Gr 3–5—At the center of Weeks's sweetly titled novel, is Melody, a 10-year-old girl whose mother died when she was born and who has spent her whole life with her father in Royal, IN. As the book opens, Melody notices that her father is distracted—burning food, whistling "You Are My Sunshine," and, most concerning, calling someone "Honey." A visit from Teeny Nelson, her six-year-old neighbor, confirms Melody's suspicion that her father has, in Teeny's words, "been bitten by the love bug." Along with her friend, Nick Woo, and a cast of winning supporting characters, Melody sets out to discover "Honey's" identity. At the same time, in passages that may be confusing to younger readers, a dog named Mo has a mystery of his own to solve. He dreams about a girl he knows he's supposed to be with, but first he has to find her. Much of the novel's action takes place in the Bee Hive, a local salon owned by a woman named Bee-Bee Churchill who can fill in the missing pieces of Melody's story—and is known for her homemade nail polish. Weeks has a good eye for the details of Melody's life—her anxiety about school, her love for her father and grandfather, and her need to learn more about her mother. A Sweet Tale

I listened to Sarah Week's book Pie shortly before Honey was released. I loved Pie so much (no pun intended) that I grabbed Honey from the library as soon as it came out. And I'm happy to report that this is another great read. Ten-year-old Melody never knew her mother who died when she was born. Her family has always been just her and her father. Then one evening she overhears her father call someone "Honey" on the phone. Does her father have a girlfriend? Why wouldn't he tell her? All the best gossip seems to be coming from the new beauty salon, The Bee Hive. Melody and her best friend Nick head to the Bee Hive hoping to find out the answer to the mystery, somewhat hampered by Melody's tag-along young neighbor Teeny. But this simple quest takes some unexpected turns and Melody finds what she's truly looking for.
This is an excellent read for families, a great audiobook for a car trip. While the book's main characters are children, the themes of the story will appeal to all ages.

Who is Honey?

Summary: Because Melody’s mother died when she was a baby, Melody’s never really missed her. She and her father are so close that the two of them seem like a complete family. But one night, the phone rings, and Melody hears her dad call the person on the other end “Honey”. He tells her it was a wrong number, but she’s sure he has a new girlfriend, and with the help of her best friend, Nick, sets off to figure out who it is. There are a couple teachers at his school, including her awful fifth grade teacher Miss Hogan, plus the new hair salon owner who it turns out was Melody’s mother’s best friend. The mystery is slowly solved and along the way, Melody learns more about her mother, her father, and herself.
Pros: Like Sarah Weeks’ Pie, this is an immensely satisfying book with likeable characters and a plot that unfolds at just the right pace to keep the reader guessing to the end.
Cons: Although plenty of third, fourth, and fifth graders would love this book, there’s no big “hook” to use in a book talk.

Something sweet like "Honey" will warm your heart when you read it!

Sarah Weeks is an amazing author and we recently had the chance to meet her when she came to visit our school. My brother, mother and I had just finished reading Honey and we would definitely recommend this book to people of ALL ages. It had everything in it: a little mystery, some humorous parts and there were also some touching moments as well when Melody was learning about the love that her mother had for her even before she was born. My brother and I also found the names of the nail polish (in the back of the book) simply hysterical. Who knew you could come up with such "cool" names for nail polish colors?
Without spoiling this book, we encourage you to RUN not walk out to your nearest book store (or library) and check it out. Sarah Weeks will grab your attention right away as she writes these smaller stories within the story and connects them all at the end!
By the way, if you enjoy this book, you will also LOVE her book PIE!
