profanity and slang just get old and most of it is stupid, it makes me miss Zoey's "bullpoopies" when I read some of the things Aphrodite and others say in this book. Who talks this way? I prefer plain profanity than this STUPID talk.

I like this series as a whole, I do. But somewhere it jumped the shark BADLY. This series is NOT going to be a timeless one like the Harry Potter series and other series will, because it dates itself with stupid and unnecessary pop culture references and slang expressions that I have never heard anyone in my life say ever. It's so juvenile and it's distracting and annoying. Not well done, Casts.

I'm plodding on just to complete the series but I swear, this series should have cut a LOT, a LOT LOT LOT of filler out, and been no more than 5-6 books!

And again, nothing much happened in this book! Ok this is what I feel happened in 300+ pages: 2 female characters share a kiss and realize they have feelings for each other and/or girls. Ok. And a character is assassinated. Ok. And Zoey does something that makes me want to say, Oh No, not Hoey again, poor Stark. That's it, what was the big reveal??? I can't even imagine WHAT is SUPPOSED to happen in the LAST (thank Nxy!) book. If it's like this one we can save our trouble. Lots LOTS of filler and stupid talk, and Neferet gets defeated. And sadly this is probably 12 books that will equal to just about 3 months of "real" time for the fledglings!

this series is starting to drag on.
By Amazon Customer
When I started the House of Night books around four years ago, I loved it. Zoe was a strong lead that I could connect with. Sadly as the books have carried on she has become a whiney, annoying Mary Sue who is more interested in how many boys she can sleep with or flirt with or obsess over than standing up for what she believes in. Then there is the fact that perrhaps if she spent less time acting like a complete whore, and more time paying attention to her surroundings she wouldn't continually be blind sided by the 'big bad'. The fact that each of the eleven books only covers between a day to a week in Zoe's world is also becoming tiresome, I'm finding it hard to continue to be interested in this world because it is moving too slowly and not covering enough ground. I will finish the series out, because that is what I do, however I won't buy anymore of the books until they are all published.

Looking for something different? Read 2513 now!
By txrose02
2513 is a different read than most books because you don't see to many stories about the Grim Reaper and his helpers. It was a refreshing change from the romance, serial killers, supernatural genres that everyone seems to want to write about. The author does a great job in giving depth to the story and characters. It was entertaining and makes you think that it would be interesting if we could really swap lives like the main character was able to. I really enjoyed the back and forth between the reaper and priest/vampire and some of their conservations made me chuckle loud enough that my mom asked what was so funny. The only part I got lost on was when Matthew decided his first life and I didn't realize what he had chose until a couple of pages into the chapter. Overall 2513 is a definite read and one that I'll read again! I even got my mom interested and she plans on buying the book since mine is on Kindle. Can't wait for the sequel!!

As well as humorous this is a thought-provoking read
By Shari Sakurai
*I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review*

2513 is a unique story that depicts dying and the process of collecting souls as a business and Grim Reapers as employees of the corporation. Due to an error, Matthew Anderson is alive and shouldn’t be. Instead of dying he is offered the chance to choose a different life for himself.

Much of the novel is about Matthew’s choices and the situations that he finds himself in following on from those choices. The banter between the three main characters had me laughing in several places, but as well as humorous this is a thought-provoking read. The end was left somewhat open for a follow up which I’d love to read too.

Overall this was a good, fun read which I enjoyed immensely.

When Harry Colebourn saw a baby bear for sale at the train station, he knew he could care for it. Harry was a veterinarian. But he was also a soldier in training for World War I.
Harry named the bear Winnie, short for Winnipeg, his company's home town, and he brought her along to the training camp in England. Winnie followed Harry everywhere and slept under his cot every night. Before long, she became the regiment's much-loved mascot.
But who could care for the bear when Harry had to go to the battleground in France? Harry found just the right place for Winnie while he was away―the London Zoo. There a little boy named Christopher Robin came along and played with Winnie―he could care for this bear too!
Sally Walker's heartwarming story, paired with Jonathan Voss's evocative illustrations, brings to life the story of the real bear who inspired Winnie the Pooh.

