From School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—Simon receives a hero's medal from some germs after he relentlessly passes his messy cold to his family, friends, and school acquaintances. When he learns the ways he's contracted and spread the malady, he begins proper hygiene and recovers, as do his victims, until another child with a runny nose enters the classroom. Readers who relish the gross humor at the beginning may balk at the didactic climax and resolution. The author's big-head Photoshop cartoons reveal his background in television animation. This style is also evident in the all-round hyperbole. Mucus gushes from noses, Simon vomits out of the school bus window, and a giant protozoa brags about his gift of diarrhea. Why the parents, teachers, or school nurse don't intervene remains a mystery. Educators may choose this title to reinforce health rules or prompt "ewwws" in the classroom.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA
Review
"Krall's chipper narrative detailing Simon's oblivious good cheer about being in school is in delightful contrast to the grotesque illustrations of his sloppy symptoms. In putrid colors and with an over-the-top attention to snot, Krall's illustrations depict every slimy, crusty detail, reminiscent in the best kind of way of a Ren & Stimpy cartoon. Simon learns a valuable lesson about hygiene, of course, but it's the yuck factor that will get kiddos giggling." -- Booklist
"Author and illustrator Dan Krall has fun suggesting the contagious aura that surrounds a sick person, and he's even better at depicting germs and bacteria. Protozoa looks like he'd be at home on an episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants," and effete Bacteria is wonderfully supercilious."-Denver Post
"the message is an important one, and with the level of gross in the illustrations, it is sure to get through to young audiences" (Kirkus Reviews 10/15/14)
"Will get kiddos giggling" (Booklist January 2015)

A running joke
By Dione Basseri
I know a fair number of teachers who could use this book...hell, I know a fair number of adults with inconsiderate coworkers that could use this! A brief but effective education on why you should practice good hygiene, and the consequences of exposing others to germs. Though...not the most...stomach-settling story, so maybe avoid this before snack time.
Krall seems to...lovingly illustrate snot. Like, it looks disgusting in every picture presented. The artwork in general is great, but man, that mucus...he has a future in that.
I'd definitely recommend this to be read a bit before cold and flu season. Not sure how good an idea it might be at parent-teacher night, but...it might be worth the risk of parental irritation. Better them than you! Overall, librarians would probably have the best luck with this book, since parents are going to be sticking around for story time no matter what, so it's a bit more of a coincidence than waiting for the one chance you have for parents to be present.
Consider this as a gift to teachers in your life.

School Nurse review
By denise
I am an elementary school nurse and received this book as a gift from one of our reading teachers. Not only do I love the illistrations and story but the kids love it too! It is the perfect compliment to the lesson I do with the children about germs, cough ettiquette and hand washing. The pictures are funny and really explain the story behind kids getting other kids sick. I have the kids K-2 draw pictures of how they feel when they are well and when they are sick and the illustrations from this book coincide with that assignment well. I also have the older kids draw a cartoon titled "Germ Wars" and, again, this book gives the students direction on how to procede with that assignment. I highly recommend to teachers, parents and school nurses!

and they love this book
By Elyssa
I teach 2-5 year olds, and they love this book. Not only that, but it really emphasized to them how important it is to wash your hands. Every time they wash their hands, they tell me the germs are "going down the drain!" They proudly exclaim that the germs are "all gone" when they are finished washing their hands.
I wasn't expecting this book to have the impact it did, but it was a wonderful surprise! It's always fun to find a text that resonates with them in a more profound way than I anticipated. I think this was the best purchase I made all year.
