Interesting idea, poor execution.
By Stanny
Interesting idea, poor execution. It's funny, the authors bio says he loves cheap action flicks, and this short reminds me of a cheap action flick with sci-fi elements. It's got everything there to be a real solid read, but it misses the mark multiple times. It's palatable, and you'll read the whole thing, but it leaves you hungry for what could have been just like those cheap action flicks.

A Solid Popcorn Sci-Fi Novella
By Eric J. Ponvelle
I want to preface my review with the fact that I did not know this was a YA Sci-Fi novel until speaking with the author later. I mention this because I don't usually read YA books, and I rarely enjoy them, It's a matter of tastes really.
The first chapter does a really good job at setting the tone for the novella. We learn of a world that is fragmented and at war. We have characters who are clearly deep and ready to die for a cause, and we have a cause that is utterly horrifying.
The problem for me is that ends with Chapter 1 where that character dies. The protagonist of this novella is Kara (and later Orem), a member of the Resistance that is fighting the State, a tyrannical government that oppresses its citizens with drugs. It has obvious inspirations from Brave New World, and it does a great job setting that tone down for a younger audience.
My issues with the novella, and ultimately what made me give my rating, are stylistic ones. I once received feedback from a publisher that using thoughts of a character is a cheap version of telling the audience what you want them to know. It took me out of the story a few times where tension was building, only for a thought to butt in and tell me exactly the mood the author was trying to achieve. Again, this may be a product of the targeted audience.
On the same topic, perspectives jump quite a bit in chapters, and sometimes in the same paragraph. Without stating the specific instance for the sake of spoilers, two characters, both female, are together, and they swap perspectives frequently in their section.
Finally, I don't like the sales model. The author broke up "The State" novel into three smaller novellas, with the first one (eight chapters long) being free. The latter two are $3 each, while the combined collection if $3.99. I understand the mentality, and it seems to work as he has more reviews and buys on the combined collection than the separate ones. The issue is I looked at the synopsis of Book 2 and Book 3, and I am pretty sure a major plot point was spoiled for me. The best method, I think, would be to let the sampling tool on Amazon generate a 20% sample, and sell the book as its own thing.
In the end, I think for the target audience it is a really good story. There are mechanical issues, but even the highest published books have issues. It's a quick and easy read, and it has a lot of fun and life to it. Give it a shot.

The first one's free ... and good
By KC
I read through it quickly, and enjoyed it. The first chapter was just about brilliant, and did a great job of introducing many of the important aspects of the world without feeling stilted.
Pros: I thought the characters were well fashioned, and I felt like they had more depth than they had a right to in such a short novella. We also get a small glimpse into a rich world that clearly has more to offer, and start to meet some of the people who have made it the way it is.
Cons: I don't love the seven-chapters-plus-a-cliffhanger-for-free sales model. I was also left wondering more than once "If we have circumstances like these for a long time, why hasn't happened before?" There's probably an explanation for it in the next book.
