How far would you go to help a stranger?
When Sebastian the bear is discovered on Dogwood Island, no one is quite sure what to do with him. This quiet island off the coast of British Columbia is not a place for a bear - the most dangerous animal on the island is a seagull with an unusually large appetite. Will the circus, where Sebastian has worked almost all his life, come back and get him? Should he be sent to a zoo? What if this lonely bear cannot find a place to go?
Enter Sugar and Clive. Sugar, a medium sized dog with caramel coloured curls, and her best friend Clive the barn swallow, are not shy about saying yes to adventure. Determined to help Sebastian in any way they can, dog and bird recruit their friends to try to get Sebastian off the island to a wild place, where he belongs.

Interview with the Author
Q - What makes the Sugar & Clive series special?
I write the Sugar & Clive Animal Adventure Series because of my deep and abiding love of three things: animals, nature and adventure. When I was a young reader my favorite children’s stories were ones that involved these elements. I’ve always been crazy-in-love with dogs and dog books, so marrying my love of writing with a main character in my children’s books who is a dog was something I’d long wanted to do.
As a young reader, and now as an adult, I love reading books with characters who are kind, resilient, and who I would want to be friend with. Best friends Sugar (a medium sized dog with caramel coloured curls) and Clive (a barn swallow) are exactly that. When faced with a problem that needs solving, this adventurous pair works together with their other animal friends to find a solution.
Q - Why should middle-grade readers give these books a try?
Because the Sugar & Clive Animal Adventure books are fast-paced and filled with adventure. They will keep you guessing right up to the very end!
The Sugar & Clive books are set in a unique place on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada - an island filled with funny, weird and wonderful characters - where silliness and suspense go hand-in-hand. The shenanigans the animal characters get up to in the stories keeps readers laughing (and me too!).
Q - Should the books be read in a particular order?
The books don’t need to be read in any particular order. There are recurring characters, of course, but each book can stand alone and the threads of each story are tied up by the end of each book.
However, if you want to read them in the order they were written (as I often do with my favorite mystery series or adventure series), I would recommend this order:
Sugar & Clive and the Circus Bear
Sugar & Clive and the Bank Robbery
Sugar & Clive and the Movie Star (coming soon!)

Review
I loved this book, and cannot wait to read the next one of Alexandra's! The characters are brought to life and drew me into their lives right away. Alexander's writing is respectful of her audience, young or old, which most certainly assures that for both the reader and listener that boredom is a long forgotten word. It's delightful, and I recommend this to all of my friends and relatives with small children. Amazon reviewer

Enjoy this adventure story with a great cast of characters!
By Richard and Liz
Meet Sugar, a dog owned by Marion and Clive, a barn swallow that lives in the barn on their farm. It is June on Dogwood Island on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. There is a bear in a cage outside the library? Why?
Sebastian, a bear, belongs to the circus troupe The Tremendous Traveling Tanzinis or at least he used to. As details emerge it appears that Sebastian has been abandoned by the circus! Upon seeing Sugar, Sebastian is surprised that Sugar is not in a cage or on a leash. (Sugar is allowed to roam the island at leisure.)
The villagers vote to send Sebastian to the Calgary zoo. The more Sugar thinks on this, the more she wants Sebastian to have his freedom so wants to ferry him off the island to someplace wild. When Clive and her return to visit with Sebastian they discover he has gone along with his cage? Where is he? The two friends split up to search for him. Clive talks with Elmore the crow who is not friendly and Clive picks up the phrase "Dang it!" A black squirrel named Eddie keeps repeating the words "Noisy lake! Noisy Monsters!" What does this mean? Is it a clue?
Does Sebastian even want his freedom? He has been in captivity since being orphaned as a young cub. Can Larry, the seagull, secure a boat? The last three chapters are full of suspense and our children would not let me put the book down at this point until we had finished it which was fine by me, as I wanted to know how it ended also! The epilogue sums it all up and the gives the reader the final update.
The characters in this book all have different personalities and idiosyncrasies creating a very interesting story for children. However the book could use some additional editing. The biggest 'problem' is run on sentences where periods should have been used, not commas. An example is:
"I guess..... I just...." he struggled to find the words and then they burst out of him like a gust of November wind, "the last time I was free it was scary!" This should read "I guess.... I just..." He struggled to find the words and then they burst out of him like a gust of November wind. "The last time I was free it was scary!"
Another example"
But then Sebastian said something that helped her to understand, "The circus people became my family." In this situation there should be a period after the word 'understand'.
A big "oops" occurs when Larry is speaking:
"..... I had orchestrated....." Sugar and Clive raised their eyes at this exaggeration, ".....and that the new...." There should be a period at the end of exaggeration.
I decided to still give the book 4* as it really is a great story and some folks may not even notice the errors.

A BEAR'S BEST FRIEND
By Barbara Mojica
The format of this book is a bit unusual for a middle grade adventure. The author begins with a prologue setting the scene for the climax of the book. She ends with an epilogue that answers the questions left in the reader's minds.
Sugar is an energetic, caramel colored dog who lives a carefree life with her mistress Marion on Dogwood Island. Sugar has a somewhat unusual best friend, a barn swallow named Clive who lives on the farm with her. One day, while traipsing through the island, Clive urges Sugar to come to the library to see a strange site, a bear in a cage in the town square, who apparently has been abandoned on the island. The two friends strike up a conversation with the bear named Sebastian.
Soon it becomes apparent that the circus has closed up shop and Sebastian has been left in his cage to fend for himself. The townspeople decide it would be best to place the bear in a zoo, but Sugar and Clive feel that they would like to help Sebastian find his freedom At first the bear is reluctant, but after his brief separation from the circus, he decides they are right.
Clive and Sugar enlist island animal friends like Larry the Seagull, AnnMay, a Siamese cat, and a human friend, Stewart, to find a way to move the 500 pound bear off the island into a forested area where he could roam free. But the zookeepers are fast approaching, will they be able to carry out their daring plan?
I love the dialogue and clever conversations among the animals, and the ingenious solutions they come up to solve one problem after another. At just over one hundred pages this chapter book is just the right length to hold the interest of young readers and middle grade students with enough interesting plot twists and suspense. This book would be an excellent choice for a class read aloud and discussion book. Young animal and adventure lovers will not be able to put this one down.

is a great viewpoint, especially if you love animals
By Sharon Edelmeier
Alexandra spins a tale of animal adventure that is engaging, humorous, and absolutely delightful. Her animals play the starring role, and the story, seen through their own little animal personalities, is a great viewpoint, especially if you love animals. The descriptions set just enough detail to help the reader "see" what is going on, without holding back the suspense or the adventure. I am a fan of her writing and look forward to more in the series. Besides Sugar and Clive, Larry the seagull, in all of his grossness, is one of my favourite characters.