From School Library Journal
Gr 1–2—Readers will be captivated by this picture book account of the bear who inspired the "Winnie-the-Pooh" series. Walker tells the story of Harry Colebourn, a World War I soldier who came upon a man selling a baby bear at a train station (he had shot the cub's mother) and decided to adopt the animal. A veterinarian, Colebourn quickly became attached to the little bear he named Winnie (short for Winnipeg, Manitoba, Colebourn's company's hometown), who accompanied the soldier to a training camp in Quebec and became a favorite of the entire regiment. Winnie even went with the company to England when more soldiers were needed across the Atlantic. When Colebourn was sent into battle, he took Winnie to the London Zoo, where she was so gentle and tame that zookeepers sometimes let children ride on her back. There, Milne's young son, Christopher Robin, met her and fell in love, motivating Milne to pen the "Winnie-the-Pooh" books. Sweet, realistic illustrations, rendered in watercolor with pen and ink, lend the work an old-fashioned air, while a simple but gentle narrative provides readers with a sense of the emotional connection between Winnie and Colebourn. Back matter offers brief material on Colebourn, Winnie, black bears in general, and Milne's writings, as well as photographs of Winnie and Christopher Robin. Children will enjoy this interesting insight into the real story behind a beloved bear they already know so well.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

As a substitute teacher, I carry the book in my school bog to read to students when there is "gap" time. The first time I read it was to 2nd graders. When I finished reading, I asked them if they liked it. All nodded but one shook her head and said, "I didn't like it: I loved it!" Third graders, 1st grade students, even fifth graders were delighted. High praise.
Great way to tie fiction and non-fiction together and throw in some geography and history, too.

Silly old bear
By E. R. Bird
I worked in close proximity to the real Winnie-the-Pooh for five years. From 2006 to 2011 he was a daily delight. To clarify, I was working alongside the original Winnie-the-Pooh toys owned by the real Christopher Robin, son of A.A. Milne in New York Public Library's Central Children's Room. We had Piglet, Tigger, Kanga (no Roo), Eeyore, and Winnie himself. Though ironically I never read his books as a child, in my time as a children’s librarian working in the Children’s Center at 42nd Street I became well versed in his story. Winnie was purchased at Harrods for Christopher Robin who eventually named him “Winnie” after some bear he’d seen in a zoo. If pressed to conjure up facts about that zoo bear I might have been able to tell you that its name was Winnipeg, but that was about as far as my knowledge on the matter went. Sometimes it takes a children’s book to learn about a children’s book character. “Winnie: The True Story of the Bear That Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh” relates the true history of a man and his bear. Illustrated with aplomb by Jonathan D. Voss, the book’s charm is the true measure by which you can assess how well it lives up to its namesake. Accuracy and adorableness in one small, furry package.

There are many things Harry Colebourn could have purchased as his troop passed through the small train station, but what did he end up with? A baby bear. A baby black bear, if you want to be precise about it. Good natured and orphaned, Harry promptly names her “Winnie” after his company’s hometown “Winnipeg” and she becomes the darling of his troop. When WWI calls his company across the wide ocean, Winnie comes along. But killing fields are no place for a baby bear so it’s to the London Zoo that Winnie goes. Once there, Harry promises her that when the war is done he’ll take her back to Winnipeg. It’s a promise he doesn’t keep. Upon his return Harry sees that Winnie is not only happy but a star of the zoo. She’s so gentle that children everywhere come to see her. Even a boy by the name of Christopher Robin . . . Copious photographs of the real Winnie and Harry grace the front endpapers while Christopher Robin graces the back. There is an additional Author's Note on Harry, Winnie, and black bears as well as a Bibliography of sources.

As I began reading the book I wondered if the story of Winnie would be akin to other military animal tales out there. Would Winnie aid the Allies much in the same way as Voytek in Poland or was she more of a mascot like Stubby? Neither, as it happens. Though Winnie did make it onto a boat headed for France, her keeper was smart enough to recognize that while some bears would thrive in a war zone (see: Voytek), Winnie was not one of them. Really she was just a baby and after seeing her playing and cuddling with Harry the thought of her existing in a place where bullets would fly is terrifying. This is a sweet wartime tale, perfect for reading to younger children who take things on face value and aren’t aware of what WWI really entailed.

