What do you do as a father and a King if your three heirs are indolent and ignorant, and, as a result, the very future of your kingdom is at stake?
You turn the three brats over to the intellectual powerhouse Pandit Vishnu Sharma!
The Panchatantra Retold is a collection of entertaining and enlightening folk-tales from Ancient India, originally narrated by Pandit Vishnu Sharma to the three Princes of Mahilaropya to infuse them with the much-needed worldly wisdom that traditional learning had failed to impart.
So the Panchatantra can actually be described as an Ancient self-help book on how to navigate successfully through the various vicissitudes of life. It is important to mention though that these stories are not didactic and moralistic in any sentimental, black and white way. The good do not always win here. This led the German scholar Dr. Johannes Hertel to describe the stories as 'Machiavellian' in tone. It is a possibility that Machiavelli himself was familiar with the stories from the Panchatantra and that they were something of an influence for his own work 'The Prince'.
The stories offer a vivid picture of life in Ancient India, and it is interesting to discover that, for all the progress made over the many centuries since the Panchatantra was written, the essential qualities of human psychology have not altered to that great an extent.
The stories are divided into five sections - Mitra Bheda (Loss of Friends), Mitra Samprapti (The Gaining of Friends), Kakolukiyam (The Fierce Enmity between the Crows and the Owls), Labdhapranasam (Loss of Gains), and Apariksitakarakam (Ill-considered Action).
This is the fifth section, Apariksitakarakam (Ill-considered Action). The main story is about how an impoverished merchant gains wealth by following the instructions of a monk he sees in his dream, and how a barber, who follows the merchant's example, without knowing why he did what he did, ends up losing everything. The rest of the stories explore the theme of ill-considered actions.
There are 14 stories in this volume.

Excellent book for children and adults
By Michael Gardner
The Panchatantra Retold: Part 5 is classed as a children’s book. As such, it’s a very enjoyable series of morality tales I think children will enjoy, but I’ll freely admit I enjoyed each story from an adult perspective. I think others will too as there’s some nice cheeky humour to appeal to parents entrusted with the job of reading to their children. It’s worthy to mention that Sonal Panse’s ink illustrations that appear at the start of each chapter are in themselves lovely works of art.
As a student and fan of World Mythology, I was delighted before the stories began with the foreword explaining it’s a necessary and traditional aspect of Indian mythology to retell stories. One tale is told, and then the narrative is picked up by another character to further illustrate the point being made. This mode of storytelling was the heart and soul of ancient oratory, the reason we have these stories today, because one orator preserved them by passing them on to another before they were eventually written down. IMHO, Sonal Panse has found a most fitting way to bring this tradition into the digital age, thereby passing these stories on to another generation.
I was given a free copy of The Panchatantra Retold: Part 5 – Apariksitakaram in exchange for an honest non-reciprocal review. Excellent book. My inner child wants to read the others now.

Captivating narration and illustration
By Sujatha
Like many Indians, I grew up hearing Panchatantra stories read by my mother, and now I read these stories to my five year old son.
I like the way the author gives sanskritized titles to the chapters like “Apariksitakarakam” which means ill-considered action. This story gives the message that a person must not rush into any action without understanding, planning or examining the consequences that may arise.
This also happens to be my son's favorite story. I like the way how these stories are interwoven. That's the beauty of Panchatantra.
The version of Panchatantra stories as retold by Sonal are easy to read on a Kindle and her style of writing and illustration are very appealing.

Classic tales expertly presented
By Blake Malone
Stories originally told over two thousand years ago and still around today have to be something special. This was my first read of any of the Panchatantra, and I was suitably impressed with the tales themselves – the simple moral messages and basic life guidance they convey. This volume leaves me with a thirst for more, and I will be checking out the other 4 books in this series… The presentation of these tales is wonderfully done here. I did a bit of research to see how others have retold them, and I didn’t find a better version. I’m giving top marks for the clarity and engaging simplicity of this author’s storytelling, and I wish there was a higher mark I could give for her artwork. I can only imagine how amazing the original pen and ink drawings would be. As illustrations in this eBook, they are fascinating.
