Perfect Introduction To Chapter Books and The Story Has a Fantastic Moral!

My 5 year old nieces really enjoyed this book although they can't read it independently yet. It's intended for children in Kindergarten - Second Grade and the age range is very accurate because children older than second grade might find this book too easy and babyish. This is a wonderful transition from picture books to chapter books without being so much text that it's overwhelming to the child and still including pictures on each page. The book is 72 pages and contains 11 chapters ranging from 4-11 pages each. There aren't too many words per page and it holds the child's attention.
I absolutely love that it's written in diary format and shows how important it is to reflect on the events of the day and what can be learned from them as well as identifying feelings about such events. My nieces loved the diary format so much that they have started their own diaries, so it also encourages readers to write themselves. The illustrations are colorful and cute and really help break up the text for an early chapter book reader. Because it has speech bubbles for the characters it's part text and part comic.
The story is about Eva, an owl who decides to plan a bloom festival for her class. She realizes that there is a lot to do and makes a list of what she needs to do. Though her best friend Lucy helps her and her "enemy" offers to help as well, Eva refuses to accept help from anyone and even redoes what Lucy was trying to help with. I didn't like that aspect of the character because she was initially a glory hog and a control freak. That's good for showcasing different personalities children may encounter among their peers though. However, as the festival gets closer, she realizes she can't do it all alone and asks her classmates and even her enemy for help. In the end, she realizes that teamwork to reach her goal (planning and making everything for the festival) was essential and rewarding. The story is relatable to children who as they get older, assert more independence like Eva, but often find themselves in need of help from peers or adults, so I like that it showed there's no shame in asking for help. Also included were some facts about owls, such as they are nocturnal and they can turn their heads all the way around. Lastly, I like that it showed life skills in addition to being a team player, like the importance of writing, organization, planning and making a to-do list, and learning to ask for help to avoid being overwhelmed.
This is a great book for beginning chapter book readers that incorporates great life lessons and an important moral. Highly recommended!

Invented words, for example "winglish"
This is not a good book for early readers, or children that are struggling to read, the story is cute, but the invented words will only confuse a child that is already having difficulty with reading.
I looked at the book from the viewpoint of a parent with a child with learning disabilities, but some of the same points will also apply to children that are just learning how to read, The targeted age for this book is set too low, as I believe many children in Kindergarten will not be ready for a book that is this complicated.
I think a good age group would be 8 to 9 year olds, as it it does mention "mean" girls, and that is a concept that is probably going to be slightly too mature for a Kindergartener.
Recommended for ages 8-9, and not for early or struggling readers

A little birdie told me…

That little birdie was my daughter, and she told me she really liked this. The pictures are charming, the story is easy to understand and follow and my daughter raced through this (it took her less than an hour to read) and it taught her little life lessons (obvious ones) that made this a fun and educational little read. Learning about the importance of asking for help and the fact that people can change and work together is a great thing to learn. My daughter, who is in the suggested age range for this book, is a little above this, though. It was a breeze for her and she wanted more, to be honest, but it was a fun read and she enjoyed it and is looking forward to continuing Eva’s adventures. I just wish that the book was a little meatier, a little more detailed, because a seven year old can handle more than this.
