A Modern Fairy Tale
By Tilly Hovis
Wickford Welden is at it again! Utilizing his sense of the macabre, he has crafted a complicated tale utilizing some Victorian literary conceits such as 'our protagonist'. 'our heroine'. and 'reader be patient'. This story follows the fortunes of a 12 year old girl named Theresa who falls asleep one fine day at the shore beside a large sand castle. She is instantly transported (like Alice) to the lair of a band of scaly lizards headed by King Julian. The king sets her the three classic tasks of all good fairy tales in order to gain her freedom: she must slay a fierce lion, cross a mighty river and climb the tallest mountain. Before each task, Ian-the-cute-leprachaun appears and gives her the tools to complete the task.
Not content with the 3 (classic) tasks, Kind Julian is about to drag Theresa back onto his lair, when 'our heroine' is rescued by none other than the Arch Angel Gabriel, astride a mighty white stallion, accompanied by strains of the Hallelujah chorus and accompanied by multitudes of angels. A huge battle ensues, but, naturally, the forces of good triumph and force the lizards underground, from whence they may rise again! After giving Theresa an amulet, Gabriel vanishes, taking his angels with him.
Up pops our little leprechaun warning Theresa never to take off her amulet.
Scared to descend the mountain, Theresa is now rescued by Christobel, riding a snow white unicorn, come to save the day, who delivers the little girl home to her parents.
But Theressa's trails are not yet over! Forgetting that she cannot remove the amulet, Theresa takes if off her arm and instantly finds her skin crawling with 'beasties'. Mephisto enters the room of 'our petite heroine' and threatens to drag her down to his dark realm.
As she re-dons her amulet, she screams for Gabriel who once again comes to her aid. Another battle ensues, and Gabriel overwhelms the dark lord who slinks off, no doubt to try another day. Again the forces of good triumph over evil and Teresa is - finally - left to the ministrations of her doting parents.
As the author wrote in his introduction: "I was surprised by the fecundity of my imagination!' and "I am hopeful that this narrative, which is basically a monumental juxtaposition of the forces of darkness being pitted against the angelic powers, will be read, and enjoyed, by generations yet unborn."