The art of Jonathan D. Voss caught me by surprise. With just a half glance at the cover I initially though the illustrator was Amy June Bates (who illustrated the somewhat similar “Christian the Hugging Lion” back in 2010). An understandable mistake but once I actually went so far as to, oh I dunno LOOK at the book, I could see that Voss has a crisper line as well as a sure and steady grasp on the material. This being the first picture book that he has illustrated, he does a good job of making some really iconic images. The view on the cover of Harry hugging Winnie to his chest, as one might cuddle an infant, is downright heartwarming. Likewise the image of Winnie asleep under Harry’s cot as his long arm drapes down, his wrist bending in sleep, works. And if the four shots of Harry playing with Winnie were a YouTube video they’d get more hits than any other cute animal video to date. There is the occasional misstep, I’m afraid. A boy riding Winnie later in the book bears the slack-jawed look of a very small grown man and not a little boy. Indeed Voss appears to be most comfortable when Winnie is his focus. There’s not a single image where that bear doesn’t feel 100% authentic. One suspects the artist spent a great deal of time studying baby black bears and how they move. He also does a decent job of rendering the stuffed Pooh accurately. The arms are admittedly a bit long but the stance and nose are on target.

One objection I’ve heard to the story is that there isn’t enough Christopher Robin / real Winnie-the-Pooh info included in this story. I can see where this critic is coming from but I respectfully disagree. To my mind, Winnie’s story is fascinating in and of itself regardless of what famous literary character she ended up inspiring on some level. Hers is a story of tragedy turned to great good luck. Few orphaned bears in the WWI era would have found such a caring owner, let alone one that let them travel to Europe. Her life was notable at the time and makes for no less an interesting story today.

For my part, the book gets into tricky territory when we view the quoted dialog. Now Ms. Walker is a known entity. She does this stuff for a living. Wins big nonfiction awards like the Sibert for “Secrets of a Civil War Submarine” and the like. So when we get to a section where Harry is quoted saying “I’ll feed her condensed milk. She can stay with me in camp. Winnipeg can be our mascot,” then we have to naturally assume that the quote comes from one of the listed sources Walker provides at the back of the book. The quotes are not sourced but since Harry’s diary is one of those aforementioned sources, there’s a strong likelihood that the quotes come from there. I’m giving the book the benefit of the doubt in this matter, since faux dialog is the bane of the modern nonfiction picture book.

Read this book and few will wonder that after seeing Winnie in person, Christopher Robin wanted a bear of his very own. Indeed, the vast majority of children who are read “Winnie” may think to themselves (or say out loud) at some point, “When do I get my own?” Sorry, kids. If it’s any consolation you can see the Winnie-the-Pooh toys in the main New York Public Library location anytime the building is open. Maybe it won’t be the same as getting to ride a sweet bear in the zoo, but it’s still a part of this story on some level. Cute, not saccharine, and pleasing to boot, this is one story-behind-the-story kids will definitely appreciate. Lovers of Pooh welcome but not required.

For ages 4-7.

A wonderfully cute book
By Consci
This is a wonderful children's book. The amount of details and the pictures are just right for elementary aged kids, but even an older child (or adult) will likely be interested. Winnie-the-Pooh is familiar to nearly everyone, so it is nice to get the story of the real bear who inspired the story. It is a quick read, and the story is touching. There are pictures of the real bear and the real Christopher Robin and his father. It is a very nice to see the real faces behind the stories we all know and love.

It wasn't like she was going to be around for long anyway
By Sarah @ Words with Sarah
This book has been on my Most Anticipated of 2015 since I first read the synopsis so many months ago. I have been waiting forever for it to come out and when it did, I thoroughly devoured it.

Avery has never stayed in one place for too long. Her mother's job keeps them moving constantly, so Avery stopped trying to make friends and to fit in. It wasn't like she was going to be around for long anyway. It wasn't until she was in Lakehaven, Minnesota and she wasn't the only new kid that things started to look different.

When Jack Bishop shows up, everyone wants to get to know him. Everyone is intrigued by him, but no one was more curious about him than Avery. To her, he was more then just a new kid. But then she finds a picture of herself that Jack had. That's when the questions start happening. Why does he have a picture of her when she's in her house?

Avery soon learns that she is apart of a family that basically rules the world. No joke, these people have some major influence on basically everything. Her family is apart of an elite secret society made up of 12 different families. So Avery went from just having her mother to having a huge fam-bam-clan, which she was super stoked about. Until she starts gets attacked by another secret society called the Order.

It's then that Avery started to question just exactly what she got herself signed up for when she agreed to be whisked away to Paris to meet her family.

If there is something that I love, it's secret societies and quests. The Conspiracy of Us gave me just that. Not only is the setting in America, it's also in Paris and Istanbul. And let me tell you, the scenes in Istanbul will make your mouth start watering for a gyro. But I mean, who doesn't love gyros? I know they're my favorite thing to eat at my local Greek festival.

