Well written, but not what I was expecting. Maybe more like a prequel?

I've read some of the first Gallagher Girls novels and had expected something like that, but this is a dark story about a girl suffering deep emotional trauma who is trying to cope without help from anyone. It's not a mystery or spy novel (though there is some eavesdropping, covert following of a suspect, and trying to find the truth). The main story is how this girl feels betrayed by adults who make her feel like a crazy person until she wonders if maybe she is. Even I wondered if she was.
She pushes away her friends and does very reckless things because she no longer cares if she lives. I really felt the adults were idiots in this story. They know she has a wrong idea in her head and is quite willing to cause an international incident over it, yet they let her wander around by herself doing whatever she wants. Then, despite being told how the slightest misstep could cause WWIII, one of the adults does something much worse and there doesn't seem to be any fall out from it. Ok, all the tension is gone from the series for me, now.
Based on how it ended, this felt like a prequel to a series. Grace is past the "I'm crazy" storyline, now, and she's just been shown something secret (but not yet explained) that I suspect will involve spying or similar activity. It's like a set-up for the rest of the series.Hopefully, some of the remaining "why" questions from this story will be uncovered since the "we don't know" aspect left me feeling dissatisfied. Her friends are a fun bunch of characters, so the series could be pretty fun...unless, of course, it continues to be a dark series.

Upset Teen Drama: SPOILER

Ally Carter's "All Fall Down," the first in a series of books that revolve around the adjunct children/young adults that live within the embassy row in the country of Adria, features Grace, a sixteen year old with a trouble unstable background as its first person narrator. Marketed as a thriller, Carter's novel is more about the turmoil within her main character and it is this departure from the usual suspense girl-spy/solver of mysteries that may or may not impress the reader. Those expecting a conspiracy that will eventually become an episodic series with a self-confident lead might be disappointed as the portrayal of Grace as a girl with many issues colors her voice and the rather dangerous activities in which she participates. Those enjoying the psychological profile of a traumatized young girl may not appreciate the spy central ending. In this regard, "All Fall Down" may not exactly fill the bill on either counts.
Grace's voice compels the reader to view the life of a diplomat's family from the standpoint of requirement and protocol but also from the frenzied off-kilter perspective of a young girl who has witnessed her mother's death and is certain that she was the victim of murder and not the accident that everyone else accepts. Carter gives Grace a voice that drips with sarcasm and uncertainty: no one trusts her stability and thereby she does not trust in it herself--not the most inspiring character for young adults. This may have played better as a 20-something with problems who explores the why and wherefore--then perhaps, the audience would not be perplexed and fatigued by the frenetic voice of the heroine--meaning as an adult novel, not geared for young adults. In the same respect, Grace indulges in some pretty unacceptable daredevil stunts that are both dangerous and reckless.
However, it is her downtrodden voice that offends the most. This reviewer, although intrigued by the storyline of the Scarred Man and the mystery surrounding her mother's death, got tired of the negativity and over emotive observations of the girl. And, yes, of course, she is experiencing problems, but the reader doesn't really know the extent of her issues until the very end.
At the climatic finale, suddenly Grace is catapulted from the pain of her discovery into the expected world of intrigue that the novel promises in its marketing. There is no denouement--the reader is merely lured into purchasing the next book of the series to discover just what the plan or conspiracy was in this first title. Suddenly, Grace is in the middle of an underground spy central with less than a page of explanation. Sorry, doesn't fly.
This novel may work as the back story to an already well-known series of stories that revolve around the intrigue of embassy life. But, it doesn't. Instead, it is the kick-off for the series . . . kick-off for what? I, for one, will not be finding out.
Bottom line? It's not that "All Fall Down" is poorly written; the first person narration of the main character gets under the reader's skin immediately and the mystery revolving around her mother's death will interest the reader to continue to turn the pages. However, this novel, instead of presenting the character of Grace, her friends and love interests that live on Embassy Row, this should have been offered as the back story to an already established character involved with the mystery and intrigue that occurs behind the scenes of diplomacy and protocol. I kept putting off reading it so i could do other things... like weed the garden and wash dishes.

One can sometimes lay bare the hidden recesses of their mind with simple strategies. For example, while i wasn't wild about the first half of this book, it certainly wasn't awful, at least not in any way i could identify. However, each time i tried to sit down to read the second half, pressing chores came up that absolutely had to be done first. Emptying the dishwasher, folding laundry, weeding the garden, tracking down all of the marbles that the toddler threw down the basement stairs... basically, any task i could conjure was preferable to actually finishing this book.
I'm not a fastidious housecleaner. Unless things are getting out of hand, i'm far more likely to spend 15 minutes of downtime sneaking a chapter or two of my latest novel than i am to suddenly remember that i'd been meaning to dust the mantle and should really get to it. So when i'd rather sort my Cat5 cables by color and length than finish a book, it's a sign to me to just give up.
