A captivating adventure
By Nix Hansen
Set in the rugged lands of Waitomo, New Zealand, this treasure hunting adventure brings together myth, culture and a fantastic cast of loveable characters in a novel like no other.
As a teacher I am always on the look out for books that my students will enjoy listening to, are able to relate to, as well as use to further their learning. The Secret of Sinbad's Cave is a versatile novel that I used in my classroom for comprehension development and literacy examples as well as being able to link to other areas of study including Science, Art, ICT, Maori Language and Drama. With strong themes present throughout the text it is simple to base an entire unit of study around it.
Myself and my students quickly became captivated by Walker-Bain's words, and many times, read far more than we meant to as we weren't able to put it down. It is a truly magical book that allows you a glimpse into an often forgotten world of legend and heroes in our own backyard.
Highly recommended for all ages. Hoping there is a sequel in the works.

Traditional, Done Right - (With Caves!)
By Pop Bop
Some descriptions of this book invoke Enid Blyton's Famous Fives series and "Treasure Island", which is pretty daunting company. As it turns out, since we have a good cast of companions, excellent supporting characters, a romantic and exotic locale, serious treasure, and plenty of ripping fantastic adventure, I'm happy to go along with that comparison. (Sometimes I think that the middle grade and YA authors in New Zealand and Australia have become the keepers of the Blyton flame.)
As you might expect, the book is set in a very traditional framework. We need to find the treasure in order to save the family farm. Our spunky, clever, resourceful heroine is helped/aggravated by her older brother and younger sister. Two local boys and a Maori girl, Ariki, round out the gang. Maps and clues are found, and we head off to adventure, (shadowed, of course, by dangerous criminal treasure hunters). There is sneaking and skulking and loads of adventure.
But here's where we get some very appealing twists. We are in New Zealand. Maori characters and myths are treated with great respect throughout the tale, and legendary characters from old Maori stories inform the background action. Events are set around the Waitomo Caves, and especially the Glowworm Caves, which are real and totally cool, and offer the perfect cave setting for an adventure like this. (Look up Waitomo on the internet and get familiar with the area if you want to get the most out of this book.) There is an undercurrent of magic/fantasy which doesn't detract from the generally realistic and grounded action. The author has clearly made an effort to introduce as much New Zealand local color and culture as possible within the story framework, and does an excellent job of weaving that and the mythical and fantastic into an otherwise realistic tale.
The success of a book like this turns heavily on the appeal of the main characters. Our heroine, Natalie, is smart, tough, and energetic, but age appropriate. Her siblings pull their weight. The Maori girl Riki makes an excellent partner for Nat. The two neighbor boys add some variety and comic relief, (and a tiny hint of romance). This is just a fine gang with which to go adventuring. Adults act like adults, which is always nice. Villains are classic bad guys, but not scary. The magic feels natural and authentic, so you don't get a fairies-in-the-garden feel.
The upshot is that this fell squarely, for me, into the colorful and engaging boys' own/girls' own adventure category, and that is fine any day. The Waitomo angle and especially the Maori color elevate the tale and add a special bit of pizzazz. A very nice and satisfying find.
Please note that I found this book, at the author's suggestion, while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Dive in and find the excitement
By Bethanie
The Secret of Sinbad's Cave
by: Brydie Walker Bain
Genre: Middle School MYSTERY
At first I wondered how Ms. Bain knew so much about the caves in this book until I read where she lived and that told me all I needed to know. Need an adventure? Dive in and find the excitement. It begins with something even I, as a 44 year-old wife and mother of two (ages 12 and 14), would love to find one day.
What child or adult for that matter would not like to find a secret passage or hidden room in their own house? Things like this have always fascinated me. It adds to the adventure and mystery of the story. Take six adventurous young minds and set them loose with what is found, along with some amazing legends. The next thing you find is high adventure, mystery, and danger lurking around every turn. Throw in a few magical beings or incredibly "insightful" adults and the next thing you know . . .
Well I won't give that away. I'd hate to ruin the story for someone. It's kind of like a movie you really want to see and someone ruins the ending for you. So I will just say, read the book for yourself. It is a great middle-school mystery.
The comradery of the children in this book is what I find to be my favorite part. Although I like the story--there is no story without the characters. They are what makes this one so good. Nothing better than a group of friends with the same goal in mind and ready to do anything to get there. Thank you Ms. Bain for sharing your book with me and treating us all to the legends of Sinbad's Caves!