I think this was brilliant debut from Maggie Hall. It gives readers a little bit of everything, from mystery, to badassery, to romance. It was just such an entertaining read, I couldn't put it down. If I tried, it just wouldn't work. I had to find out what was going to happen with Avery and I wanted to learn more about her family and their secret society.

And now, I am staring impatiently at my calendar, waiting for the next book because let me tell you that ending will have you scrambling to get the next one (Thank you for that, Maggie!!).

Overall, this book was a promising start to a really fun series and will have you falling for Jack and Stellan. I know I did.

An Intense thrill ride that you can't stop reading until the very end!
By Tawney
It's not often you find a young adult book that has action, adventure, treasure hunting with a slash of romance. I love international thriller books like this. I usually read such books in the adult fiction sections, like James Rollins, Dan Brown or Andy Mcdermott. I love these type of books because they have intense plot twists and great characters. Their the-edge-of-your-seat reads you can't put down. That's exactly what The Conspiracy of Us did. This YA suspense/thriller had me at the first turn of the page.

Avery West has moved so many times it's not beneficial to make friends. Her Mom's job takes them all across the country. They have no family but each other. Avery tries to keep to herself not to mention she knows nothing about her father, who she wonders about all the time. Her Mom never talks about him. But when mysterious gorgeous british accent Jack Bishop and the hot Russian bad boy Stellan approach her at prom, things begin to get strange. She's immediately taken to Paris to discover a long lost family.

Apparently this long lost family is looking for her and this family is importantly powerful because they basically rule the world. They are known as the Circle of 12. This elite secret society has made world decisions, wars, and has some of the most powerful, influential leaders as members. The Circle believes that Avery is some key to unlocking an ancient prophecy. Some want her for the answers they seek while others want her dead. Among all of this her father might be alive. Stellan and Jack are Keepers of this society charged with making sure Avery stays safe. Avery is taken around the world on a quest to find answers all the while being persuade by the Order, a society who wants to make sure that the Circle is destroyed.

I loved this book. Secret societies? Quests? Count me in. It was an action action packed book that had mysteries at every turn of the page. We're taken around the world from Paris to Istanbul. I felt for Avery and the secrets that were kept from her. She demanded answers even when the bullets were flying. I loved how Avery kept her cool but also showed emotion when needed. She was a realistic character that one could relate to. Both Jack and Stellan had their quirks. Jack was the intelligent down to earth guy while Stellan was the hot take action guy. The sexual tension between the boys and Avery was priceless! But the book wasn't about the romance but more the thrill of the quest.

Maggie did a wonderful job with weaving the mysteries throughout the book and all the while kept us in the dark from the truths. Her descriptions were so vivid they took my breath away. I felt like I was in the Prada store in Paris with Avery looking at dresses or on the streets of Istanbul eating gyros. Her words flowed smoothly and I felt every emotion on this fast pace adventure. The rich culture that surrounds the setting from the glittering balls in Paris to the clubs in Istanbul was intriguing and it felt like I took every step with Avery.

This was a fantastic debut from Maggie. Readers will enjoy the twisting plot and adventurous action that they won't be able to put the book down! This was a thrill ride that at every turn of the page I sat at the edge of me seat waiting to see what happened next.

Should you read it? Yes! Action packed with adventure, romance and secret societies, every reader will find this book thrilling. This first book to a trilogy promises more adventure and action in the next two. I will definitely be reading the next books and anything else that Maggie writes.

A conspiracy I intend to avoid...
By j.p. levi, author
I really wanted to like this book. I read the review that compared it to The da Vinci Code, one of my favorite mystery novels, and began reading with excitement. This quickly faded into a yawn as the first fifty percent of the book is neither exciting nor comprehensible. Flat, dull characters, repetitive dialogue, and a convoluted plot mix together to make the only real adventure just staying awake until the end. Add that to a love affair that forms about fifteen minutes after the two main characters meet and chapters devoted to the non-kiss kiss. Ugh!! But my biggest complaint of all is that this isn't a complete story, much less a complete novel. The mystery won't be solved until at least book two, or maybe even book three. Book one is just the stepping stone to the rest of the series. Nancy Drew would never do this to us. Or Trixie Belden. Or even the Hardy Boys. I, for one, don't intend to get caught up in this conspiracy. Book one is the end of this tired, dusty road for me.
