From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Middle schooler Ava always seems to be nervous about something: her math quiz, an upcoming field trip to an adventure park, the possibility of her parents divorcing. When she uses an old blue pencil found in a junk drawer to write a question in the margin of her math quiz, a voice that only she can hear tells her the correct answer. It turns out that the pencil can answer factual questions of all kinds, from what people think and feel queries about schoolwork. Ava and her friend Sophie use the magical power of the pencil to try to help the elderly people in Ava's grandpa's old age home and in the process make discoveries about her grandpa's thoughts and wishes. So far so good, but when Ava discovers through the pencil that her mother has breast cancer and that her mother is about to postpone her mammogram so that she can accompany Ava on her adventure park trip, Ava finds herself having to call on all her inner resources to ensure that her mother goes for her test. In the process, she surprises herself at what she is able to do. When Ava realizes that the magic pencil is inhabited by a piece of her long-dead grandmother's spirit, she helps to make her grandfather's last moments happier. Ava is a sympathetic and well-rounded character, and the relationship, conflicts included, between her and the more outgoing Sophie rings true. The writing is smooth and the dialogue believable. VERDICT Firmly planted in realistic fiction with a single fantastical element, this story will appeal to Wendy Mass fans as well as those who love Messner's previous novels.—Sue Giffard, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York

“I really liked it,” says my 9-year-old son
By Jeddy 3
I asked my 9-year-old boy to read this book and then interviewed him about it, asking for his honest opinion, whether positive or negative. Those of you with boys this age will appreciate how difficult it is to eke this type of information out of them, but after some effort, I got a good picture of what he thought. Here is the gist of it:

The book was interesting at first, then got more boring, then as the end came closer you found out the fun stuff you’d been waiting for. He felt the middle of the book was boring and he wasn’t sure whether to bother reading on. (He did read on, at my insistence.)

Some parts of the book were serious and some were funny. There were scary bits. For example, someone found out that someone else had cancer and had a moral crisis over whether to reveal this info. However, there were funny parts too. (I heard him laughing at points, so I can confirm this.)

There were a number of plot twists that surprised him, which he enjoyed. He liked the main character, Ava Anderson, and he liked that she obviously loved her family and her best friend, Sophie. He didn't like the character of the dad. He said he thought that character was supposed to be funny but wasn't. Though he felt the ending was a little sad, he liked the message. I asked him to summarize the point of the book in one sentence, and he came up with this:

“Ava learns to face her fears and finds her strength to always keep trying.”

I've given the book 4 stars because my boy liked it overall, and he liked the overall message of the book. I'm deducting a star because he felt the middle of the book lagged.

Strange, overcrowded tale.
By J.Prather
All the Answers is an enjoyable novel with well formed characters and a unique premise that will find many fans in the 9-12 year old set. What kid out there would not want a magic pencil that knows all the answers to every test? Ava learns in this story that having all the answers is not always a good thing, nor is it the most important thing. I loved the author's idea here, and for the most part she executes it well, providing tons of food for thought and material for class discussion. It's when she started to bring in all the other issues that I felt the story lost some of it's focus.

Ava has serious problems with anxiety. It's almost painful to read this girl's worries. She is often paralyzed by them, both physically and emotionally. I felt very sorry for her and felt that the best parts of the novel were when she was able to overcome her anxieties. Unfortunately, she has lots to be anxious about. The author introduces grief, family illness, economic hardship, and peer pressure into a very full story. Plus a magic pencil that turns out to have a rather creepy origin. I wish this would have focused more on Ava's personal achievements and left some of these other issues out.

Still, the family portrayal is top notch. I love books that offer up loving, supportive parents that have a real role in their children's lives. It will be hard to recommend this strange little story, which is surprising as I am a true fan of this author. All the Answers failed to capture this adult reader.

“…The Blue Pencil Knew Things…” …
By delicateflower152
“All the Answers” addresses the dilemma of what someone might do if they had answers to almost every question. Kate Messner has written a novel focused on the preteen audience, but one that has a message for every reader.

When Ava Anderson discovers that a blue pencil she found in the family junk drawer answers every factual question she writes with it, she is both amazed and intrigued. Ava “what if’s” everything for potential problems and is often reluctant to engage in activities because of her resulting apprehension. She has used the pencil’s powers during tests, but hesitates to ask it questions about other matters. Her best friend Sophie has no similar reluctance to use the pencil and gets Ava to begin using the pencil to learn about things outside school. After a falling out with Sophie, Ava begins to realize that having the answers to everything, especially when the questions are personal, may not be a good thing. She begins to understand that the pencil’s answers may not be able to help those she loves and about whom she cares. She must overcome her fears and meet the challenges life has through determination and self-reliance rather than through “magic”.

Kate Messner has written a very enjoyable novel that provides life lessons to which the target audience can relate. “All the Answers” does not preach, but uses humor and the characters’ humanity to make its points. It highlights the importance of family and forgiveness, of faith and acceptance, and of putting the needs of others above personal desires.
