The Wonderful Adventures of Nils is a work of fiction by the Swedish author Selma Lagerlof. Originaly it was published in two books, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils in 1906 and Further Adventures of Nils in 1907.
These two are usually combined into a single book called The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, although that name could also describe the first book only.
The background for publication was a commission from the National Teachers Association in 1902 to write a geography reader for the public schools. "She devoted three years to Nature study and to familiarizing herself with animal and bird life. She has sought out hitherto unpublished folklore and legends of the different provinces. These she has ingeniously woven into her story."

Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf wurde am 20. November 1858 auf Gut Mårbacka in Värmland, Schweden geboren und starb am 16. März 1940 ebendort. Sie war eine der bekanntesten Schriftstellerinnen des Landes und gehört zu den schwedischen Autoren, deren Werke zur Weltliteratur zählen. 1909 erhielt sie als erste Frau den Nobelpreis für Literatur.

Swedish Classic

Hardly read anymore in the U.S.A. this classic tale of a boy turned tiny, who rides on a goose's back all over Sweden, was written by the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature. Selma Lagerlof was commissioned to write a Swedish geography reader for children. She wound up writing a novel beloved by generations. Wonderful adventures indeed, incorporating not only the geography of Sweden, but many traditional folk tales, glimpes of the natural world, and bits of culture and history. Will Nils ever become normal sized again? Can he help the wild geese elude the bloodthirsty fox? Keep a map of Sweden handy to follow Nils and the wild geese as they fly north for the summer, and you'll likely enjoy this story even more.

Great book. poor print quality

I read this book when I was a child and loved it. I bought this book for my 9 yo, but the quality of this particular issue is very poor. the text is blurry and uneven on each of the pages to the extend it almost hurt my eyes. i am returning the book

Wonderful way to share this story with my grandkids

In 1972, I bought this book to send home from Sweden for cousins. I hunted for one like it for my own kids, but could only find the very long original book. This picture book version is true to the original and has charming pictures and a good translation into English. It was in lovely shape and will enchant my grandkids for years to come.
