Journal 97 The Case Notes Of E.R.Satz: The Right Side, by Ben Kotyuk

The book starts with a brief introduction to the nineteenth century master detective, Edmund Robert Satz who compiled the information within Journal 97. At times, it is hard to determine whether his notes are fact, fiction, or the ramblings of a diluted mind. When his notes are told as a story, his odd philosophy causes the heartfelt, warm characters to swim in an ever-changing undercurrent of subtle humor. The story begins in Wallachia, the birthplace of the vampire legends in the year 1380. Vladoff is a young aristocrat whose family was the target of a brutal vampire attack. The only one to survive, he becomes their prisoner and travels south with the marauding band on a killing spree for almost a year. Yuri lives in the town of Lastari that does not hold any opportunities for such an industrious young man as himself. Along with being physically miserable, he feels mentally stuck and deeply repressed. Hating where he lives, Yuri decides to run away from the only place he has ever known, and heads north to go beyond the reach of a tyrant’s control. This unlikely pair are thrown together by their individual circumstances and over time carve out a new life for themselves. Through a series of unplanned events, they are taken on a journey which unveils their emotional depth and dedication to their unique friendship. Over time, Vladoff and Yuri are joined by a small group of people looking to change the life they are forced to endure. Working together in secret, their lives take on a pleasant rhythm and they each are able to find happiness. Just when everything seems perfect, the group is suddenly threatened and they must flee in order to survive. In the end, they find their rightful place in the world, and E.R.Satz’s discovery is revealed.

Review
Reviewed By Maria Beltran for Readers' Favorite - Five StarsJournal 97 The Case Notes Of E.R. Satz is a vampire story supposedly based on Journal 97 of Edmund Robert Satz, who in the late 1800s discovered information that threatens to change popular vampire legends. Absurdly humorous and bordering on the satirical, this is a very enjoyable read. Yuri and Vladoff are two endearing characters whose lives are accidentally intertwined in a series of life shattering events that are as entertaining as they are profound. In the style of Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Collins, Ben Kotyuk's tale of Vladoff and Yuri, a most unlikely pair, tells a story of greed, friendship and love, and gives us a lesson or two about the real meaning of life. I highly recommend this book to all kinds of readers!                                                                                                                                                           Reviewed By Kayti Nika Raet for Readers' Favorite - Four StarsSet in Wallachia, the birthplace of the vampire legends, in the year 1380, Journal 97: The Case Notes of E.R. Satz by Ben Kotyuk is a unique tale that provides an interesting take on the Dracula legend, one I doubt has been told before. Told with whimsical, slightly tongue-in-cheek flair, Journal 97 is a novel that's difficult to classify; it still manages to grab the reader's attention while at the same time providing enough mystery to keep them engaged throughout this short story. Journal 97: The Case Notes of E.R. Satz by Ben Kotyuk stands well on its own but the last few pages also hint at a sequel, which I'm sure will prove as unique and engaging as its predecessor.

Theoretical History! Genius idea!
By Andrea Ward
I got a free copy of this book from Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review.

The book reads like a myth or fairy tale. Third person point of view. Straight forward action. No hints of deeper motivations. The characters, Vladoff and Yuri, are likable and simple. There are hints dropped throughout the story of the ending, but somehow I still found it to be a surprise.

The narrator is E.R. Satz, a theoretical historian. And the book are notes from one of his journals. It is a clever frame story to present the heart of the story, how Vladoff and Yuri found a place to settle down.

There is much humor in the book. The town that runs on brussel sprouts, the smell they leave, and the knee water that plagues them. You laugh, but even as you laugh you are caring for the characters.

The only negative I have to mention was resolved by the end of the book. It seemed to be getting long and going nowhere in particular. When I got to the end and reread that it was a book of theoretical history, it all fell into place and I laughed at myself for not remembering that as I read.

It is not a deep novel, but it is humorous. It is an easy read and rather enjoyable. Not something I would normally gravitate toward, but I'm glad I did.

A Perfect Summer Read
By Andrew Carrano
It is refreshing to read a book that engages one in the characters and the story so completely that you cannot put it down. Written in a style that echoes the tales of life as we might imagine it in the 14th century you find yourself reflecting on the characters as people that we might know today. In its heart it is a story of friendships and honor presented in a mystery that unfolds through the notes of investigator E. R. Satz four centuries later. I read the book a second time and found myself assuming the role of E. R. going so far as to Google the names of characters for clues to their behavior. As the reader progresses through the chapters the subtle humor of the author becomes apparent and drives the reader back to re-read prior passages. What began as a simple tale evolved into a multi-century web of characters real and fictional though never as we have met them before. Mr. Kotyuk has constructed a delicate masterpiece that entertains and engages the reader so much so that I wait expectantly for news of his finding "The Case Notes of E.R. Satz: The Left Side" and bringing these characters back into our lives.

Excellent fun read! PLEASE write more!

This book was so much fun! It was refreshing and I didn't want to put it down. The first part had me a little confused, but your reading the journal notes from case 97 of E.R. Satz. This journal is the telling Vladoff.

Vladoff is a vampire, well, at least half vampire. He is quite an unusual fellow. His home borders the lands of the Demi King. This king is fixated on a certain crop, a crop you just have to read about to understand. It is quite humorous, and very well written. When Yuri meets Vladoff all kinds of amazing things start happening.

This book is written in a style that I haven't seen in a long time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It reminds me of older classic tales I loved in English classes in collage. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a really good, fun read. I'm so looking forward to the "left side" of this story and more great reading from Ben Kotyuk!

My copy came from Story Cartel in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.
