Key is no ordinary imaginary friend. He's the only one he knows of who's actually come back from the sleep that all imaginary friends succumb to when their creators forget about them. Did the girl bring him back or did he wake up on his own? Does she need his help? Where is she? These are all questions that help him determine that he needs to find her.
There are a few problems though. For one, he can't remember his past. Images and moments come and go but they are all so fuzzy. The next problem is, that shorty after he wakes in the Wylds, (a world between worlds filled with everything everyone has ever imagined or dreamed about) the evil witch Baba Yaga becomes obsessed with capturing him and using the immense power he possesses for her own ends.
His travels between the Wylds and Clockwork (what those from the Wylds call our world) gain him a small group of friends, namely, Tersius; a man dressed in red and able to wield three swords at once, a Welshire Cat; cowardly and a bit insane, Ashen; the blood thirsty princess of a long collapsed empire, and Dugan; a bad man turned good.
While the Wylds are full of glamour and imagination, they are deadly to anyone who steps off the path, Clockwork is almost equally as dangerous. Their lack of color and imagination threaten to unravel the existence of anyone outside of its realm of reality. And there are men in black suits and fedoras constantly on the look out for people like Key and his friends. Men who believe it is their soul purpose to destroy anything that makes sense. They are called Clockworkers, and mercy is something they do not believe in.
While Key slowly learns bits from his past, seemingly at random he is thrust into communication with the girl that brought him into existence through dreams. While visiting her in one of these dreams he has a horrifying revelation. She is at a special school being trained to become one of these Clockworkers, and she doesn't want him to come to her aid. She likes her life the way it is.
But there is more lurking in the depths of his past that he cannot remember. Something that must be brought to light before either of them can continue on with their lives, and something that if not discovered, will bring them to madness. And there isn't much time.
With his friends, his abilities, and his magic set of chalk, Key sets out to infiltrate a Clockworker compound in order to kidnap the girl who made him live so that he in turn, can help her live.
But with Baba Yaga continually ensnaring him in her traps, and Clockworkers constantly interfering, will he be able to save her in time? Or will he pass into darkness and be lost?

A satisfying urban fantasy sure to spark and amuse your imagination
By Chad Bowers
In the vein of dark/urban fantasy, reminiscent of Brom, Gaiman, and even King; Clinton Bowers lead you into a fairy-tale landscape that is as dangerous as it is enchanting. The main character, Key, is an imaginary friend who should have been long forgotten. He is little more than a boy and innocent in a dangerous world. At first blush an 'imaginary friend' does not seem a very exciting protagonist, but he quickly reminds us of what it was like to be child; powerless but at the same time awed with the world around him. His adventure leads him on a path of self discovery that appears to be a metaphor, whether intentional or not, for our own paths of self-discovery. Taking risks to find ourselves and discovering what is meaningful to us no matter who tells us what we ought to be, or the circumstances we find ourselves in. For these reasons the reader quickly identifies with Key and becomes invested in seeing him succeed.
The setting alternates between two landscapes. The fairy world of "the Wylds" and our own modern-day USA. The Wylds is filled with pristine beauty, seems to be created from everything ever dreamed, and is empowered with primeval elements of creation. It is as dangerous as it is fabulous however, home to elfin sprites and Tolkien-esque ruins, but also terribly cruel witches and monsters that twist the psyche. The modern world we all know is typical hustle-bustle with multitudes of average Americans, but fae creatures also live alongside them in secret. The consensus reality seems to enforce an ignorance on the majority of regular folks, they are oblivious to faery haunts and unconsciously turn a blind eye to sickly-looking vampires. But this present, modern day stage poses faerykind's most lethal threat: Clockworkers. They are the Men in Black who are cold, calculating, and completely devoid of fancy. The Clockworker conspiracy meticulously works to enforce a systematic lackluster reality by eliminating "anomalies".
Although the storytelling is fun and evocative, the book is flawed with amateur editing that seems to get worse as the reader progresses. Being a self-published book, minor errors may be expected, and the flowing story makes them easily forgivable. This reviewer feels that Key is sure to open doors to the imagination of your childhood, when drawing pictures was magical and we were right to fear the dark.

Enough with the vampire and werewolf shiz... This is something original
By Sarah77777
“From Sleep” is an excellent and fun read that would normally be expected from big-time authors like Neil Gaiman or Christopher Paolini. The author’s imagination and the book’s setting seems to be pulled directly from the dreams and nightmares of humankind. Mr. Bowers has created his own universe that deserves its own fan base, and I’m sure that it will one day have one.
“From Sleep”’s story is one with which many of us can connect. It’s that of searching for our own identity and the struggle to reach out to people who we love and are attracted too—whether that is reaching out for romance or for friendships. And that story comes with a lot of fun and imaginative adventures, whether its exploring the Wylds, discovering hidden cities, finding treasures, meeting new fun and unique characters, or escaping child-eating witches and monotonous, boring, and logical Clockworkers who represent the dullness and banality of the world which we so often try to escape. And indeed, readers can escape that by experiencing this book.
In summary, it’s a great story that deserves to be more recognized. Enough with the vampire, werewolf, Twilight, run-offs and remakes. “From Sleep” is original. When I read it, I felt like a kid rediscovering Middle Earth or Narnia. I encourage everyone to read it and to experience it on their own, both kids and adults. You’ll get sucked into it, and you’ll start to love the characters like old friends.
